Wolverines Are 5th Most Popular Bet at Vegas Superbook to Win the National Championship
Interesting. It might be because UM has such bad odds (and Harbaugh of course). Alternatively, we might just have a huge delusional alumni base. The Wolverines have also received the 5th most overall bets placed at Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook.
I'm sure Vegas is thrilled to be getting all that action on Michigan. I understand it's possible that Michigan could win it all, but it is extremely unlikely. I will not be making that bet.

Vegas was built on the backs of fools. And business continues to be good.
sports gambling and cash poker games. In poker games it's called the rake. In sports gambling, it's why you need to bet about 110 (give or take based on establishment) to make 100 on a heads up bet. In those to ventures, the casino isn't gambling, they are more so taking a facilitation fee.
*two... sorry

Yeah, but they only rake the winnings, so you don't mind as much. Take a couple bucks off a $500 pot, sure!

Up yours Vegas!
I just noticed that Cameron isn't actually giving the finger... pointless!

Of course we want Michigan to win!
I think that goes without saying. I'll add a GO BLUE!! to the end of all my posts regardless of the situation so everyone knows that I'm a Michigan fan and not remotely objective.
I think only PSU has more living alumni than us. Plus people know what Harbaugh has done in previous stops. If we win the B1G this year that means wins over likely top 10 teams, maybe top 5 teams in OSU and MSU. It's not crazy if we have good QB play.
@Utah? I like it.
August 2nd, 2015 at 10:12 PM ^
i like it straight up. no way jimmy is losing that game. utah is the first gimmick offense he takes down.
Gimmick offense? When we played Utah last season, I don't remember them running a gimmick offense. I realize they have a new OC but I haven't heard that they are implementing the A-11 or anything.

Great motivator. Won't be hard to get the team's focus for the opener...
Michgian has a good track record as a road dog.
Yeah, but what's our track record as a road dog with a new coaching staff with a squad coming off a sub-.500 season? I'm actually pretty optimistic about our chances overall this season, but if we're going to have a disappointing effort this season, it will be this game.
than Michigan. So...delusional fan bases at least has something to do with explaining the quantity of betting action.
August 2nd, 2015 at 10:45 PM ^
How so? Notre Dame just played for the national championship a couple of years ago. How are they more delusional than ours when we haven't even been relevant in almost a decade?

Their 12-1 season was clearly the outlier much like our 11-2 year in 2011. Stars allign, lightning in bottle, etc.
They've lost at least 4 games every other season under Brian Kelly, three of which were 5 loss seasons.
We sucked during that same time, I know but they are delusional. Their schedule is tough this year, if they only lose once they deserve to be in the playoffs but it ain't happening.
As bad as we sucked, we had our way with them.
their come from ahead losses and implosions against us were spectacular.

And don't look remotely poised to compete for a title this year. Bets aren't about what happened two years ago. Alabama could go 7-5 one year and everyone can look at the roster and see a team that can win it all. Nobody would logically say that about UM or ND right now. That's the point.
August 3rd, 2015 at 12:54 AM ^
In other news, Lou Holtzshe has ND winning it again.
The OP asked a question about fan base delusion possibly being a reason for Michigan being a popular National Title pick. I cited ND being even more popular a pick than Michigan. Also consider that ND has much better odds to win it than Michigan with an absolutely brutal schedule. I think citing ND fans as delusional is right on the money in this case. FYI I do think Michigan will be relevant and contending for a National Championship before the next time ND does.

I don't think he ever said they were more delusional than us. He just said delusional fanbases clearly plays into this, which is pretty much an undeniable fact.

Better question is, what does DameFan think?
Wolvernies?
Umm... The Universities mascot?
Interesting. I did not know there was another way to spell Wolverines.

Posted from my cell phone. Good catch.
That's a lot of kool aid.
not fifth best odds, so, irrelevant.
August 2nd, 2015 at 10:35 PM ^
Not irrelevant. Fifth most bets to win the title is nuts. It's 100-1 odds, so the return is good, but you've got to be drunk out of your mind on kool-aid to think that's a good bet. Just pissing money away.
August 2nd, 2015 at 10:55 PM ^
If Vegas had Michigan at 10-1, it would be crazy. If Vegas had Michigan at 5000-1, they would rightly be the most popular bet.
People making this bet don't expect to win. They just believe that the expected return is positive.
August 3rd, 2015 at 10:05 AM ^
It's the 5th most bets, not necessarily the 5th highest amount of money being bet. If 500,000 folks dropped a buck on Michigan to win it all, just for kicks, then that could hardly be called "pissing money away".
I don't think its as much people think they will actually win, but the payout if they happen to win on a $100 bet is like $10,000.

I believe the Cubs are always the most bet on team to win the world series too every year. This means nothing.
August 2nd, 2015 at 10:57 PM ^
Don't compare is to the Cubs, ever.
I made the bet at +4000. Other teams with the same odds were Stanford, Ole Miss, A&M and UCLA.

A&M should've never left the Big 12.
August 2nd, 2015 at 10:38 PM ^
They have benefited big time by leaving. Take a look at their recruiting and the money they receieve from the SEC Network (probably helped upgrade their stadium, which is now 4th largest in the nation). Big 12 has become a joke since A&M and Nebraska left.
August 2nd, 2015 at 10:42 PM ^
How? Nebraska has been a steady 9-4 since the move and A&M hasn't done much other than beating Alabama that one time. If anything Missouri has done the most.

A&M is a little like Sparty in that they have the douchier fans, less history, and a massive inferiority complex with Texas. With the move to the SEC, they can get out of Texas' shadow.
True. Sparty should move there as well.
G'bye.
August 2nd, 2015 at 10:39 PM ^
Agreed. Although when they made the move it made sense at the time as the Big 12 was on the verge of dissolution at the time.

And why is that? So you can go 12-1 in the Big 12 and not get into the playoff? Why the hell wouldn't you leave the Big 12 for the best conference in college football?
