Michigan Ranked 18th

Submitted by michiganman001 on

Michigan 18th in the latest AP Polll.

NW is 13th, OSU still 1st, MSU now 4th, and Utah is somehow lower at 5th

I think this is about right for Michigan. I would like to have seen Utah jump Sparty, but the poll looks pretty good overall. Can't wait for the Northwestern game, Go Blue!

Toledo has been at least getting votes for weeks now and finally has cracked the Top 25, and it makes me wonder when they made it to the final poll for either the AP or Coaches poll. It had to be during the Amstutz years about 15 years ago, if I remember correctly. Just another example how college football is funny sometimes.

The AP refuses to rank more than one MAC team, even 15 years ago when it was the "biggest little conference in football." Past 5 - 6 years, Toledo has been excellent, but they already had NIU ranked. Unfortunately, Toledo is coming from too far back and even an undefeated season only gets them to 15 or so.

You can't cry SEC, they've won two solid games and just beat the team many thought was the best in the country by a TON.

They should be in that 11, 12, 13 range...you have to get them up over all the 1-loss teams.

We would be OUTRAGED if we were undefeated, beat MSU or OSU and there were still 1-loss teams ahead of us.

They've got DeBorded a few times...but they're better than UNLV and Maryland and Oregon St. - let's be honest with ourselves.

UK isn't terrible either.

At least we're talking bowl teams. Those are solid wins, IMO. We win @ Minnesota and I consider that a solid win. Not great, not elite, not program changing...but that's a good win.

Tennessee and even UK fit in that category for me. That's all I'm saying. Ole Miss, that would be like us being MSU or maybe even OSU. That's more than a solid win (despite me saying "two solid wins"), even if it's at home.

Did you notice the score of the UK game yesterday?  I'm guessing not or you would not have posted that.  They needed overtime to beat Eastern Kentucky at home.  They are not a solid team and that was not a solid win.  They also almost lost to ULL.

Mr. Yost

October 4th, 2015 at 2:53 PM ^

Okay...not solid. Average. That's not the point. The point is that they're a bowl type team - they're not ASS.

Go look at Minnesota, IU, Northwestern in most years when they make bowls at 6-6, 7-5, they have awful wins over shit teams too.

That's who I'm comparing UK against. The same level of comp OSU and MSU are just sliding by week in and week out. A lower bowl team. Which isn't ASS.

Maybe average is a better choice of words. The point was, it's a lot better than a directional Michigan.

Minnesota beat Kent St. 10-7...yet people give TCU credit for beating a solid Minnesota team.

That's why those teams are great or elite...because they can't consistently bring it week in and week out. But if you go back and look at most of them, you're going to find a bad loss and a couple bad wins.

The media treats bottom tear SEC teams better than bottom tear Big10 or say Pac12 teams.  Kentucky is not a good football team.   If they get to a bowl game its because their non conference schedule is a joke.  Vandy looks like they are Rutgers kind of awful this year.  South Carolina is terrible as well, but because of who the coach is a win over them matters more than say a win over Indiana or NC St, and it shouldn't.

I think OSU and MSU should be knocked down as well.

Mr. Yost

October 4th, 2015 at 4:56 PM ^

People keep calling TCU's win over Minnesota...a B1G team a solid win.

Minnesota beat Kent St. 10-7. That's awful.

Minnesota is 3-2 and Kentucky is 4-1 with a bunch of close wins and a close loss to UF.

Yes the media slurps the SEC...but people in B1G country often whine about stuff they that simply isn't true/realistic just cause it's easy to play the victim.

People are hailing the Minnesota win for TCU like the Horned Frogs went on the road to Blacksburg and be one of those vintage 10-2 Virginia Tech teams.

If Minnesota is an okay/solid win for TCU, Kentucky can be an okay/solid when for UF.

Seriously.  Florida is undefeated and just trounced the #3 team in the country.  I'm surprised they aren't higher, to be honest.  I wish people could try to be a little objective before they scream SEC bias (especially since most of the AP voters are not from SEC country and therefore would have no reason to give them bias).

DrewForBlue

October 4th, 2015 at 3:34 PM ^

And who thought Ole Miss was the best team in the country?

College football is crazy (crazy fun!) and rankings are imperfect. But some other commenters, and myself, get frustrated that the logic always seems to be used to help the SEC and never hurt the conference in the rankings.

I am as big a Vandy fan as you can be, and was actually at the Ole Miss/Vandy game.  And if they were even slightly competent Ole Miss would have lost at home.  Alas!

