OT - If You Could Switch Professions, What Would it Be?
Mates,
We enjoyed a great topic earlier this week with the 'Roll Call'. So next question: If you could change occupations from what you do now to what you think you would like to do in a near-perfect world (no jobs available in the adult film industry, you rogues), what would that new occupation be? Extra credit given for humor, the 'why' of the new occupation, and if you are actually taking any steps toward this new job.
Happy weekend and go blue.
Nfl kicker
Seriously, college football official on the weekends. I get to keep my day job. Travel on the weekends and get to see and work some great games!
DING DING DING DING... Winner.
They have some serious pressure packed moments. If you miss a Super Bowl kick you might turn into a woman and change your name to Ray Finkle.

But everyone knows it was Dan Marino's fault... laces out
I'd be a bullpen catcher for any Major League team.
Id rather be a punter

This! No punter is cut for missing the game winning punt
I would either want to be Indiana Jones or Batman. I am taking steps towards making this switch. I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
i thought for sure you were going to answer 'meth cook' or 'tony montana', ala scarface.
Bullpen catcher. Play catch all day, eat seeds and watch some baseball.

I was going to say the exact same thing but then I considered wage and can't imagine those guys are making a ton. That's why I went with situational lefty. Same deal but get paid more and only have to work now and then for short periods of time
like Zumaya before he blew up his arm. . . .
Not to mention wear and tear on knees.
My first little league coach is currently a bullpen catcher for the Houston Astros. He's also the brother of Omar Vizquel. I still talk to him from time to time and he's definitely living the life. Travels with the team, gets to the see the world, and paid to watch baseball. I'm jealous.
A situational left handed reliever. Get to go to the ballpark everyday and hang out in the bullpen all game (those guys always seem to be having a good time).
a LOOGY
apologies for duplicate
You dream of being Phil Coke?
Dentist or pharmacist. Good hours, can work anywhere, can have your own practice, and pretty high pay without the rigors of being a full M.D. That said, I'm pretty happy being an engineer.

As a pharmacist, I would choose dentist. Higher pay more flexibility. Actually a lot of the MDs I work with say they would choose to be dentists if they had to do it over as well.

As a dentist I can tell you the hours and pay are good but the work isn't easy........ That said I can't think of anything else I rather do.
As I dental student, I've heard that before. But I'm interested in oral surgery (where you go to medical school after dental school) so clearly I am not a good listener.
a radiologist? don't those doctors have it really good? pay, hours and lack of really having to deal with hmo's or patients? I dunno... just my perception.
Plus aren't there computer programs that read x-rays now?
Wouldn't you get nervous if a computer was able to do the same thing you do for a living but faster?
Rads sucks, they work a lot of hours and their future earnings are looking grim.
In terms of hours, the best are probably derm, ent, pathology, physiatry, psychiatry, and EM if you don't mind working 12 hour night shifts. But if you ask most doctors they'll tell you they'd rather be doing something else, even the ones in cushy specialties.
profession has a very high suicide rate, but don't let that get you down.
about the 'Painless Pole' is based on the fact that there exists a high suicide rate among dentists?
As a hospital pharmacist I definitely agree. It's a pretty good gig given the pay, hours, and flexibility. I wouldn't ever want to change professions but if I did I would pursue being a PGA pro
As a dentist, I can say its a good profession for the reasons you list. I do worry about the long term viability though. Dental "insurance" hasn't really changed in 40 years ie - the amount of money the insurance company will give a patient to have their work done in a year hasn't changed at all (usually a thousand bucks). Meanwhile, like all industries, the cost of doing business continues to rise - supplies, labor, and most importantly dental school. That's why you're seeing corporate dentistry - places like Aspen, Heartland, Great expressions - come to prominence. Dentists are basically being forced to work at these places because they graduate with $250k or more in debt and can't afford to buy a practice.
TL, DR - dentistry is a good profession but I think its glory days are behind it.
And if I could change professions - fantasy - PGA golfer - long career and get to play the best courses in the world and they all seem to have amazing wives. Realistic: Opthamologist, I had Lasix and that was the coolest thing ever, I'd love to do that for a living.
One of the good things (for now) is the ability to work as much as I want. You can work part time or 80 hours a week if you want.
financial sales right now and like it pretty well. There aren't any practical careers that I would immediately clamor for. However, since I don't have to be practical because this is the internet, I would love to work in the front office of an NBA team.
Basketball color announcer, with my own radio show. I love basketball, and often times (as is true of many of the people on here) I find myself saying the exact same things as the color guy before he says it.
Long snapper.

reclusive hermit in Utah canyon country; Tenured, skirt-chasing professor of art history with a drinking problem; architect; paleontologist; science fiction writer; wildlife biologist studying wolverines; talking head on TV political shows; President of the Federation of Planets; furniture designer; full-time grandfather
Isn't skirt chasing and having a drinking issue requirements to be a tenured Art History professor?
Or a Tenured Classics Prof? (Univ. of OKlahoma had one of these when i was there. he taught a great/easy 300lvl class.)
is your actual profession, isn't it?

First I want to become a detective in the Police force. Then I'd go undercover has a Kindergarten teacher to catch some scum killer. After I initially hate the kids I'm gonna realize I love teaching them. Maybe put on an Abraham Lincoln play and bring in my pet ferret for the class mascot... I don't know I'm just spit balling here but anyways, I'll find that scum stealing a kid and and shoot him on school property and because I loved teaching I just plan on becoming a permanent Kindergarten teacher. Lofty goals I know, but hey I'm a dreamer!

This sounds like a movie. Pitch it to paramount
He said "Mumble mumble mumble."
Which means "There'll be puppies too!"
Barry Allen, Fastest Man Alive. Just have to be struck by lightning and I'm set.
When I was a kid I wanted to be The Flash so bad that I told my pre-school teachers/babysitters that my name was Barry Allen. My mom came to pick me up and they had no clue which kid she was looking for.
Done this a bit.....started as a teacher, spent a few years as a journalist and now work in finance. If I had to change, again, it'd probably try to do something as an astronomer. I always enjoyed studying space.

Mythbuster. Those guys have the best jobs in the world.
Astrophysicist, photographer for models who actually dates them too, or analyst on college gameday.

I've asked myself this one before, and I have a hard time choosing between sports management and working in the front office of a team (MLB would be my top choice there, as I grew up playing baseball) or sports journalism, in which case I would want to cover college football and basketball primarily. Probably, if I had to choose between the two, it would be sports journalism just for the opportunity to see in person games that you'd only see on TV otherwise.
Event planning for sporting events. I'd like to use my MS degree at some point.
