Semi OT - serious question that WD is afraid to ask...

Submitted by MGJS SuperKick Party on
i know this will get negged to shit, and I am only posting this to make a point to our favorite obsessed fan... WD has a great opportunity to work in the press box going forward this season, and potentially in the future. Tomorrow is his first test run. Ok here comes the fun part -- Me, LongLiveB0, and LSAClassof2000 have all attempted to talk him out of wearing a jersey to the press box and dress more conservative (Think Jay Harbaugh) as opposed to jersey, sweatbands and Harbaugh Khakis. What do you guys think? I am fully anticipating this getting deleted shortly, but it's to prove a point to our idiot buddy. I am sure he will post here to defend his thought process soon enough...

It's the equivalent to wearing jeans and a sweatshirt to a black tie affair. If he wants a bunch of snide comments, dirty looks, and to nuke and sense of credibility as a potential future member of the press...then go for it.

Press box is for working. Stands are for fans and people that wear jerseys. Grow up Peter Pan.

Okay,

my press pass is only for pregame and I have to go down to my seat in the stands with all the other fans as usual when the ball is kicked off.

This is just a one-time test run for this year. This is the only game I'll be doing this at this year as the guy I'm working with isn't ready just yet to hang it up. He films all the games from atop the pressbox and you can see him filming Brandstatter and Dierdorff on Inside Michigan Football.

But I'm going to be up there before the game starts. Not during it. I don't see how wearing a jersey is a bad thing when I'm not even doing the full game. I know this guy, I've been to his house and knows I'm........different.

This doesn't look that bad- (I don't wear sweatbands anymore. This was taken in 2011)

This is exactly what I would have said. If this is an interview or a realistic job preview as the HR types are calling it now, underdressing is inexcusable. If it is a job you want the job, how would you feel if you didn't get it because of your wardrobe selection.

No one ever failed to get hired because they made a professional first impression.

This right here is the BEST advice. You want to wear your jersey? Fine. Do it outside of the press box. Bring your stuff to change into after you're done. The press box is a whole different animal. People in the press box will be NOT be dressed like a super fan You will stick out like a sore thumb and probably be judged based upon your attire. If you want the gig you dress for the gig. You want to be remembered for your merit not how you looked. If you dress like a fool in their eyes you'll be remembered as one.

This. WD. Think about it. If you are in the press, you will get access to all kinds of stuff. You can still be a fan, but insider access is the best. Don't blow it dude. You are more cunning than Brandon. Hats off to you. Slimeball. Kidding.

I've actually done this a few times... and I can confirm that its a truly horrendous look. Whatever point such a costume might serve is not worth it.  Pick one or the other and commit.

If I wanted to rep the team, but still look professional  --> Navy blazer + light blue shirt + M hat + Maize and blue necktie = WIN

Hopefully you remember my completely non-judgemental clothing comments in the past and this will carry some weight as a result. This isn't the place for you to be a fan, this sounds like a business opportunity that you'd like to pursue. Generally speaking you should try to look like everyone else at first, whether you're at McKinsey and that means a $5k suit or a tech internship where people are in dad jeans. Shoot this guy an email asking what he wears and copy him, seriously.

Best advice all thread, imo.

For the record, I'm a management consultant. I visit clients all the time. I *always* call ahead and check on the dress code. What I've learned is that dressing more conservatively might stick out, but generally in a positive way. Dressing down too much stands out in a negative way.

Hey WD, I am just putting my 2 cents here. Dress for the job you want. You can be a fan, have great inside access AND be taken seriously, like a grown up, by wearing clothing appropriate for the opportunity. Put the jersey in the bag so you have it when you're done with your audition. Kick some ass. Have fun and Go Blue!
