Carvin Johnson Update

Submitted by TomVH on
I spoke with Carvin Johnson tonight. I don't have 200 words, so I just put it here. - He doesn't have an LSU offer yet. He said he's not really sure if they will offer, but if they do it won't change his commitment to Michigan. - He also said that he didn't think the fans liked him because he didn't have enough stars. That was pretty much verbatim, and unprovoked. I didn't mention it, or bring it up, he did. I hate to keep harping on that, but it's obviously starting to effect the recruits themselves, which is outrageous. I'm not saying it's only here, just relaying how he felt.

You need to cool it with the cursing. If the kid has thin skin and can't handle the fact that not everyone is in love with him then, sorry! Since you are so high on pleasing possible commits maybe you should get your knee pads out for them.

Don't want to upset a high schooler because he might not come to my favorite school and be an awesome football player. Stop giving these kids the power. Because an 18 year old can run fast and hit they deserve so much respect. This recruiting shit is out of control. I think that is what a REAL donkey is.

Hahaha. Believe it or not I am really excited for Carvin to come play at Michigan. I watched some of his film and think he will be good/great at UofM. However, I have a problem with the thought that if someone says something critical of a possible commit/commit that that will hinder there decision to attend that school. Fan bases are full of blatherskites (like the guy with the post above you). I don't advocate saying anything negative about a high schooler. That's about as immature as someone can be. As you can see I didn't say anything negative in any of my posts. I think it is fine to debate about a player but nothing too critical. Something saying how they suck bc of this or that is too much. I also don't think it's right to censor people because of the thought that it will impact a recruits decision. My point is is that it should be fine to debate about a recruit without being overly critical but to jump over the people that do that or the thought of someone debating a recruit is outlandish.

"Fan bases are full of blatherskites" Here here!+1 to you good sir. This is the first use of the term blatherskites I have seen on this blog. However I have to admit that I didn't read the rest of your post....blatherskites... that is so awesome! Fenton Crackshell would be so proud!

Dear MichMike86, From the sound of your posts, I would guess you're somewhere in the age range of 13-16 and your probably just a kid. This is the reason why I won't be an ass towards you. In general though, I would state that the world tends to be a better place when respect is given first and not by way of having to earn it before you give it. Try it sometime, it might really put a positive spin on life. Thanks

Yes, because him saying "shit" is so much worse than your graphic depiction of oral sex both in your post and implicit in your avatar every time you type in another inane little comment. The lack of self-awareness here is startling. *facepalm*

You objected to profanity, while having an avatar of Patrick Bateman commanding a prostitute to go down on another woman. That is idiocy, and hypocrisy. I'm not complaining about profanity - your avatar doesn't bother me. I'm pointing out the idiocy in having your avatar, then complaining about profanity. Please, tell me how my Castro avatar is germaine to this conversation at all. My interest is piqued.

I objected to the fact that he was calling me a little nancy bitch. When I said shit I was referring to the idea that puts recruits on a pedestal. My avatar is nothing more than something I found amusing. I'm not sure how a woman going down on another woman constitutes my use of the word shit. If I understand your post correctly you are saying that because my avatar depicts Patrick Bateman telling one girl to go down on another it means that it is ridiculous for me to object when someone calls me a bitch? Because of my avatar I cannot curse? Swing and a miss. I could see you argue if it were sexual in nature but not in this instance. From your inference I guess I can state that you are a communist because of your avatar? You enjoy holding people against their will? My avatar is not consequential to the content of my posts. Calling someone out whose avatar is a character from a book (then movie) is ridiculous when yours is depicting someone who is real and has perpitrated countless atrocities against his own people, controlled them and, during the cold war, helped the Russians. Hopefully that sufficed.

You clearly don't know as much about Castro as you think you do, but I'll leave that aside. (FWIW, "atrocities" are not really an apt description of anything the man has done) My main point of amusement, really, was that someone whose avatar says "Don't just stare at it, eat it", and concludes their post by suggesting that the target of his words blow another guy started his post by being offended at the use of the word "bitch".

