Weekend Visit Reactions

While the big-name 2016 visitors from last weekend haven't yet gone on the record with reactions, 247's Steve Lorenz—who'll be a guest this afternoon on MGoRadio—has compiled some insider notes on how things went.

The general feeling with five-star CA OLB Caleb Kelly is Michigan's visit went well but might not be enough to overcome Oklahoma's lead ($). Unless Kelly surprisingly declares Michigan his leader this week, that's to be expected—he still has four more official visits to go, including one to Norman. Michigan may in fact have a better chance of landing the weekend's other official visitor, three-star FL DT and USC commit Keyshon Camp, who reportedly spent a lot of time with his former high school teammate, freshman DE Reuben Jones.

The Wolverines are also hanging around for four-star Detroit King WR Donnie Corley, who made a somewhat surprising unofficial visit for the UNLV game. Here's what Steve is hearing about where his recruitment currently stands ($):

In sharing messages with [M commit David] Reese, Corley's interest in the Wolverines appears to be more legitimate than has been led on publicly.

At the same time, we talked to one source who said Michigan remains in the thick of the race for Corley's services, but that one unofficial visit doesn't likely upset the status quo, which is with Michigan State and Ohio State currently appearing to be in better shape for his services, if he was to decide today. However, the good news is that it would be a major surprise if Corley did not take an official visit to Ann Arbor at some point during the season, with the Michigan State game on October 17th being a solid possibility.

Not much has changed here: Michigan is in the mix much more than they were before but are still likely a little behind their rivals—the longer this plays out, the better it bodes for M's chances. One factor that could play into their favor: M is showing interest in three-star King ATH Armani Posey, who visited with Corley and doesn't yet hold an offer from anyone despite being one of the best players on one of the best teams in the state. Lorenz says Posey and Corley are close; if M makes a push for Posey, it could help them land the state's top senior wideout.

Michigan also hosted four-star 2017 TE Jimmy Jaggers, who told Lorenz after the visit that the coaching staff made a big impression on him ($):

"Everyone is all football all of the time and it really shows and rubs off on you," he said. "I got to talk to Jay, Jack and Jim Harbaugh for a solid 30 minutes yesterday and then today I talked to Jay again and we were with him after the game too. Their staff is phenomenal as a whole. It really stood out a lot to me."

Jaggers is showing high interest and he's one of M's top targets to join Carter Dunaway at tight end in the '17 class.

Commit Updates: Vicious Vic Plays Defense

Heh.

Victor Viramontes is also putting up solid numbers at quarterback, though he was limited last weekend by a Mission Viejo defense designed to stop him.

The Wolverine's Brandon Brown has the rest of the commit stat roundup ($). Some notables:

  • QB Brandon Peters went a mere 11/15 for 198 yards a three touchdowns in a 34-0 Avon victory. He's got 19 touchdowns against two interceptions—each the fault of his receiver, I can say from seeing both—so far this season.
  • RB Kingston Davis had over 200 total yards and a 58-yard rushing TD in a Prattville loss.
  • ATH Kiante Enis rushed 20 times for 196 yards and a TD, caught two passes for 80 yards and another TD, tallied three tackles and a pick, and returned a kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown. He is somewhat better than his competition.

WR Ahmir Mitchell also had a nice week, scoring twice—highlights can be found here.

M Maintains Lead For Top-50 2017 OL

2017 FL OT Tedarrell Slaton, the #33 overall prospect on the 247 Composite, told 247's Ryan Bartow that Michigan still holds the lead for him ($):

"The coaching staff. That's what keeps them on top," Slaton said of Michigan. "I want the chance to play in that stadium one day."

He said hopes to visit Michigan next spring or summer.

Landing him, in my expert opinion, would be pretty nice.

Would M take Corley and Pie Young, whoever commits first, or would they wait for Corley first before accepting Pie Young? M needs playmakers but...

I'm not sure, but I've been watching Posey for a couple years, and I do not see him as a high-level prospect. There may be other things preventing him from offers, but while I think he's deserving of looks from smaller programs, a scholarship offer from a program like Michigan would be surprising.

This kid is going to be 20 years old as a college freshman.  Yikes.  No wonder some of these men are better than the aveage 17-year-old high school senior.

That's why it seems Beilein seemed to be emphasizing guys like Caris who are young for their class. On the other hand in football you're trading what might be a lower ceiling for a body that can more likely handle the punishment and will more predictably develop.

Did I miss a joke somewhere, or do you really think that highly of yourself to claim you are an expert just because you regurgitate information that others have posted from the internet (yes, that includes your "scouting")?  I guess that's the beauty of the internet: anyone with a keyboard can be a self-proclaimed "expert" on any topic.

I think he was implying it as a joke.  I do not expect him to put a "/s" everytime he makes a joke.

He has been doing this for a long time here and yes there is a lot of regurgitated info but it is good and concise.  Something that I appreaciate.

Lets not be a jerk about it.  Lets just appreciate that we don't have to go to 10 different places and follow 100 different people on Twitter to get all of our information.

I was at the game with my brother on an unofficial visit sitting behind Antjauan Simmons, Donnie Corley was sitting behind me and Caleb Kelly was two rows back.  I can tell you that Caleb Kelly was very disinterested from the 2nd qtr on laying back on the bleacher looking bored like he didn't want to be there, so I would be shocked if he came to Michigan.  Now with Corley, he was a surprise visitor as they had to hand write his pass on his lanyard and he was definately watching the game.  I talked to his parents quite a bit and they were very in to the game and genuinely seemed to be Michigan fans as they would get up and cheer.  I talked to Donnie's mom quite a bit and she kept talking about Michigan being on the right track with Harbaugh and his recruiting.  Antjuan Simmons was a great kid that I asked if he would come to Michigan if they offered and he smiled and said he would for sure, so we'll see.  I think we have a great chance with Corley especially with the interest his parents showed.

I just wrote a bit on this, but Simmons is one of the best all-around football players in the state for 2017. I don't know what position he'll play because he's a little slow for a RB, a little small for a LB, etc., but he's a heck of a player. For some reason, I just picture him playing for Minnesota and racking up 90 tackles a year as a strong safety.

How are the two safeties doing? And what about Weaver?

We rarely hear anything about those guys...we're going to need some help at safety sooner rather than later.

To be fair, this game was pretty boring. We didn't see a whole lot of the offense, and the defense (probably what Kelly was watching) was steadily dominant until the end when our team acted as bored as Kelly seemed.
That said, acting bored is no way to behave in (what is basically) a job interview... even if you are a shoe in.
