Would you like to see alcohol sold in Michigan Stadium

Submitted by Blueblood2991 on

Saw this a few weeks ago that they are doing a study at OSU considering selling alcohol at games.  They would join Maryland, Minnesota, and Purdue as other B1G teams that sell booze.

Would you like to see alcohol sold at The Big House?

The two events at Michigan Stadium that have served alcohol (Winter Classic & Man U vs Real Madrid) yeilded only 3 arrests between them.  The only arrest from the soccer game was for the fan that jumped on the field.

My gut-reaction is no, but it probably wouldn't make a whole lot of difference.  If people want to be drunk, they will sneak stuff in or just pound drinks at the tailgate beforehand anyway.

It will be too expensive for the students to get any more drunk than they already are... and overall no one will be binging on $12 budweisers.. so go ahead and let people who want to spend the money and sip an overpriced beer have fun

From a financial standpoint, this seems like one of the few untapped revenue streams that wouldn't be insulting if it were tapped. I'm indifferent on the question of selling alcohol in the stadium, but I'd sure as hell prefer seeing that over yogurt ads.

A study at OSU, you say? Hmmm

But actually I'm pretty neutral. If they did sell, I think you'd have to have a cutoff point sometime around the end of halftime.

I think if we could look at the impact introducing beer had at a venue remotely like Michigan Stadium that would be useful. Did Wiscy always sell alcohol?

I can see how it could generate increased drunkenness and even worse aisle crowding, but I can also entertain arguments that the impact wouldn't be that bad.

What we don't need to do is sell beer just to make money.

Surveying the fanbase is one thing; presenting only two options and saying "you're got to pick one" is another.  That's the kind of garbage I might expect Brandon to pull.

There are lots of ways to increase revenue.  And beyond that, instead of solely looking to increase revenues for our $150 million athletic program, how about reducing expenditures?  Do we really need to spend $20 mill on that rowing facility?

It depends. Are we still pretending college football players are amateur scholar-athletes, and that fans are mostly college students and minors? If not, then yes.

I'm not sure what saying college athletes are amateurs has anything to do with the ages of the fans. I don't think anyone has suggested that most fans are minors. And somewhere around a third to a half of the students attending (because grad students) are of age anyway.

Yes. I'm a beer drinker, but I can't see myself buying an expensive beer in the stadium. I like that it'd be an option. I like to have a few before the game at the tailgate. With how prices are, there's no one someone is going to pound drinks at the game. I don't see it being a problem. If someone wants to get drunk, they would already be from the tailgating.

Yes.

Whether it is sold in the stadium or not anyone intending to drink at the game will figure out how.

It would be interesting if they used it to selectively highlight only Michigan-based smaller breweries.

The issue is of course logistics. The Big House is not suited for folks getting up for any reason during the game and coming back--even for admirable reasons, like getting another beer.

This somehow works at the Rose Bowl. But really only for halftime beers.

I suppose I am at "yes, with reservations."

I don't agree with this. I went to CMU and they don't serve alcohol. In my many years, we went to Ford Field for the MAC Championship and Bowl games and the crowd was the same as before. The amount of beer being consumed was less than I thought it would be. The environments were very similar for fans.

I think I'd like to see it happen so that if I wanted to go in the stadium early to enjoy the pre-game, I could still enjoy a couple beers before the game starts. Once the game started, I don't think I would buy anymore.

Well, if you are going to drink until you puke, there is no better place to do so than that giant toilet bowl of a stadium in Columbus.