Sadly because of the poll system, games are as big as they are that particular weekend.  Sparty beating by Oregon by 3 points is (in reality) an overrated team barely squeaking by a crappy December bowl team, but perception-wise it was a barn burner featuring two top-ten teams. Likewise, Michigan vs Utah was (based on perception) was two unranked teams in a decent ball game with no real implications, but reality is that both teams are likely finishing the year in top 15.

Mr. Yost

October 4th, 2015 at 2:27 PM ^

I think that was the perception (and reality) when they played.

However, I think part of the reason Utah is so high is BECAUSE of Michigan. If we sucked...I doubt they're getting that respect.

If we beat NW and MSU. I think we'll instantly SHOOT up because people will say "there only loss is to Utah who's ranked #3!" and we'll have a "good loss" - whereas if Utah was "meh" we'd be in the low teens.

The more Utah and Michigan keep winning, the more they're helping each other. Right now we're propping them up, but if we can win two more games before the bye...I'm willing to bet we jump right up there with a "great" 1 loss.

Dawkins

Also, MSU hasnt dominated in any games this year and their toughest opponent so far is unranked Oregon. Not sure how they're even top 20 if we're just looking at this year's body of work. At least if we beat them in 13 days we will cash in on their inflated ranking.

WolvinLA2

October 4th, 2015 at 2:15 PM ^

In response to both of you:  most teams haven't had too many high profile games yet, so some of the rankings are based on last year's results, and rightfully so.  OSU won the national championship by a mile, so they should get some benefit of the doubt until they actually lose a game.

Similar for MSU - no reason they shouldn't be ranked high until a team actually knocks them off.  They still play us and OSU so that issue will work itself out in a few weeks.

Mr. Yost

October 4th, 2015 at 2:21 PM ^

Which is fine...

And I don't think it's necessarily about "benefit of the doubt" as much as it's about someone rising up and snatching it from them.

Oregon and Auburn suck...so MSU and LSU's wins don't look as hot.

TCU struggled with Texas Tech and should've probably lost that game. Then they go out some SMOKE Texas and look, they TAKE that spot from MSU who continues to sleepwalk.

If TCU went out and beat Oklahoma and OSU keeps playing like they're playing, I wouldn't be surprised to see them jump OSU.

Utah has that opportunity, MSU does...there are a lot of teams right now that if they start playing better - they can easily move up in the rankings.

But you can't drop OSU for playing like shit when everyone else is too. You have to try and be somewhat consistent.

UMForLife

October 4th, 2015 at 2:24 PM ^

Your logic works in pros and not in college. Players leave and you don't get the same team. Unless you are lucky, you are not going to field similar teams every year. This was the reason why playoff was formed. I understand the first week, but after 5 weeks, MSU is not #4 team. They might beat us but they are still not #4.

Danwillhor

October 4th, 2015 at 3:07 PM ^

and said so yesterday. They may beat us but osu/msu are NOT 1/4. I don't know who is but at this point we know they aren't. Yet, because nobody has taken it from them they're kinda just sitting there. Awesome year to be a good but not great team. Ranked high in the meaningless preseason polls? Great! Keep barely beating literally anyone and you're in.

A  September loss doesn't take away a big ten championship game win, a bowl playoff game and the chamionship game wins, all comfertably.  They are the only D1 football team to ever win a real championship and still haven't loss.  Unless they lose they stay where they are and  in my opinion they have earned that.

ghost

October 4th, 2015 at 3:05 PM ^

How did that work for FSU last year?  When you barely make the playoff you did not easily win a championship.  You act liket they were the 85 Bears or something.

And stop with the frist team to win a real championship.  That is just dumb.  FSU was a real champion the year before.  No one else had any claim to a title.

MGoCombs

October 4th, 2015 at 2:50 PM ^

I agree on OSU, but don't totally agree on MSU.

OSU returned most of their team after winning the title last year, so they get the benefit of the doubt. I don't really have any reason to believe that MSU earned that benefit anymore than anyone else up there. They lost a great coach and key players. Sure, they've earned the benefit of thinking they are a very good team, but I don't think anyone outside of OSU has earned "#x until beaten status."

Mr. Yost

October 4th, 2015 at 2:13 PM ^

I thought the same thing, and I had Ole Miss over them had they won.

But no one below OSU is doing ANYTHING to state their claim. Everyone is winning close games or playing no one. Or (LSU) destroying teams that we overrated (Auburn) and don't look so good anymore.

Utah is the only team with a real resume.

OSU isn't playing like a #1, but unfortunately...no one else is taking it, everyone looks vulnerable right now.

Utah doesn't really even have a real résumé. They've hammered a very average at best Oregon team and beat an unknown quantity in Michigan. The strength of Michigan's ranking is based on losing to a team that probably is better than we thought, but really don't know because their best win is to a team that's definitely worse than we thought.
