a highly regarded, true mlb would be a huge get. it'll be a tough pull to get him out of hotlanta but our depth chart has to be extremely appealing.
December 31st, 2009 at 11:36 AM ^
why do we have to pull him out of Hotlanta?
December 31st, 2009 at 11:39 AM ^
my reason for mentioning it is UT's proximity to atl and the chance to use the term hotlanta whenever possible.
December 31st, 2009 at 11:46 AM ^
Do you mean the Vols? UT is in Austin.
December 31st, 2009 at 11:49 AM ^
you're really adding a lot to this topic.
December 31st, 2009 at 11:58 AM ^
I'm sorry.
Saying UT can be confusing. I've just never heard someone say UT for anything other than Texas, but it could just be that I've never lived around many Tennessee fans.
December 31st, 2009 at 12:04 PM ^
In Tennessee and the SEC UT refers to Tennessee. You have to realize that around the country there are many schools that have the same initials. MSU in SEC land for instance is Mississippi State.
December 31st, 2009 at 12:19 PM ^
Right, and USC means South Carolina. I understand that very well. But we aren't in SEC land, and if I used the acronym MSU on here, people would probably assume I meant Michigan State, unless I specified.
My point was that if you want people to understand what you are saying, you should eliminate ambiguity. I've never heard of this recruit before, how was I to know he wasn't a Texas commit?

"You can't spell Citrus without U-T." ~ Steve Spurrier
December 31st, 2009 at 1:10 PM ^
You may refer to the University of Tennessee as "the Fightin' Orangesicles." The University of Texas, of course, would be "the Fightin' Burnt Orangesicles."
December 31st, 2009 at 3:32 PM ^
After moving from Michigan to Oregon I had to relearn every football team acronym and when talking about schools from back home I have to refer to them by their full name.
UW - Washington
OSU - Oregon State
PSU - Portland State
MSU - Montana State
IU - Idaho

"t.u." Helps with the distinction
December 31st, 2009 at 1:16 PM ^
When Steve Spurrier once said, "You can't spell 'Citrus Bowl' without UT," I don't think he was talking about Texas.
December 31st, 2009 at 1:47 PM ^
He was talking about Toledo.

It would be HUGE to get this kid....not just for his services, the depth, but almost just as important, to put a dent into SEC territory. We've been recruiting Florida pretty well, but it seems that much of the South is pretty much owned by the big time SEC schools in that they can pick and choose who they want and generally keep the best ones.
SEC Schools (and USC) have been coming into Big Ten territory for years now and it would be nice to start taking some of their prized recruits. This is actually one (probably the only one) reason that I wouldn't be too dissapointed if the Gholston to Alabama rumor is not true....Nick Satan needs to know that he can't walk into Michigan and get his pick of the litter.
That being said, we haven't had a player from Atlanta in a while, so it would be nice. With Pettway and Brown now gone, the Georgia pipeline is getting thin.

that for the prospects the schools are watching Webb listed Dior Mathis for Sparty and not us. I knew we weren't pursuing him much, but I hadn't realized we totally dropped it.
December 31st, 2009 at 11:45 AM ^
I think it's pretty much common knowledge at this point that Dior isn't high on our list, nor are we high on Dior's. It would be a nice get, but I don't know if there are any current targets that I'd expense for his services.
He's a probably Oregon or MSU commit, which would be a good commit for both schools.
December 31st, 2009 at 11:57 AM ^
the staff initially wanted dior in the slot bc of his great quickness and speed. we're slated to load up on other corners they like more. he's a very talented player but is very, very small (5'8'' tops).
December 31st, 2009 at 11:57 AM ^
he was small. Not saying you can't get a 5'8 guy thats a great cover corner, but I like seeing taller guys just so they can't get completely picked on by the 6'2 receivers.
December 31st, 2009 at 11:44 AM ^
How can RR continue to recruit so many players? It seems like there is going to be some decommits.
December 31st, 2009 at 12:09 PM ^
if Gholston were to commit to someone besides Michigan State. With his combination of size and speed, he is going to be a "man among boys" at the college level.
December 31st, 2009 at 12:26 PM ^
but he's a similar prospect to crable coming out of high school. they have similar body types, speed, and offer sheets. crable was very good his senior year but in no way a "man among boys." let's wait until he proves something at the next level before we anoint him the next brandon graham (this was a man among boys).

This is much nicer roundup!

Regarding Gardner, I am excited to see his pocket presence. I hear he is very commanding while standing back there. Also, the article points out how accurate he is on his throws. Combine that with what we know about his wheels, and this class may very well be known as "the Devin Gardner class" in the years to come. The kid is going to be special.
December 31st, 2009 at 1:45 PM ^
Just read ESPN's first comment with Devin Gardner as the subject, it said he was part of the "play of the day," where he scrambled from the pocket, pulling guys out of coverage, and then splitting defensive backs for a touchdown pass.

Gardner appears to be the leader. Took the first team walk through reps on day two, and every service I've seen has all but declared him the starter.
December 31st, 2009 at 3:02 PM ^
That may be true, but with our defense the way it is, I sure would like to see a Crable running around. Well, minus the penalties and the *ahem* missed field goal blocking assignments...
