Another ESPN 150 decommit for the Irish

Submitted by Gerald R. Ford on

Tony Hurd, cornerback from Missouri decommits per ESPN.
They rate him as the #10 corner. Tough times for ND on defense. They may be looking at some of the same issues that we dealt with in 08 and 09.

When attrrition and decommits happened at UM, the press blamed RR. As of yet, though, I don't hear anything remotely like that coming from South Bend. Funny how some coaches get the "white stallion" treatment from the media and some just get shat upon.

We have on this same board a posting about the biggest upset of the decade being App St/MI. Let's not forget that in 2006, we almost suffered a bigger upset against Ball State. That "Game of the Century" almost never happened at the hands of that great coach.

Lloyd definitely coached his pants off a billion times better than Weis. Still, more Michigan fans probably wanted him gone than those that wanted him to stay.

If not for the dramatic divorce and $4 mil settlement with WVa, things would have been smoother and people more forgiving of any missteps. That's what makes the situation different.

Umm; as much as we like to draw parallels to UM football, there isn't one here. When Rodriguez got here we lost a five star quarterback and a five star offensive tackle, both of whom had already started games in maize and blue. Spin it any way you want, but ND losing a few random recruits is not even comparable.

I heard so much garbage from ND fans during the first year of RR's tenure it was unreal. I don't feel the least bit sorry for the bastards and like Tater, hope he feels the same media wrath for the defections as RR did.

How many de-commits is this now, 3 or 4?

How many weeks are there until Signing Day, about 7?

I think it's way premature to think that the Irish are going to be dealing with a 20-person hemorrhage of personnel of the kind Michigan dealt with, especially given that Kelly has plenty of time to bring in replacement talent.

And really, the "Michigan media paranoia" angle is kind of weak. Who gives a toss what the media thinks - Rich Rod is going to win with his players, and I can't wait to see it.

Maybe you and I don't care what the media thinks because we are fans of UM and know the real stories behind all the BS, but the general public are not quite as informed.

For that reason, they care about what the MSM say about UM and RR because that is all they have to go on.

The reputation of UM is important, and it is not only based on the thoughts and beliefs of UM alum's. The general public form opinions based on what they hear and see in the media, as do many recruits and parents of recruits because they have never set foot on campus or visited a UM blog.

It is for these reasons that I DO care what is written and broadcast in the media because it certainly affects UM's reputation, whether you want to admit it or not.

Michigan will be a top 10 public university no matter what the mainstream media thinks of their football team.

Rich Rod is doing a fantastic job of recruiting even coming off a 5-7 season.

When Michigan wins 8-9 games next year, the media will change their tune and claim that "Michigan is back." And then those people who have savaged Rodriguez will claim he's a genius, simply because he now has the talent he needs to succeed.

So again, why should I be concerned about the short term denigration of the school I love, when I know it's a long term winner no matter what these media idiots say? I'm not.

"why should I be concerned about the short term denigration of the school I love, when I know it's a long term winner no matter what these media idiots say"

You continue to verify my point. Although you and I love the school, many people and potential recruits do not, they are indifferent towards it. So when the mainstream media bash us the way they have during the past few years it tarnishes our reputation in their eyes.

The fact that it will change in the future is irrelevant to the here and now. We may well be losing (or have lost) potential recruits because of all the BS that has been caused by the MSM and their blatant disregard for facts.

You are claiming what the MSM and general population think is irrelevant and shouldn't matter. I am of the opinion that their view is equally or more important than people like ours (people who are so in love with UM that nothing could change it).

I think this because UM can't be satisfied with where it is today (as a football program or a university at large). It wants to continue to grow and improve and attract the best of the young talent and minds in the country.

I think that the msm plays a big role in how these youngsters view our beloved UM and currently it is having a negative impact.

If Michigan wins 10 games next year, the mainstream media could write articles claiming that Rich Rod sets fire to chimps in his backyard and doesn't believe in global warming. It won't matter.

Smart people will see that Michigan has a hell of a football team and recruits will also notice.

The people that won't or can't recognize that aren't worth trying to convince in the first place.

If Christ tranfers and his best OL transfers to USC, then he will probably start getting more heat.

Boren transferring to OSU plus his family values comments and Mallett leaving really started the $hit storm that was was RR's first year. WVU and its fan also did a good job of tarnishing his reputation (shredding documents, knocking up a cheerleader, etc..).

I also think that the 2007 season made Michigan a great targest for the media in general (App St).

I suspect that they will lose some guys to begin with, but then pick up some guys they normally would not have gotten once Kelly gets his feet on the ground.

There is a good chance this guy can be replaced by signing day with another top cb prospect. It is the signing day decommits that really sting because you can't replace them. For example, Graves and Jones last year hurt. Newsom and Beaver, not so much.

Well shit man, now I know. I'm use to the GBW premium board where they are big on no swearing. THERE MIGHT BE KIDS PAYING $9.95/MONTH FOR FOOTBALL INFO.

the kid is from Texas not Missouri. The confusion probably arose because he lives in Missouri City, Texas. Also, I've heard he likely ends up at A&M.

I care more about what the local media have to say about MSU vs. UM, rather than what the media have to say about ND. Notre Dame will always be a media darling.

Look at Charlie Weis. He had several more years of underachieving and was arguably a bigger dick than Rodriguez, yet he didn't receive nearly the amount of flat-out negative attention as Rodriguez has.

Don

First, he's of Irish extraction and grew up in the Boston area, so all the ND faithful and all the east coast media idiots will feel he's one of them. Like your stereotypical New Yorker or big city guy, he's glib as hell in an interview, is quick on his feet verbally, and can banter with the best of them with Dan Patrick or whatever blow-dried ESPN asshole who's interviewing him. He comes across as very confident, even cocky, but (to me anyhow) not the arrogant jerk that Weis came across as. He gives the impression he can talk reasonably knowledgeably about things other than football, which the non-athletic dickish nerd types like Rosenberg will just get a gigantic erection over.

And, perhaps most importantly in comparison to Rich Rodriguez, he doesn't hail from a small town in West By-God Virginia and speak with a noticeable southern-ish accent.

In other words, completely aside from what transpires out on the field, Brian Kelly is a big-city media guy's wet dream, while RR confirms in their own minds their pre-existing notion that anybody from the backwoods is a barely literate bumpkin. Add to that the disappointment of RR's last two seasons in contrast to Kelly's recently achieved status of the New Hot Young Coach, and RR can't win the hearts and minds of the media until Michigan wins many more games that it loses.
