None of the Detroit teams made the list. Biggest surprise for me was the Houston Texans ranked 16th with a value of $1.85 billion. That's higher than teams like the Steelers, Bears and 49ers.

Yeah I was really shocked by that too. This article gives a pretty interesting take on why it might be worth that money.

But IMO, it's a pivotal time for that franchise. The Lakers have been down for a few years, and Kobe is about to retire. If they can keep the talent they have and stay a consistent playoff team for the next 5-10 years, they will capture a big share of that market.

The Texans are ranked so high due largely to their stadium.  While it is technically "publicly owned", the Texans organization owns a huge chunk of it and it is already paid off in full.  They make tons of cash on concerts, rodeos, soccer matches etc.  Not to mention that Houston is a huge city, and people in Texas are nuts about football.

Potential explanation for the Houston Texans being so high: Don't they own their stadium outright, where the other teams you listed play in publicly finanaced stadiums? That could be a big part of the value of the franchise. I'm pretty sure it's the same for the three NFL teams in the top 10 as well.

Notre Dame's not listed?  The list is invalid!

I don't care that this is a list of pro franchises.  Notre Dame is worth the most - we have Touchdown Jesus!  And gold helmets!!  And Freakbass!!!  And an agreement with UA!!!!

Sincerely,

The Knicks at 2.5b is mostly due to the money they still owe Melo.

But yeah, these lists always make me laugh because comparing Euro soccer to basically anything else in terms of value feels weird, as its almost like they are working from a different financial currency compared to other sports.
