10/4/15 College Football Rankings Thread (AP #18, Coaches #21)

Submitted by MGoClimb on

After last weeks demolition of BYU, there was a thread for every individual ranking that was published. I thought it may be cleaner for the MGoBoard if they could be consolidated into a single thread, especially since threads such as the Coaches Poll ranking typically only generate one thought (omg these rankings suck).

Here are the rankings available for Michigan:

ESPN FPI: #20 (#17 power rankings)

Sagarin: #7

Massey: #20 (#21 power rankings)

Massey Composite: #14 (will likely change as more rankings become available)

AP Poll: #18

Coaches Poll: #21

There are countless polls available, so if there is one you'd like to point out just leave a note and I'll add it.

May work. May not. Worth a shot.

Pretty amazing how much better we are playing this year.  At some point however M needs to consistenly complete downfield passes.

I disagreed with you at first, but then I thought about it, we would be unstoppable. Our run game is solid, and our intermediate passing game is ok. If we hit on deep passes we most likely beat Utah. Teams can no longer walk their safety's down to the line because of the threat of a big play. Then we can run into 6 man fronts and get 5 yards a carry. If this team had even a slightly above average offense we would be dominant.

If we had a playmaking QB it would change the whole way defenses play us.  The OL and running game is and will continue to face stacked boxes all year because defenses will pick their poison and you go with the assumption that rudock will miss longer passes.  Even if you are wrong and he hits a few the odds of anything more than a few hitting are low.  So you concentrate on the run.

A Henne/Navarre type in this offense with this type of defense even without big playmakers at either rb or wr would make for a potent team in a year that the top 10 teams all have holes.  I can't even imagine how fun it would be to have a Elliott type at running back - sigh.

p.s. I like the idea of this thread so we dont have 8 poll threads every week.   I dont think UM moves up much this week because a whole host of teams in the 5-10 range lost and will drop to 15-20 with 1 loss - which is about where UM would move "up to".  Other teams like Iowa and Florida will also now be in the same place we are in the polls in late teens to 20ish.

LSU will jump to 5ish by beating powerhouse EMU, and Utah will jump 3 just by being on a bye as ND, UCLA, GA all got whacked.   Ole miss will probably also drop to mid teens now.

But beat #10/#11 NW and #2 MSU back to back and you are talking UM around #7 in 2 weeks even with 1 loss.  We'd have two top 10 scalps under our belt and a "quality road loss" to another potential top 10ish team.

Florida will and probably should jump us in the polls, they are still undefeated and that counts for something. I think this is the week msu drops to 3 or 4 but they will still be top 5 when they ce to Ann Arbor because Rutgers isn't gonna beat them. Next week is when we will really see what this team can do this year. First actually good defense since Utah. Play well against that defense and 2 or 3 losses is the new bar. The offense looks like it did against Utah and 9 wins seems to be about the ceiling again.

Our line has everyone a little upset lately but we are running into fronts that we are out manned. Puts it on the RB to make a man miss, which Green and Isaac can't do or run them over which is why Smith is so valuable. Hit a few over the top and back a guy out of the box, sky is the limit.

The fact that we have not done it yet (over the top, and downfield in general) I believe bodes well for us.  IF we get by NW, that next game will look like the Utah defense, or worse, as far as stacking the box, press, and DARING us to go over the top.

You would think it is going to happen eventually, like the Peppers return for a TD.

NW scares the hell out of me though.  BIG GAME

Best way to find a student ticket? Have a friend coming to town for Northwestern and wants to sit in student section. He is willing to pay for validation. Back when I was student I was able to easily find student tix on facebook but don't have many connections anymore. Help?

I thought I had heard a couple of years ago you need student I.D. to sit in the student section. Students could sell tickets, but only to other students... Hopefully in just crazy and Brandon didn't make this so, I sat in the section back in the early 90's even though I wasn't a student, and had a blast every time

O'korn will hopefully change that narrative. Next year's team will have to replace some good Linebackers...but aside from that...Yikes. Michigan is a likely top 5 team next year. The problem is the schedule.

Dominant defenses do well on the road.  See yesterday.

The schedule is not that bad next yr.  Our non conf is Hawaii, Colo (terrible team), and UCF.  Thats a lot easier than Utah and BYU.

MSU loses like 15 fifth year seniors incl all their "stars" - Cook, Calhoun, Jack Allen, and Conklin (not a 5th yr sr but projected 1st rounder).  Burbridge who is the only receiver doing anything this year is gone - as is rJ williamson, etc.  It will be the first time since 2011 UM will have a more experienced team than MSU.  Breaking in a new QB and a lot of new OL and DL guys.  Outside of LB / rb I think UM will be better than MSU at every position group save maybe receivers and punters in 2016.

OSU will still be good.

We will have the most experienced OL and DL in the Big 10 if not the country - a benefit MSU currently has which is helping them survive and advance even as they look uninspiring.  Glasgow on OL and Mario on DL are only 2 guys we lose who really play a ton.  Mone comes back etc.

Wisconsin replaces Utah as the tough non conf game.  Wait what's that?  Oh Wisconsin is in the Big 10.  But you get the idea - we get home Wisconsin vs road Utah.  I'll take that esp since Wisconsin loves to run not pass which matches our D.

Iowa and Ill are crossovers which is fine.

We'll have one of the best DLs and DBs in the country as well - problem is the LBs could be a massive problem.  If Bolden is better than Gedeon (and he is per the coaches or else Gedeon would be starting) that dims my Gedeon view a bit and after Gedeon we have all question marks.  Get me a frehman phenom like Jaylon Smith at LB or 2 grad transfers who can at least be "Big 10 average" and we're talking top 3 D next yr.   Which doesnt care about road games.

I think we are a top 20 team with issues but then I think the rest of the top 20 all have issues.

Lots of parity this year, no dominate teams, anyone can be beat.

OSU and MSU are looking less dominate every week, but PSU, NW and Indiana look somewhat dangerous now.

So 5 of the last 7 are going to be competitive.

Our offense has to have a complete game and not just one good half to win some of these games.

Unlike Maryland, if we give up some picks and fumbles to these other teams they will score.

Are you serious?

PSU barely beat Army, 1-4 Army. PSU's offense continues to be a dumpster fire. If Indiana could have held Elliot on 4th downs they probably win yesterday. Never mind the fact that they were playing with 2nd string qb and rb the entire 2nd half.

Purdue dominated the 2nd half yesterday. Nothing about MSU is dominant.

Michigan, Northwestern, Iowa are the best teams in the B10 right now.

They won't score because Michigan has the best defense in college football with the best coaching staff. I get that people are gun shy from the last few years but it's time to embrace the dominance of the defense. It's not a fluke. They are really this good and there is only one team on the schedule that has the athletes to score with any regularity and that's OSU. Time to get cocky and recognize how shitty these teams are and how the defense is going to punch them in the mouth.
