Utah/Utah State Open Thread
Watching last week's opponent to try to figure out how good they are.
7-0 Utes late first, though USU is driving after a great catch on a deep ball and a roughing the passer penalty. Spread is a little more effective running the ball than we were, which is concerning me. Utah's offense has looked pretty good with an easy TD drive and a second really promising drive that was killed by a penalty that the refs forgot to announce (PAC-12 refs!).
Early indications are a little concerning for the offense but encouraging for the defense.

Any team that beats my team is hated, so go Utah State.

I hope any Non-Conference team that beats UM wins all the rest of their games.
A. So the loss looks more acceptable
B. So we can play them again in the National Championship
Also, I would not like to hear from all those other teams' fans about how Michigan lost to a team that lost to Utah State, so lets go Utes.
September 11th, 2015 at 10:01 PM ^
Agreed. I've never understood the wanting your opponents to lose all their games and look like a poor opponent.

1) It is quite simple. I want them to feel our misery.
2) I don't care about strength of schedule and conference prestige. I do care about Michigan wins and that is literally it.
September 12th, 2015 at 12:32 AM ^
You know the CoFoPo Conmittee cares about strength of schedule, right?
If it came down to M being in that 4-5 range like Baylor, tcu, OSU last year, poor strength o schedule could mean M left out and looking in.
If you want to maintain your position go for it, just realize it is, by matter of objective fact, a nonsensical one.

MGoPoints to you later Sir. Exactly what I was thinking.

Utah State running the ball pretty well.
September 11th, 2015 at 9:57 PM ^
That running back is making good decisions with openings though....
September 11th, 2015 at 9:52 PM ^
thank God for this site. Otherwise I'm just a sad guy in Canada watching utterly unrelated cfb on a Friday night/
Hope Dimicks ok though
September 11th, 2015 at 9:55 PM ^
Looks like that Utah State QB is having a rough time after that hit too.
September 11th, 2015 at 9:58 PM ^
There is no such thing as unrelated college football. College football is the greatest sport on Earth.

I think maybe cfc means Canadian football? But I agree with you either way!
September 11th, 2015 at 10:16 PM ^
To be clear only in the dankest corners of the internet do people talk about the cfl.
September 11th, 2015 at 10:38 PM ^
Haha yeah I stand corrected. Did not read that correctly the first time.
September 11th, 2015 at 9:54 PM ^
Hope Utah does well and makes our hard fought game worth it down the road.
September 11th, 2015 at 9:54 PM ^
It looks like Utah State has been preparing for the Utes for a few weeks, and have a few wrinkles and trick plays they've used already that they didn't use at all last week. They were willing to let last week's game be much closer to not give much for the Utes to look at in terms of their offensive plays and sets.
And now a completely uncovered Utah State receiver in the end zone for a TD.
September 11th, 2015 at 9:55 PM ^
The broadcast crew is not on site on the FS1 game (Miami (YTM) @ FAU). Weird. Did the same yesterday (La Tech @ WKU).
September 11th, 2015 at 10:08 PM ^
This is why no one takes them seriously. Say what you will about ESPN (I'm guilty myself), but their coverage of college football is unrivaled.

Are you implying that ESPN is better than Notre Dames private network? That's as fair and balanced as it gets.
September 11th, 2015 at 10:27 PM ^
ESPN covers college football like it matters. I hate the way NFL networks like NBC and Fox cover CFB . . . as a way to kill time until Sunday when the games really matter to them.
NBC is the worst. Half of a Notre Dame half time is used up pimping the NFL. You get very little coverage of the other CFB games going on.
September 11th, 2015 at 9:55 PM ^
TD Aggies, which they did not manage last week offensively against Southern Utah.
September 11th, 2015 at 9:55 PM ^
Kind of discouraging to see Utah State have success running the ball.

Agreed. Our O-line play was pretty bad, but I'm staying positive because I finally know we're moving in the right direction. We're going to get better, it's just a matter of how soon

why do special teams coaches not drill their guys to not run a return out of the end zone? I understand that the reward is high but the percentages are so low. I really might have to run the numbers on the amount of times they make it back to the 25 or beyond. I'd guess it's less than 30% of the time
September 12th, 2015 at 12:03 AM ^
I've always thought, if I was a coach and someone left the endzone and didn't make it past the 20 (now the 25), I would bench him and go to the next guy.
September 11th, 2015 at 10:00 PM ^
They are making mistakes they weren't last week.
September 11th, 2015 at 10:04 PM ^
Booker seems a bit overrated. Maybe he'll improve here in a bit. He did make a couple good runs but I just can't figure out the hype.
September 11th, 2015 at 10:09 PM ^
I think he suffers just a little bit from Tevan Coleman syndrome. Utah has almost no downfield passing and their whole offense revolves around him or the QB running. Defenses are going to stack the line to stop him.
But obviously the guy is not on Colemans level.
September 11th, 2015 at 10:15 PM ^
He just looks all downhill not much of a duel threat. I agree with you though and if their QB is out we may have a game here.
September 11th, 2015 at 10:05 PM ^
myself on the Brandon Peters thread.
I hate having to root for Utah, it's pissing me off but better for us I guess.
Peter is gonna be tough to best out after his likely RS year.
September 11th, 2015 at 10:12 PM ^
#37 on USU just got a -2 for tackling
September 11th, 2015 at 10:14 PM ^
I think he injured his collarbone on that long run. He got up rubbing it.
September 11th, 2015 at 10:14 PM ^
Wilson's hurt.
September 11th, 2015 at 10:14 PM ^
Their tightend needs an Ace point. I've got no idea how to pronounce his name
September 11th, 2015 at 10:17 PM ^
The better Andrew Luck does in the NFL the better for our QB recruiting with Harbaugh getting a lot of that credit.
and look here, Peters with another beautiful, calm looking spiral for a TD, number 6 too.
September 11th, 2015 at 10:17 PM ^
Wilson doesn't seem to protect himself very much when he runs. Or maybe it's just when I have seen him play.
September 11th, 2015 at 10:18 PM ^
Covey and now Wilson out, two of Utah's top offensive weapons. Covey was eating Utah St. up in that first drive.
September 11th, 2015 at 10:22 PM ^
And Dimick went out too, their best DL probably

September 11th, 2015 at 10:19 PM ^
Can't watch Utah right now...too soon.

Once again an early season loss is not looking nearly as good as we might have hoped.

having Utah lose their two best players is not good. clearly making more mistakes this week as well

I think Dimick is out as well on their D.

but Peters looks way more athletic and a better passer, the passing is close though. but Peters throws a slightly better ball, more zip it seems.

D.Robinson with dreadlocks.. :)

September 11th, 2015 at 10:25 PM ^
Brown is a class act, he ain't no blowhard like Holtz.
