looking very good after 4, as the Tigers lead now 3-1.

We really need the return of the "good" JV if Detroit is to have much of a chance to again win the Central Division.  Our starting pitching is a mess right now, with only Price and Simon pitching well.  Being already 62 games into the season, 10 of more wins are needed from Verlander.

5th inning and his control is starting to fade.  He may be getting tired.  Needs a DP ball.

Yeah, he's at 75 right now, with the bases loaded. If he gets a DP here, he might go 6. If not, he might not make it out of the 5th.

Nice job to pitch out of that just giving up the sac fly. There were certainly some good signs from JV today but obviously he still needs to build up the endurance.

Overall I'm quite pleased with how he's looking for his first start. Threw a few 96-97mph pitches. Hopefully he's healthy.

kinda secretly hope we tank because we can get a king's ransom for price, cespedes, and maybe even simon or soria...need to restock young talent, and none of those 4 guys will be tigers next year.

but who in the American League strikes you as one? Lots folks been saying Kansas City but they have been one of the worst hitting teams in AL since beginning of May and have some of worst starting pitching.

It's wide open this year with lots of parity so I think you may as well go for it as the future looks bleak and may be last real shot they have. Just get into the playoffs then anything can happen.

As for Price, I agree he gets you a decent player(s) but can you imagine how bad this rotation will be without him.

Think says U.S. should be let go since it's obvious he isn't right for the job. However, the team struck out a dozen times. How many with men on base..,,8? The first casualty should be the hitting coach.

The Indians pitching staff is on pace to shatter the single season MLB record for 'most strikeouts in a season' by a team (the same record they set last season).

With that said I think the Tigers need to do something with Castellanos. He's not showing anything offensively again this season and this comes from a position (3rd base) where most teams get above average offensive production.

Castellanos isn't giving us anything from 3B and needs to be in Toledo sooner rather than later. But here's the problem: who replaces him? Josh Wilson is NOT a long-term solution. He's not even a 2-3 week solution. There's a reason he's 28 and he's been with 8 major league teams already, and can't stick with any of them.

If we're going to make a move at 3B, make a big one. I'd give Milwaukee a call and see what they want for Aramis Ramirez. This is the last year of his career, so the price can't be too steep.

EDIT: Scratch that last part. I just saw what Ramirez is doing this year. He's making Nick C. look like George Brett right now. I'll pass. But make a big move at 3B, all the same.

One more thing, only because at this point I'm throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks:

Corey Jones is hitting .291 with a .797 OPS in Toledo, after being bumped up from Erie. But he's 27. You're not exactly a prospect at 27 when you're just now going from AA to AAA.

isn't any kind of long-term solution at 3B, but yeah, I'd bring him up and send Castellanos down at this point.  We're getting nothing at all from him, hitting just .223 and striking out way too much, and he's a mediocre 3rd-sacker defensively.  See if a trip to the minors can fix whatever he's doing wrong with the bat.

Jones has never hit more than 6 HR's per season and usually about half that total, but he's going to at least make contact and can spray the ball.  Plus infielder, too, so we get rid of the weak link defensively.

The only other solution that might work (but not long-term, either) would be to move Miggy to part-time duty at 3rd.  But I'd hate to take that risk unless there's absolutely no other possible moves that can solve the 3rd base problem.

I was thinking Beltre might be available if Texas continued to flounder. Doubt they will be selling now.

Tough watching Nick C these days.

Game ending double play was the perfect example of that. JD should have been looking for a pitch up to at least get the tying run in, instead he stupidly swings at a pitch low in the zone on the very first pitch.  He should have elimated the low pitch as something he would  not swing at before even going to the plate.

There is a reason why this team is somehow is at the top in OBP( which actually could be higher if they took more walks) and BA, but in the bottom half of the AL in runs scored. They are just awful at using their heads at the plate, with regards to situational hitting. The added speed is going to waste, because they don't do the little things to scratch out runs.

Hate to say it, but barring a move or two at the deadline and V-Mart turning into last year's version, the window might have already closed.

Glad to see JV have a solid outing. I'd give him a B+. The curve looked better than last year, and he got a lot of lefties out, something he seemed incapable of last year.

Miggy is heating up again. Another 3 hit day. Its amazing what he is doing vs the Tribe this year. I like watching him climb the career lists in hits, rbis, and home runs. He just tied McGuire for RBIs (who cares), but next year figures to be pretty remarkable for home run milestones. He's going to be passing a big name every week.
