USC in trouble?

Submitted by WolvinLA2 on

If you guys know more about this than me please post it below, but I just heard them say on ESPN2 that Joe McKnight, RB at USC, is in trouble because he's been driving a car owned by a Santa Monica businessman. He might not play in the Emerald Bowl.

Is this finally the time USC gets busted?

Either way: hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

The NCAA could find bags of money with cute little tags attached saying "from your favorite booster" in each of the players dorm rooms and two things would happen: jack and shit.

USC is made of teflon. I think we all learned that with OJ Mayo and Reggie Bush.

I agree - however if McKnight sticks around at USC the NCAA might have some teeth to investigate the situation. If he takes off, he has no reason to talk to the NCAA and the matter will be buried....again.

What the hell? Michigan broke a rule every other school has broken (practice hours) and the NCAA is on us like stink on shit. USC may have given Reggie Bush $300,000 and other athletes countless other benefits and the NCAA has done nothing. WTF?

When USC (and others) have those willing to self-snitch, then the NCAA will come around. Read this very carefully: the NCAA does not investigate initially, they wait until someone has dug up the dirt and, in turn, contacted them. Then they go look and see if the dirt is really shit. If there is incontrovertible evidence that, yes, this is really fecal matter, then they punish. The NCAA, above all else, doesn't ever want to appear incorrect. They are going to be 100% sure before they move in.

is the ed martin scandal... there were alway implications that something was going on. but it wasn't until the IRS and the FBI raided his house and found stuff linking him to taylor, traylor, bullock and white that the NCAA finally stepped in to investigate.

No offense but you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. The man that allegedly gave Bush money was a sports agent in San Diego completely unaffiliated with the school. USC didn't give Bush anything. The only thing USC may be guilty of is knowing about his transgressions.

Bush is dirty as hell. That doesn't make USC football dirty. But, people are going to believe what they want to and so it is easier to paint the entire football program as the villain. Innocent until proven guilty doesn't exist anymore.

The difference being that Ed Martin was indicted for a gambling ring and at least one of the players he bribed confessed. The testimony of the wannabe sports agent that gave Bush money has been suppressed due to a settlement and ultimately a "hush" payoff by Bush himself. I never said USC didn't have it's question marks. On the contrary the administrators and coaches should have definitely been watching one of their star players more closely but its tough to police the family of one player living in an entire different city. Bush wasn't riding around in an SUV though. His family was living in a posh mansion. I would suspect Carroll is a little too busy gameplanning to concern himself with the living arrangements of Bush's parents.

Actually, no the wannabe agent did buy Bush a tricked out car which he proudly rode around campus. Also, when Bush actually brought multiple agents into the locker room on multiple occasions were the SC coaches too busy to say hmm, our heisman trophy candidate is bringing sleazy businessmen/agents into the locker room before and after games. Wonder what's up with that? Sometimes work just piles up I guess.

Also I'd like to hear someone try to claim the USC administration was ignorant of the whole OJ Mayo thing when everyone on earth knew Mayo hung with runners for agents in HS and the very same runner who HAD PROVIDED ILLEGAL PAYMENTS TO USC PLAYERS IN THE PAST was his number one handler and constantly was with Mayo before during and after games and was even at practices and spoke with Floyd numerous times.

I mean think about it. this man was at SC practices and he ...was... known...to have...given...money...to...usc...basketball players.... in the past. Unbelievable.

The double standard for SC is just appalling.

how do you figure that ed martin wasn't michigans fault??? fisher knew what was going on and he ignored it. martin was also around when frieder was the coach.

Bullock , Traylor , and Taylor all denied any involvement , while still playing . Bullock played a couple years after it all started . Everyone praised him as a Michigan Man . I used to see him at grocery store , and I wanted to say ED MARTIN , but I thought he'd punch me . Now I wish I had done it .

Also I read an article that the Ncaa hadn't even questioned the uconn trainer who allegedly was being a bad boy. The NCAA is a joke. Yahoo basically gift wrapped two huge stories for the NCAA regarding money and players. They don't do anything. Butention tooich practice and they are on campus is 2 days.

USC is located in a huge media market meaning tremendous revenue in television for the PAC 10 membership when negotiating television etc. That same market is huge for BCS marketing etc. So there it is...chase the money.

The implications for an emasculated PAC 10 (i.e., with USC penalized like, say, Alabama 2002 to 2006 including scholarship reductions) are significant. Obviously, other university presidents and related NCAA power brokers in the PAC 10 are likely not going to report them and one can't much expect the NCAA to act on the noble advice of actual fans. So what will likely happen?

Expect nothing to change.

I feel sorry for the future football and basketball coaches at USC. All these allegations are going to have a snowball effect and the walls are going to come tumbling down. Just look at the damage one incident did to Michigan basketball. This could possibly be worse.

I'm sick of both USC and OSU always getting off the hook with major violations. We are going to get punished for a relatively minor violation that almost every major program condones! I hope the punishment is only a loss of 1 to 2 scholarships in 2011. Though, I'm still fearful that the NCAA may try to make an example of our program, then I will really be pissed!!!!

How did OSU get off the hook on that one? There was an investigation and player interviews, I mean the man was driving a car from a dealer that his coach recommended... IIRC I don't think that there was even an official penalty for that.

NCAA new math:

Players getting bribes Players having to work too hard

Must protect those players.

I'm sure you're being genuine, and that you mean no harm; but that is a really overwrought prediction. If the NCAA can justify something like that, it will be because they've discovered something more, that the Free Press hasn't discovered or reported. You think the Free Press is holding back negative information about the Michigan football staff?

that the NCAA is done looking into USC, which they aren't. This is one more thing that will likely be looked into during their still ongoing investigation. The NCAA doesn't have subpoena power, which makes the investigation challenging, especially when universities (and players) don't cooperate. Just because it takes them years to finish an investigation doesn't mean penalties aren't coming.

It's an old article from the LA Times, but it gives some indication of just how bad it might be for USC...

that "USC are the teflon dons" is just silly. There are allegations against USC, and the NCAA has actually spent multiple years actively investigating it, and have not concluded the investigation.

"If they had failed to fill out practice logs, THEN we're talking investigation." Again, there IS an ongoing investigation into USC.

Sorry, it's not just your post, but several others in this thread, that imply that USC has already been cleared of all charges, and that the NCAA doesn't want to punish USC. It's a point of view that simply doesn't mesh with the facts. On top of that, continuing to whine that an ongoing investigation of another school hasn't yet resulted in sanctions makes Michigan fans look uninformed, petty, jealous, or all of the above.
