Saturday Game-Day Weather

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

As many of you know, my daughter (named MGoKid by some on the board) is a SSgt and Meteorologist for the USAF, stationed at Warner Robbins AFB, near Atlanta.  She has responsibilty for the eastern half of the US.  She is a huge Michigan Fan and gets to the Big House every couple of years with Pops.  Her Commanding Officer (A Georgia Bulldog Grad) knows that I am a Michigan Grad Student and Season Ticket holder so he does not mind her giving me Official USAF Forecasts on game days.

So she is providing hourly forecasts to the USAF on Tropical Depression 11.  TD 11 is currently several hundred miles off the coast of Florida but the storm track will turn due North tomorrow.

She tells me that the center of circulation will remain off the coast of Maryland/Delaware and the rain will begin in DC sometime Wednesday and carry through the weekend.  The center of circulation will be well past the DC area this weekend but rain will remain.

Her game-time forecast is for very low clouds, IFR conditions with rain.  NNE winds at 20 MPH. Temperature 57F and 65% chance of rain lasting the entire game.  The area will get a few inches of rain starting Wednesday so the field will likely be sloppy.  There will be a high pressure system inland that should keep the heavy weather out to sea.  So if you are planning a trip to the DC area, take your rain gear.

She cautioned me that forecasts are less reliable more than 36 hours out.  She will update me daily and I will relay any information as I get it from her.

UMCP runs a fairly large shuttle bus network that'll get you from the Metro to the stadium.

Walking shouldn't be too bad, though it is about a 2 mile walk and I believe it's somewhat up hill.

Word of warning: metro on weekends can be...unreliable. I'm not sure which lines are getting completely screwed this weekend, but in general expect 20+ minute waits for trains which really adds up if you have to make transfers. Get an app for checking wait times and it may be worth it to walk a little further to a green line stop (if possible) vs. relying on a transfer.

I already liked you and now like you a lot more, tell your daughter thanks for her service.

It's a good thing our style of football doesn't get affected by weather, another reason to love Harbaugh!!!

There's a pretty good Cuban place (Cuban Island Cafe) just down Hwy 247 from the base. There's also The Magic Mushroom. One word of advice: don't EVER stay at the Comfort Inn on 247. It is literally the most vile lodging I have ever experienced.

I expect utter domination as we finally figured out how to showcase MANBALL, on the road and at night! Can't wait to just run it down Maryland's throat. The tailgate will be less than ideal but the win on the road in driving rain will be fantastic.

Well, I think it's safe to say it's going to rain alot in College Park.  Most of the week clear into next week.  Like 5-8 inches of rain was one forecast I saw.   Whether or not it will be raining during the game and how hard is anyone guess right now.

What kind of playing surface do that have at Maryland?
