Nine new starters on Stanford's D.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:14 PM ^
It would be nice to see NW beat Stanford. I always like to see the B1G win, with the exception of 2 teams, of course.

Illinois and Rutgers?
September 5th, 2015 at 12:44 PM ^
I don't condone what happened at those universities, but yes, I do still cheer for them. One other that I forgot was PSU. I will never cheer for them again.
September 5th, 2015 at 6:10 PM ^
To believe that both NW and BYU will be losses for Michigan. Based on this weekend they are both better teams. Especially BYU. They are going to spank that ass in Ann Arbor.

I want that sandwich.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:22 PM ^
The Evanston restaurant? Yeah saw that and thought of hopping in the car and grabbing a bite.

Yeah, looked delicious. We have great food out here in Seattle but it's actually tough to find a great sandwich here.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:23 PM ^
I think the guys at Zingerman's consulted on the menu. They have some of the same sandwiches (different names).

Dave's Open Boulevard? Zinny's Staten Island Reuben?

7-7 Rutgers Norfolk st
September 5th, 2015 at 12:24 PM ^
Clayton Thorson really putting on a clinic for the Wildcats right now - 1 for 2 with 2 yards passing. Fortunately, the rushing game is right there to support them with a whole three yards.
Of course, it isn't like Stanford is knocking Northwestern around right now, but they do at least have more than 10 yards of total offense.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:27 PM ^
Stanford took the opening kickoff and marched down the field. But Northwestern held them to a FG and then shut Stanford down on their second possession. Northwestern could give Stanford a game if they can get some offense going.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:26 PM ^
pretty amazing the stanford team jim built is still kind of relevant 5 years later
September 5th, 2015 at 12:27 PM ^
David shaw has done a great job recruiting. Stanford might stay relevant for a while
September 5th, 2015 at 12:34 PM ^
Shaw really hasn't lost a step taking over from Jim Harbaugh and what even more interesting is that schematically they aren't any different. They have stuck to what Harbaugh brought to Stanford and run with it. They probably will be competitive for quite some time.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:55 PM ^
How many times they mention Harbaugh? A couple times it almost sounded like he was still coaching the Cardinal. Not complaining or trolling, just an observation. Been bouncing between a bunch of games and when Stanford is on and on offense his name seems to come up.

NW almost beat UM last year, and by all accounts out played Michigan. If you recall NW dominated the game but kept making mistakes at critical times, allowing a stagnant UM team to take the lead in the final minutes. This year I look for NW to clean Michigans clock. It was pretty clear today they have a far better team than Michigan. Especially knowing that UM basically runs the same offense that Stanford runs. Gonna be a long 6-7 loss year for the Wolverines sorry to say.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:27 PM ^
This Stanford team shows us what we'll be at the end of the year
September 5th, 2015 at 12:29 PM ^
They're not playing that well at the moment in the trenches. Justin Jackson is having a day so far.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:39 PM ^
the Stanford OL is looking worse than Michigan's. If Stanford is indeed superior to Michigan, this is going to be one tough season for the Maize and Blue.
September 5th, 2015 at 3:02 PM ^
Take it back
September 5th, 2015 at 6:03 PM ^
I fully expect that at the end of the year for UM to be about as good as Stanford is today. Very good observation.!
September 5th, 2015 at 12:29 PM ^
Should have been an INT for Stanford
September 5th, 2015 at 12:30 PM ^
to defeat Northwestern! They look fairly stout on defense. Quick LB!
September 5th, 2015 at 2:05 PM ^
We lost to the Utes by a TOUCHDOWN! Why are you guys are acting like the season is already lost? Hoping to beat Northwestern...
September 5th, 2015 at 2:13 PM ^
Because the offense isn't looking a bit better than last year would be my guess.
September 5th, 2015 at 6:06 PM ^
Watch UM vs. NW last year?? NW should have won and clearly outplayed UM. Anyone not a UM fan will agree. So don't act as if Michigan is above NW, sorry as it may be UM is a NW peer, and maybe even subordinate.

FWIW at 1pm Illinois plays the game against Kent State on BTN that was rain delayed from last night.

long time friend/fraternity brother and u of m ball player has a son on that kent state team. go flash!
September 5th, 2015 at 12:33 PM ^
Let me know when De'Veon Smith gets one of those and struggles and come back to me.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:37 PM ^
The OL desperately needs the touch of a healthy Drake Johnson to help them out.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:39 PM ^
The good news is, I think the over-under on how many of these Northwestern defensive players Smith could drag across the first down marker is well north of 3.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:44 PM ^
There was only one lane that size...and yes, he missed it. But no Michigan RB has gotten push on the OL since Mike Hart was running off the left side behind Jake Long.
We can knock Smith all we want, but the holes aren't there. And it's not like he's bouncing it outside every carry like Mike Shaw. He's fighting and beast moding his way for 2-3 yards that aren't even there half the time.
Drake Johnson is better fit, yes, because he also is tough as hell and he has more speed where the other 3 don't. But Drake Johnson wasn't going for big yardage versus Utah. There was nothing there.
I'd like to see us go less MANBALL and try to open running lanes via the spread like we did at times with Brandon Minor.
September 5th, 2015 at 1:07 PM ^
Smiths radar sends him right into opposing players instead of a crease or hole. Thats why we always see him fighting off so mant tackles.
September 5th, 2015 at 2:31 PM ^
I saw two...only one was the one we all know and discuss. Where were all these holes he missed?
I call bullshit, people just want something to complain about.
Utah has a GREAT RB...he didn't have many holes either. Smith looked just like Booker and vice versa. Both ran hard and made the most of what was there.
They both played REALLY tough front 7s...that's what happens when you don't have a dominant OL and you go up against a dominate DL. Is Booker all of a sudden trash with no vision? No. We were just pretty damn good.
Only difference between the two was Booker was a threat in the passing game and Smith can't catch for shit.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:34 PM ^
Wow, quick first quarter in Evanston. Surprised Stanford isn't throwing it more.

Wow, did those look good! I might do that next Saturday morning.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:39 PM ^
stilll very early but either NW is gonna be decent this year or stanford is not as good as everyone thought.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:47 PM ^
Yes, it is hard to tell. I guess I would lean toward NW being good this year, but what do I know? The Wildcats' DL is creating a lot of pressure on the QB.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:39 PM ^
Northwestern looking really good right now, especially in the trenches where I thought they'd be overmatched.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:41 PM ^
Need some work on shotgun snaps though. And throwing passes to guys in purple.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:41 PM ^
Thorson needs to calm down and stop throwing it straight into coverage. Don't force anything or make stupid mistakes because that will cost more than the possible benefit, as we all know.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:43 PM ^
I believe it is so I'll give him at least a half to settle into being a collegiate QB.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:48 PM ^
Yeah, he's actually playing very well for his first start. He just can't turnover the ball, which he hasn't to to to his credit.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:51 PM ^
He hasn't, but only because the Stanford safety dropped a sure pick.
September 5th, 2015 at 12:46 PM ^
That was a really nice throw by Hogan, but Northwestern is still looking good
