Dillon Baxter Update
Just talked to Dillon Baxter, USC RB commit, and he said he's, "Really mad," about the Pete Carroll news.
Michigan was high on his list, and they almost got him to change his commitment at one point. If Pete Carroll does leave, there could be movement.
Just thought I would keep you updated.

This is great news, now hopefully Carroll will actually bail so we can land this guy.
January 8th, 2010 at 8:20 PM ^
...John Morton, Carroll's O Coordinator ... the same O Coordinator ESPN reports Carroll is courting for his staff in Seattle.
Just sayin'

AWESOME

Ever since the whole MSU skimask event, news has generally been good for Michigan. I look forward to getting a few unexpected players before signing day, and having a hell of a spring game!

Do.Work.Son.
Thanks for the update Tom.

Hey Dillon, BECOME A MICHIGAN MAN!
January 8th, 2010 at 7:16 PM ^
Although we already have 2 RBs in the class already, neither of them are game changers. Baxter is, and after losing Drake, Witty, Murphy, and maybe Grimes, his commitment would be a breathe of fresh air (if it happens).
January 8th, 2010 at 7:33 PM ^
let's limit the "fresh air" talk, please.
edit: damn, it was joke!

On all the Michigan Intranets is that Drake is not going to be a part of this class. Academic qualifying problems. Ship sailed. And sank.
January 8th, 2010 at 7:54 PM ^
...Are that he's not going to qualify academically
Possibly more than just rumblings, but I don't recall the source

When he decided to put off taking the ACT until forever.
January 8th, 2010 at 8:00 PM ^
Let's not discourage simple questions, occasionally we all have them. We can't all have Engineering degrees from UM, ya know?
January 8th, 2010 at 8:04 PM ^
He was asking an innocent question. Why negbang him for that?
Friggen lemmings.
January 9th, 2010 at 11:15 AM ^
Connection in DISD doesn't even see a scheduled time for Drake to take ACT.
January 8th, 2010 at 7:17 PM ^
i'm watching days worth of news unfolding in 30 minutes

Tom you are number one in our Mgohearts. Keep up the fantastic work.
January 8th, 2010 at 7:22 PM ^
Good news, hope Pete leaves.
January 10th, 2010 at 10:34 PM ^
from Shafter that the deal was actually going through.
January 8th, 2010 at 7:22 PM ^
I might have a grabber, this would be so f'n sweet!
TomVH you rule. Love all the great info!!!

But for those that do, the SC rivals page has this up:

I see a lot of concern and discomfort about the Grimes situation; it is unfortunate. We'll be okay; Cullen Christian will be great. A Baxter signing would be a great addition to the class.
I am already looking forward to the spring game
January 8th, 2010 at 7:28 PM ^
Come on, Pete. Do it... Do it, Pete... you know you want to. Someone has to avenge for your first NFL disaster. Why not now? Do it, Pete...
January 8th, 2010 at 7:31 PM ^
...He's been working overtime today!
January 8th, 2010 at 7:31 PM ^
TomVH for pres, lets hope this all fall's into place for us.
January 9th, 2010 at 11:17 AM ^
Would Tom's responsibilities as the president interfere with his updates and overall great additions to this blog? If so, I would have to vote against him.

in November after his visit with the line "I know this ship has sailed but"
...but apparently I was mistaken.
Check it and hope for the best.

He sure looks good in a winged helmet...... let's hope he keeps it that way.
Edit: he plays qb in high school? The thought of tate in the gun, baxter on one side, and DROB on the other, Just think of what RR could do with 3 ample passers on the field at once...ok im gonna go sit down for a while im getting way to ampd up....
January 8th, 2010 at 7:42 PM ^
Add in Terrance Robinson and Jeremy Gallon who are former QB's, and you have a 5 QB formation!
January 8th, 2010 at 9:06 PM ^
Is he ever gonna see the field or what? He went from "exciting recruit who had a good play on youtube" to injured to "M.I.A."
January 8th, 2010 at 11:41 PM ^
That's the problem - he had one great play, and everyone based their expectations off of that.
January 10th, 2010 at 12:33 AM ^
DREAM SHAKE
January 8th, 2010 at 9:40 PM ^
There is still hope.
January 8th, 2010 at 7:40 PM ^
At least he knows our helmets have wings
January 10th, 2010 at 10:42 PM ^
Wow, looks really good. He can throw better then "shoelace" so thats good, and he has amazing moves/agility. The only thing that worries me is when he get hit he tends to dive forward just waiting for someone to smuck him right in the kisser. Otherwise, could be a great pick up for the Big Blue
Hey Dillion, you look good in a winged helment!

