OTish - Poor Damn Ablauf

Submitted by gustave ferbert on

Seriously, after retreating into the submarine and reading the presser from the coordinators, I can't imagine a worse task than what Dave Ablauf has right now. . .

Getting these coaches to talk to the media is such a thankless endeavor.  Can you imagine being Ablauf trying to get Harbaugh to talk to the media after Michigan loses a game?

That poor man is going to snap.

I don't get the bitching about the submarine. These journalists have had the easiest job in the world since January with Harbaugh practically writing their articles for them with his wacky tweets and adventures.

Boohoo I actually might have to do some work for 3 weeks while Michigan is in camp.

I have no idea what you're talking about

...his job is to work at the pleasure of, and the direction of, and the best interests of the university, the department, and the program. If anything this is less work for him. You should feel sorry for the press. Haha jk, especially when it comes to the Detroit print press.

You are crazy. I could care less but Hoke gave out way more info than these guys. I think you are blinded by your wish to critcize Hoke. Take a look at this transcript I pulled up from same time in fall camp 2013 (http://mgoblog.com/content/fall-camp-presser-transcript-8-21-13-brady-h…). Hoke's press conference there is way more detail and insight than the two yesterday. I have no problem with Drevno/Durkin saying nothing...but you are crazy if you think Hoke's was anywhere near this.

You're completely misinformed.

His job is to make sure the coaches deliver the right message (one directed by the head coach and/or the athletics director).

His job is to manage the media.

...Ablauf couldn't give two shits about these coordinator pressers. I bet the head SID down at Baylor's having a worse week than Ablauf, I guarantee it. Same with the head SID at USC.

Ablauf is doing his job, well, and getting paid a shit ton of money to do it. This thread is stupid.

I've had limited encounters with Mr. Ablauf, but he seems like a real professional at his job.  I don't think he's fretting over the lack of interaction between the Mark Snyders of the world and our coaching staff.

I thought he'd been fired for some reason.  I'm sure he's fine.  He's been around the block.   The only people annoyed with the pressers are some fans and the media, who think it is their right to know every detail.

It doesn't require much "imagining" to come up with a worse task.

That time he had to manage DB / Shanecussion gate  was probably a bit worse for him than "coach isn't talking right now."

Harbaugh may be silent, and Hacket may back him, but its all above board. Given what we've seen so far I think its less likely he'll ever be put into a position like he was during the Morris concussion.

His behavior as reported makes him seem like a straight shooter. I think he'll be fine now.

Not sure you get how it works. Ablauf doesn't get Harbaugh to talk to the media. Ablauf releases statements, schedules conferences, etc. If Harbaugh doesn't want to do a press conference, there is no conference. Kind of like right now.

Go read the snippet from Endzone on the Minnesota aftermath.

Even more to the point, Michigan beatwriters have had the easiest 6-7 months they'll ever have.  Pretty sure Ablauf cares less about this than me.

That the media may be a bit intimidated by him.

But I would be surprised if he takes the Bo route after games.

Hopefully he will not endure too many losses.  He can be ebullient after the many victories though.

Seriously? Imagine working under David Brandon while dealing with the fallout from a cratering program and a failing coach.

Ablauf wakes up each morning, thinks "I work with Jim Hackett and Jim Harbaugh now" and has a big fucking smile.

But I will rather have him spend as little time as possible with the media and allocate his other time preparing for the next game so that we win it too. Once the season commences, all that truly interests me is the on-field performances. We have a legacy to uphold, the media just wants to sell advertisements.

Personally I absolutely love Harbaugh's disdain for the media. He's not a total obstinate ass like Belicheck but it's just as genuine, just more clever. I'm leery of any coach who loves that limelight. It distracts from the team and the mission. It also seemed so contrived when Hoke would try to play that part. He never mastered it. Harbaugh is so natural at it.

I think the local talking heads and media outlets have been pushing this topic a bit too much. The fact that a submarine can be made in a time where every person has a smart phone to text, tweet, or tag something. Where everyone can connect to everything. That's the impressive part and a story worth talking about.

Oh and to stay on topic, Mr. Ablauf has more to do than to make sure that his head football coach is talking to the media. He's more concerned with the message sent and the image of the school, i think. He's probably happy that Harbaugh was able to create a submarine.

I love the whole idea of keeping any tidbit of information that could even remotely benefit a future opponent from seeing the light of day.

Lloyd was great at it, too.

Yes, we all want to know who's starting and who's injured. But how does that help Michigan?
