Rudock Hate

Submitted by KRK on

I'm and old MGoBlogger.  I'm still an advocate for Haloscan.  I loved the WLA and posted a few things there.  I think RR was a great hire that just didn't pan out.  When I graduated from college this blog switched to Drupal and it was harder to post, the community changed and I found myself with a job that kept me too busy to post.  This blog is great, the community is too.  There's posters that aren't amazing and have horrible opinions but it's so much better than when I was here and we just handle-jacked each other all day.  It's been a rough 8 year for those of us who are still around and I remember watching UM football as a person old enough to think "this isn't what I watched as a kid".  I'm 30 years old now.  And I watch Rudock and think "this is so nice....he doesn't lose every game".  I read Bacon's book and everyone of Devin Gardner's stat lines included two picks.  I loved Devin and think he was such a great player who just was in the right place at the wrong time.  But Rudock is so much less talented and so much more solid than he is.

Please stop saying "if he could throw a deep ball we'd be a top 10 team".

Please stop saying "if we had a real QB we could be Ohio State"

Please stop forgetting that most people thought 8-4 was a good season this year.

This team has performed exactly as expected.  Rudock may have more picks than expected but those are mainly from the first game and that was just a better team.  He and this team will be good, not great.  I'm excited too but let's not act like this team are defending national champs returning 22 starters.  They are basically what everyone expected.  2-1 with a winnable game against a good BYU team.  They've improved and have a chance to be competitve against everyone they play.

Hate Rudock if you want but don't act like it's been better around here the past 7 years.

i would've said 8-4 is disappointing based purely on the schedule and not the talent we have, but byu minnesota northwestern may all be much better than expected. Even state i expected to be down after losing their DC Maryland and penn state are the only teams looking way worse than expected But still yeah, losing 4 of 7 games to above average opponents would be disappointing in the carr years

The decision-making from the QB position is not the issue, but the accuracy is. We simply cannot be missing 3rd and short screen passes that badly, among other throws that any solid team should be completing.

Remember when the decision making was the issue? It resulted in throwing the ball away while being sacked in the end zone into the arms of a ND defensive lineman. Yeah, I'll take accuracy issues over decision making issues all day.

Do you remember the rest of that game when Devin wrecked the Irish? I'm all for not dumping on Rudock. The guy is walking into a new system that is supposedly difficult to pick up and is doing it while everyone else learns it too. Two of his picks are definitely on a receiver. But he also seems to be unable to hit an open receiver past 10 yards downfield, and he struggles to even do that at times. It doesn't matter if the interceptions come because the QB made a bad decision or because he was inaccurate. The bottom line is we once again are among the countries leaders in interceptions and QB is probably the weakest part of this offense.

I think Rudock is going to be alright and I think starting Morris would be an awful idea. But your reasoning of he wins games and hasn't made terrible mistakes are poor arguments. Gardner looked like a world beater his first 5 games when he had a modicum of protection. Tate and Denard both started seasons 5-1 or so. Let's let Rudock play more than 3 out of conference games before we declare him the best QB since Henne.

Before you start inserting curse words in our Quarterback's name. I feel the same for people who add D's as a statement of his ineptitude. Gerg vs Greg was fine. But this isn't a Social Security-aged man with a beaver. He's a student-athlete. Show him some support. This blog is awesome. Brian and Ace and their writing are awesome. But some of the fans around here are starting to suck.

Holding Rudock responsible for his mistakes isn't "hate;" it's accountability.  That being said, if he gets them close enough to keep defenses honest, I'll be happy for this year.  Besides, if there was someone better, he would be playing.

The decision-making has also been any issue; it's responsible for at least two of the interceptions. Rudock seems very indecisive even when he's IN the pocket and his primary receiver is covered, and completely falls apart when he's free. I can see him keeping his eyes downfield, but I haven't seen many QBs worse at actually completing a pass after breaking contain. With many QBs this is a strength, as huge opportunities can present themselves. Not with Rudock.

Wouldn't we though? I mean at least record-wise? If Rudock was better against Utah, we win that game (Not buying that two of those picks weren't his fault, especially with what we've seen since. One at most).

And is Ohio State even that good? They were in a battle with VT until VT's quarterback got hurt, they dicked around against Hawaii for three quarters and they beat Northern Illinois 20-13.

WLA = Wolverine Liberation Army. You can search for things from them and their users here a long time ago. The blog was much smaller, the community was different, Brian was more involved in threads, it was . . . interesting. There are some mgobloggers who were banished, who just vanished, who still have an account but have become lurkers who rarely post. It is too meta of a thing to explain, especially in the heart of the season.

Serious answer: it was a blog that presented itself as being a Communist vanguard movement that used a great deal of comedic exaggeration to get across points like "be patient with RichRod" and "don't talk shit about the players"... the writers and various hangers on (myself included) of the blog formed a mini-community within MGo that was actively disinterested in both the anti-RR rabble and the Tater-esque conspiracy theories, we would also take exaggerated, jokey stances against dumb things like discussion of MAIZE UNIFORMZ and calling MSU fans "Spartinas". For all the mostly negative folk memories about them/us, the WLA was mostly an overwhelmingly positive, optimistic group whose conflicts here were the result of saying "hey, just watch the games and hope we win and don't bitch constantly if we don't". That was the root cause of the conflict with Brian, too.

Agree with everything you posted. It's so early in the season to be overconfident at all. We beat 2 teams that are likely both going to finish with losing records and we are about where we thought we were going to be at 2-1. Really looking forward to how we match up with BYU. They  are looking impressive for the third week in a row.

I have read a lot of posts lately and I don't think anyone has said the above things. What people are saying is that Rudock has been billed as an accurate passer who is not going to bomb you to death, but won't lose you a game either. So far this year, he has not been very accurate and he has cost us a game and will do so again if the turnover numbers keep up. I think people will be fine with the lack of accuracy if he is not throwing at least one interception a game. I don't think there is anything wrong with saying these things. They are facts...

I completely agree with this, but a bunch of people in the open thread were absolutely hating on Rudock saying he sucked, yada yada yada. He hasn't been good, but I still think he will improve as the season progresses. This afternoon did make me feel a little more uneasy, but I believe there is still time for him to figure it out. We've only played 3 games and our D looks like it will keep us in most games this season.
