Great idea to honor someone with roots on both sides of the bridge.
Hockeytown....
Will definitely be taking this going forward... also quite literally, thanks Canada.
Made the mistake of listening to 97.1 on the way home (podcast wouldn't download) and some jackass didn't know who Gordie Howe was. I mean, besides hockey, have you not seen Ferris Bueller's Day Off?
Hurray this may mean I don't have to cross at Sarnia anymore.
"How are you getting to Canada?"
"Yes, that's right, Howe."
"No, how?"
"Yes, Howe."
"That's my question, how?"
'Yes, that's right - Howe."
Love the idea, though we may want to call it "The Gordie."
Every Detroiter/Sports fan knows that the only person that this bridge should be named after is Dan Orlovsky
Can Ann Arbor rename Main street Harbaugh avenue?
If we're renaming major Ann Arbor streets, I think State should be the first to go. More collateral damage, but still.
When it comes to something like a bridge, there probably aren't very many Detroit sports figures whose name could really grace it and do so well, but Gordie Howe is really one of those names that works for this, in my opinion. As a sidenote, we've actually been prepping our facilities for a long time for the US end of the bridge and will simply be waiting for the call to provide the plaza on our side with service whenever that happens.
So what do they call the tunnel? The Worm Tunnel?
Oh, not talking about anything directly attached to the bridge, just the electric distribution facilities near where the US approach will be. We invested in this long before the state or the federal goverment did. A semi-gift from a concerned utility.
You shouldnt sound so put out by Canada picking up the tab on this. The Chicago to Detroit to Toronto truck route is one of the busiest in the world and Ontarios, and therefore Canadas, economy depends heavily on this
Huh? Canada paid for the bridge and is being reimbursed by the US through tolls.
I think they started construction on the infrastructure on the Canadian side 3 or 4 years ago. I thought it was a brave move given that final approvals didn't seem ready on the Michigan side until the last possible minute.
Love Gordie Howe.
Love that there will be a non-Moroun owned bridge.
Don't love that society has become just one big celebrity love fest. Does having been one of the best hockey players ever mean a bridge gets named after you? Now it does. Just as in England the way to become a Knight now is all about fame.
I thought Tecumseh would have been a great name to attach to the bridge, but I guess that this is something that will be popular amongst people, so yay for the blatant popularity move.
Too bad the new arena will likely be named something like "Little Ceasar's Hot & Ready Hockeytown Arena"
At least we haven't gotten to selling bridge names... yet.

How do you propose they knight people, if being famous (and typically contributing to the culture of England) isn't enough? Jousting tournaments? A knight-squiring merit system?

Mr. Hockey was born in Canada and played the majority of his historic hall of fame career in Detroit. He dominated a sport that both Michigan and Ontario hold dear. Holding most major records until a man they call the Great One came along.
He was married for 59 years and produced three children. Two of them played professional hockey, one of which became a hall of famer, and a third that's a radiologist. He's survived a fractured skull, skin cancer, a stroke, and so far dementia.
I've seen him at a couple games signing books and chattting with fans. My mother who was a nurse during one of his surgeries told him I was a hockey player and he gave her a signed picture to take home to me.
I think he's worthy of a bridge and maybe even a highway. I mean if they're going to call themselves Hockeytown they should probably honor Mr. Hockey.
Stick your elbow out the window when crossing the Howe bridge in honor/honour of Mr. Hockey!
and when you come around a corner on the bridge, you better keep your head up.
Looking onto Joe Louis Arena...awesome.
The Joe is not long for this world, unfortunately (or fortunately?).
Super name. Great tribute to a great Canadian who made a name for himself in the US. I hope like hell Gordie lives to see or visit the Inauguration of that bridge .
My uncle worked at Olympia Stadium years ago. After a game Gordie Howe came and talked with my family for a few minutes. Gordie Howe was wearing a suit and tie and a long overcoat. To me, he looked like the President of the United States.
Great News!
Now I hope that they design a great bridge. Something iconic that would be instantly recognized the world over. Something beautiful, not just functional.
Maybe make it look like it's being held up by hockey sticks or something?
It's definitely going to be either a suspension bridge or a cable-stay. Either way, the span is so large that there will be two towers, and no chance in hell any tower is in the Detroit River. A cable-stay would have to be taller, but I think they look better and you can do more unique designs with them. Plus then you're not building a copy of the Ambassador bridge just upstream.
I won't lie I was hoping for it to be called the biakabutuka bridge, but this is a solid second option
Great tribute to a good man and a true ambassador to the sport of hockey!
I like Gordie Howe.
