Michigan-Maryland Kickoff Moved To Noon Comment Count

Saturday's game at Maryland has officially been moved to a noon kickoff because of concerns over Hurricane Joaquin. U-M press release:

ANN ARBOR, Mich. –  The University of Michigan's football game at the University of Maryland on Saturday (Oct. 3) has been moved to a noon EDT kickoff from its previously scheduled 8 p.m. start, the Big Ten Conference announced.

The Big Ten has been in counsel with Maryland and Michigan throughout the week on the course of Hurricane Joaquin and its possible effects on Saturday's game. The three entities agreed that moving the game time was the appropriate decision.

"The weather experts are still dealing with uncertain probabilities for the course of Hurricane Joaquin," said Jim Hackett, interim Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics. "Thus we remain vigilant on developments and will err on the side of safety for all participants and fans."

Michigan (3-1), ranked 22nd in the latest Associated Press top-25 poll, and Maryland (2-2) will open their Big Ten schedules at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium in College Park, Maryland. The game will be aired live on BTN and BTN2Go. Please check local listings for complete broadcast information.

Minnesota-Northwestern is also being broadcast at noon on BTN, so check out this page to see what channel the game will be on in your area. Locally, at least, Michigan-Maryland will be on the main BTN channel instead of the overflow.

I think that is true nationwide.  Even in Chicago and Minn.

That poor Minn-NW dude.  He's been buying this chick drinks at the bar all night.  It's closing time.  Nobody is around.  He's finally going to get some.

And then we just sweep in from the band because our gig has been moved and take that girl away.  Just like that.

Unfortunately, those of us in South Dakota have to live with the BTN overflow channel which is not in HD. Watched the UNLV game on overflow, and it felt like I was watching tapes from the mid 80's. Can't complain too much though - at least its on! 

And NODODY has it better than us!! (hey, that would make a great stadium chant - anybody thought about starting that up?)

Has anybody been able to find what SiriusXM station will carry it, if at all?

The original listing was 195, but there is another game they are broadcasting at that noon time slot.

This is why 13 year old kids still ride around in the car in booster seats. Safety is great and all, but the storm is not projected to hit until Monday or Tuesday, if at all. Lame

think Maryland probably had a strong hand in this. Hadn't been a great week in college park. I don't know how excited they were to host the primetime game of the week after these two teams performances last week. They may be taking cover-literally and figuratively.

The hurricane is not the only weather issue.  Areas around DC are expected to get upwards of 20" of rain.  20" of snow are bad enough I could not imagine 20" of rain.  Expect flash flooding and a lot of travel issues.  Doing anything after dark would carry great risks to people leaving the game as the heavy rain starts.

My wife insisted that my son, who is very tall and heavy, ride in a car seat for years.  Even though he was clearly big enough to not need one.

I finally convinced her that he does not need it when I pointed out that he was larger than his teacher.  Does she ride in a car seat??  No.  Then he doesn't need one.

I am not looking forward to the day I have to force that issue.  My wife is a definite momma-bear and is completely irrational about safety related stuff.  Add that to the fact my son is a total nervous Nellie and it's going to be a fight with both of them to get him out of the booster seat.  

At least I know when the day comes for my daughter to graduate from boosters, I'll have an ally in that little daredevil.

It just kills me how the bar keeps getting moved for when kids can graduate from certain safety things, you have to put kids in backwards facing car seats until one year old, then it switched to you have to do that until they're two and so on and so forth.  At some point is does get pretty ridiculous.

My wife, in DC on a biz trip, got tix with her friends. Now she can't attend.

I am home alone with our two toddlers. Was looking forward to watching the game while they're in bed. Now I can forget it.

Plus, I don't understand how the time change makes anyone safer. There's no reason to believe the weather will be any better at noon than 8pm. Makes no sense.

My circumstances are less dire -- I planned a watch party which I think I can still reschedule -- but I think the main concerns were fan and team travel following the game (either Sunday or Monday) and potentially needing to divert resources from the game to other areas of the city in preparation.

Still not a huge fan of the move.  Track of the hurricane is still rather uncertain, though a more offshore path is increasingly likely and impacts would be felt Sunday evening at the earliest.

There's a high likelihood that when this decision is looked at with hindsight it will have been unnecessary.  However, saying the track is still uncertain is not a reason against making the decision.  In fact, it is the opposite.  With the still reasonable risk that the storm could take a left turn rather than stay out to sea, the decision makes sense.  I'm sure resources would be better spent from 8:00 pm Saturday on dealing with preparation rather than managing a football game, if indeed the storm takes that path.  

And the decision really couldn't wait, I think they waited as long as they could before everyone involved simply had to know the time of kickoff.