And not just because you bring good news... but that doesn't hurt.
Also, fun fact about Baxter: he appears to own some kind of horse, and is able to get on said horse very quickly...
January 8th, 2010 at 11:32 PM ^
That video is pretty short but its one of the best ones I can remember seeing. That guy has crazy moves and speed.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:34 PM ^
He looks like a big back, but seems to move like a scatback.
I like it.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:38 PM ^
He's only about 5'11" and 180 lbs. He's basically listed as the same size as McGuffie was.
January 11th, 2010 at 7:12 PM ^
Anyone else notice the O-Lineman blocking downfield and running with him on the run 20 seconds into that clip? I'm impressed... and that Baxter guy's pretty good too...
January 8th, 2010 at 7:43 PM ^
dont they usually hang around to find out who the new coach is going to be? kindof get 're-recruited' etc. if usc makes a power replacement hire, do we expect a change here? how close was he to seriously not picking usc to begin with?
the early enrollee thing certainly adds a neat twist.
January 8th, 2010 at 8:07 PM ^
The problem with this for USC is that this is all very bad timing. If this would have happened a year ago (Carroll leaving) they would have had a built in successor in Sarkisian already there. Hire him and dont miss a beat... Howeva Sarkisian is off to Washington, USC doesnt have a known successor on staff, so more than likely they venture outside of the program. With that said, remember how long our coaching search went for? Sure USC is definately a huge job, but still at minimum you might be looking at a 2 week turn around on a hire. Couple that with who the new coach brings in in regards to assistants and you start to push up next to the national signing day. Not a good scenario for a team still in it with a number of high-profile recruits in that a lot of uncertainty cannot be good this late in the recruiting process and likewise who's around to recruit them? They stand to lose some recruits if Carroll leaves, and might lose some depending on how long this Carroll to Seattle thing drags out. Will Baxter shake lose and become available? Who knows but he does become available, that might fill our need for a top RB.
January 8th, 2010 at 10:23 PM ^
USC doesn't have a successor primed because of the likelihood of institutional issues. It's hard to believe that Sarkisian wouldn't have read the writing on the wall and moved quickly when the Washington situation arose.
Given your take on the hiring turn around the timing couldn't be more surprising, really. If Carroll wasn't running out on the school (and chasing the NFL lucre) then why not just announce before the bowl (and keep your recruiting situations/coaching recruitment open).
Anyway, Mike Garrett certainly has a lot of explaining to do.
January 8th, 2010 at 10:42 PM ^
Add in the very real perception that bad things are about to happen to the USC football team just like the basketball team and it has to make a kid think twice.
Signing day is close, so they're really gonna be on the spot with these decisions. Wrong one could cost them 2 years if they want to transfer.
January 8th, 2010 at 10:27 PM ^
"conordog;" I agree he could take a wait and see approach, but as others have eluded to NSD is right around the corner, so I don't think he'll sit back and wait on USC. IMO a power hire is unlikely at least in comparison to a RR caliber coach. Can’t you just imagine the negative recruiting tactics of those not named Michigan in regards to stating the cause of PC's departure being the sanctions coming down the pipe from the NCAA? All in all the negative tactics of others are just going to push him more and more in our direction I feel.

Hey Tom, any news on a Blake Sims visit after his decomit from Bama?
January 8th, 2010 at 8:26 PM ^
Yes, same question here. Definitely would like to know more!
