Small Braylon Update

Greetings all, Just wanted to pass this note along regarding Braylon. 1. Stan Edwards (Braylon's Dad) called into WDFN (small local Detroit sports radio station) today in the morning, and stated clearly and unequivocally that his son was not taking a shot at Richrod when he mentioned UM during the Jets game yesterday. He stated that along with many former players Braylon still works out at UM in the offseason and is pleased with Richrod in general. [Now whether this is actually true, or a proud UM alum covering for mouthy son is not clear.] 2. It appears that Stan is also going to call into WTKA as well tomorrow morning...this was specifically mentioned by the host when Brian was on the station this afternoon. So we may get even more clarification at that time. Just thought I would put that out there. No matter what Braylon's intention actually was, he had to have some idea this was going to at least stir things up...oh well, may the next story be something positive, we need it! Aug '95

Stan Edwards was a real good Wolverine and a class act. However I wonder how many times he's had to explain something Braylon said or did. I do admire and appreciate the scholarship donations Braylon has made.

...that no matter what Braylon might have thought, or intended, the Freep story was headlined, "Braylon Edwards takes a shot at Rich Rodriguez." And Googling that phrase generates about 800 hits. And that USA Today, the Dallas Morning News and the Orlando Sentinel all picked up on the story as evidence of an ongoing dispute between Rich Rodriguez and Braylon Edwards following the kerfuffle over uniform number 1. The whole freaking country knew exactly what they wanted to do with Braylon's quote, and the ensuing story. I hope that neither Stan nor Braylon try to blame this on the press. It would be like igniting a couch in East Lansing and then saying that it was all a misunderstanding when the whole porch burns down. I'll spit up if I hear the Edwardses say, "Oh, that rotten newspaper; it's not what Braylon meant... In fact, it was just Braylon honoring the seventeenth anniversary of when Braylon first met Coach Carr as a nine-year-old at Cottage Inn Pizza..." NOBODY on this message board has been more critical of the Free Press than I have. But this was all entirely self-inflicted damage on the part of Braylon. We can't blame this one on the hateful Free Press, and I won't. It's time for Braylon to just say that he's sorry and time for him to admit that it was a dumb thing to say. No other qualifications. No misunderstandings, no miscommunication. Just. Braylon's. Stupidity. The damage will be done, to Braylon, who will look stupid, to his dad and to Lloyd Carr, who will feel some embarassment from having to be involved at all, even if just by name, or having to work on the clean-up; and, most of all, it will be yet another grossly unfair embarassment for Rich Rodriguez. That is why I hope that Braylon's apology is an extraordinary one.

I'm not sure why Braylon has any need to apologize. It's not like he locked a kid in a shed for three hours. He tried to be a smart ass, thought he was funny and it turned out a little awkward. Do people need to apologize for a bad joke? With all due respect to Stan, I definitely believe that Braylon was taking a shot at RR. He might have been doing it over the # 1 jersey issue (let it go already) or maybe he was just reminding the country that he played for Michigan back in better days. It was a bit unfortunate, but I don't really think that it requires an apology.

Honestly, I didn't read the rest of your post, because that line alone gives you no credibility. Please don't quote the freep and use that as a reason to take a shot at Braylon (I mean, he has donated > $1 million, and has worked his ass off for the team, but hey, the freep has a negative headline...) Also, let the man shout out his coach. What's the big deal. There are a lot more things to worry about.

I believe it was made with Section One in mind, but was released to the rest of the planet as well. It reads: "Last night during my pre-taped introduction, as a way of paying tribute to Coach Carr, I indentified myself as being from 'Lloyd Carr's University of Michigan,'" Edwards said. "I had no intention of showing any disrespect to Coach Rich Rodriguez. "I love the University of Michigan and will always be loyal to its coaching staff past, present and future." that I wrote, but I suspect that that's far from being the case. I'd much prefer it happened as a result of something his father said to him, which ought to mean a lot more to Braylon. And, for the good of our program going forward, all that matters is that he sucked it up and cleared it up, although it beggars the imagnation why he said it in the first place. I chalk it up to, "Braylon sometimes says stupid shit," which doesn't make him a criminal, and doesn't detract from his often-awesome playing ability. btw, where's the link to the quote from Braylon? Won't it be interesting to see where and when this gets written up, by all of the media oultets who ran the original story?

As one of the best players in U of M history, I would think the attitude here would be generally more favorable toward Braylon. Rich Rod has accomplished less-than-nothing. Don't get me wrong, I'm no Rich Rod hater and am in favor of program solidarity for both current players and alums, at least overtly, but jeez. Braylon should be above reproach from our fans.

Braylon was and is a superior football player. That doesn't give him license to say whatever he wants, and it certainly doesn't lend credibility to anything he chooses to say, about a program that he's no longer connected with. This was a stupid comment. An unneccssary comment. And a pointless, unproductve comment. It's a freakinshly weird comment, if the Edwardses are now going to claim that Braylon was just givin' the old shout-out to Coach Carr. Huh!?! It's led to a national story, albeit a decidedly minor one again reflecting badly on the Rich Rodriguez tenure. Braylon has created a problem; I'm not suggesting that Braylon go to jail, of course! I'm suggesting that Braylon should apologize. Simple. The restitution fits the wrong.
