Does anyone know what is going on with Sam Webb and WTKA?

Submitted by pullin4blue on
This may not be the proper forum, but I figured that since Brian is frequently on WTKA he may have some inside information. I, like many others, are avid listeners to Sam Webb on WTKA. Sam has been absent from the show since the Holiday season started and I miss his take on things. In addition, I haven't heard the recruiting roundup lately.
I called the station this morning and asked if Sam was still working at WTKA and the response I got was "I think he may be". I was put on hold and transferred to Ira Weintraub's voice mailbox. I'm just curious since if I had a question about Sam, I would expect that I would be transferred to Sam's box. I understand that Ira is the program director and I may be blowing everything out of proportion, but the show is just not the same without Sam.
I have listened daily to various co-hosts and Ira, but it just isn't the same. I also have thought it strange that I have never heard any mention about Sam's absence. In the past, they would say that Sam is on vacation and will be returning next week, etc. The lack of information provided by the station makes me suspicious. If there is anyone out there that knows that Sam has moved to another station I would also like to know that.

Any info would be appreciated. Sam turned me into a recruiting junkie and although I know that I can always turn to mgoblog to get my fix, I need need to be able to listen to it while driving to work.

Sam's in San Antonio for the US Army All-American Bowl. There are fill-in morning hosts this week.

Also, this is not diary-worthy.

Sorry Ira, but that show is not worth listening to without Sam Webb. I thought he did call in to the show a couple of times, maybe I'm misremembering.

The recruiting roundup was on today and yesterday at a different time. Sam is in San Antonia for a high school all-star game. I think he was at the Under Armour Bowl last week.

My understanding is that he is on hand to follow the recruiting in high school players, and has been reporting on that being 8 and 9 am.

Assume and hope he will be back on the air with Ira after the all star games are finished.

I have heard nothing to indicate he won't be back in the saddle in his regular morning slot. I would agree, though, that if he left WTKA it would be a gigantic hole to fill. Nobody covers recruiting as authoritatively and accurately as Webb does, IMHO.

I think it's been weeks since podcasts were working. Since WTKA gets such weak reception in my area (South Oakland County), I really liked being able to catch recruiting roundups online.

I'm not able to get those new updates to work (nor was I able to get the last couple (12.18) to work either). I emailed the station a while back and was told they are having difficulties with a new hosting company (or something of that nature). Hopefully, they get it working properly again soon.

the station made the gigantic error of contracting with a web serving company down in Ohio, and they've had nothing but trouble since making that decision. What a surprise. The WTKA station manager is a Spartoon, so I assume he's happy that the podcasts aren't working.

I would never say for sure in the world of radio, things change so fast that he may be on the outs for one reason or another. Radio sucks.

But, and I'm sorry if this is off-base, I was getting the impression from him that he had some family issues to take care of that was causing him to take the odd day off BEFORE the holidays. And I swear I could remember him referring once or twice to his wife (or someone else?) being in the hospital. So he may have some personal issues that are keeping him away, and maybe even casting into doubt whether he'll be able to come back full time.

I of course hope everyone is ok and it's just his full time job keeping him away. I wish him and his the best. But just from listening, that's the impression I have gotten.

I live out of the country so the podcasts are very much missed. Brian: as you are a regular on the show perhaps you could pass on our communal longing to have the podcasts revived STAT.
FWIW: Brian's segments are golden (not blowing smoke chief - just the facts) and Ira is a big improvement over Andy as he adds to the show and has good chemistry with Sam.
