New Possible Michigan Football Rivalries

Submitted by helloheisman.com on

If Michigan were to ever drop Notre Dame from its schedule, what teams do you think we could replace them with that would instantly create a heated rivalry (given that we play a home and home with them every year for 30-odd years)?

Off the top of my head, I think a new series with:

Mich v Southern Cal
Mich v Tennessee
Mich v West Virginia

would without a doubt re-create the OOC rivalry atmosphere with Notre Dame. Not saying any of this is likely, just fun to think about which matchups that would bring bad blood between the schools.

i think a high profile opponent in a centrally located neutral site would be great, sort of like ND and WSU this year, but not in san antonio. use the trips as recruiting showcases in various regions.

for example
UM vs Georgia in nashville
UM vs LSU in st louis
UM vs miami in atlanta
UM vs pitt in cleveland

Here's how I think our OOC should look:

1. Directional Michigan
2. 1-AA Baby Seal/Other MAC team
3. Notre Dame
4. Rotating big name school

Have ND and the big name home/away schedules switched (so when we go to ND, the big name is at home and vice versa). Now, if the Big 10 adds a 9th conference game, drop the 1-AA clubbing. Keep one of the directional schools there to keep it loyal to the state. This schedule always gives us 7 home games, too.

This seems to have turned into a thread about what nice OOC matchups we could come with. But the OP was asking what other team might make for a good rivalry. I gotta go with West Virginia on that one. Assuming a long successful RR tenure at Michigan, a UM/WVU rivalry could be reeeeeal ugly.