Honestly this whole thing started because I am just sick of people preaching to the choir. If I would have taken the time to post while level headed I would have written something along the lines of Irish. He put it perfectly. I don't feel the need to discuss anything with Bouje anymore because most of his stuff is ridiculous from start to finish. Knee pads was probably too much but I was provoked and I made a mistake. The whole deal with my avatar is that I am a huge CB fan and this movie makes me laugh everytime. I just don't see how my avatar should influence your opinion on my content. I don't plan on changing it so if it does I guess I'll have to accept that. I just come here to discuss sports, Michigan football and everything else that is posted. A lot of the time I post nonsense just like everyone else. The thing that riled me up was how every post was exactly the same and they were all apologizing to CJ. I just couldn't comprehend how everyone could be such a kiss ass and wrote a rage filled post. This was way too long. Have a great day.

First of all, I do agree that Michigan fans should never boo a player. Booing a player is the same as booing the team and never therefore it simply should not happen. Secondly, nobody should complain about recruits (excluding situations in which the recruit gets in significant legal trouble), directly or indirectly. For the most part, nobody here has seen them play and have no real idea of how well they'll perform in college, so complaining about them is inane. Now, I will disagree with two of your points (a term I use loosely here): 1. It is perfectly OK to "bash" a Michigan player in certain situations, depending on how you define bash. If you define bash as simply spewing insults at specific players, then it is definitely not cool. However, if you would say that it is not OK to "bash" a player in the context of a general critique of their performance, then it is generally fine. Otherwise, why should we bother analyzing games at all. The line here is fuzzy, but there are definitely situations where it is legitimate to make note of why we lost, particularly when you consider that these players are (for the most part) on a full scholarship and are legally adults. 2. "Cheer for the team and don't be a negative nancy little bitch." I have major problems with this. As far as I'm concerned, it should never be required of a fan to be an optimist of their team's chances, so long as they cheer for the team anyway. This crosses into the territory in which the somewhat irritating 'blue kool-aid' analogies become legitimate.

I'm just getting extremely pissed off because there are some people on this site that no matter what RR does he's wrong. They are the people that can never be pleased. First they bitch that we aren't recruiting enough defensive players. Then we recruit defensive players then they bitch about the stars. The final stage of this process is when we start getting both numbers, stars and then they will say "we recruited over 25 guys what conference are we in now the SEC?" It is these people that I am sick and tired of with their incessant nagging, bitching and moaning at everything that happens with this program. But I agree they are just as annoying as the "kool-aid" drinkers which I'm sure many people associate me with.

MichMike86

December 9th, 2009 at 10:13 PM ^

You are a kool-aid drinker. Mostly because you quesitoned things before and the cool kids didn't like that so you became an incessant nag ever since. Not in any one of my posts did I jump over RR or Carvin. I didn't say anything negative about either one of them. When I read your posts the only thing I think of is BAHHHH. "Shepherd, come collect your stray sheep".

December 9th, 2009 at 10:19 PM ^

I've NEVER questioned ANYTHING about this staff before. I got neg-banged for: 1. The Myron Rolle fiasco 2. The M-Go-Points fiasco What exactly have I questioned? How did I change my posting so that the "cool kids would like me". You're an idiot show me a post where I've questioned RR because I've ALWAYS been on his bandwagon and will be until he gets his guys in that are juniors or seniors.

I show that I'm not a sheep and then you change your tune and decide that you don't like me because I'm annoying and it's all about me. You aren't on the debate team or anything are you? I really hope you're not a lawyer.

if you cant have an open and honest discussion about the trajectory of the michigan football program on a MICHIGAN blog without it turning into "omg you're a bandwagon fan", then where can you? i dont live in ann arbor anymore, am i going to talk to my gf about the pros and cons of going for it on 4th down with 10 minutes left against illinois? or bringing in denard on the final drive in the iowa game? and i think the majority of the bitching and incessant nagging is coming from you in regards to those who have the audacity to question anything about rich rod. and judging by the amount your posts get neged i dont think you're liked anymore than me.

Like it or not recruiting is a huge enterprise. Not sure if you knew that. These High School players (kids that are still in f'in High School!) are treated like royalty. Critiscism comes with the accolades. If a player is really sensitive then I suggest that they stay away from sport blogs because a lot of the people posting just spout mean spirited messages.

MichMike86

December 9th, 2009 at 10:18 PM ^

Please show me where I said something critical of Carvin. I would love to see it. No where did I say he lacks the ability to play at this level. I didn't say he shouldn't have been offered bc some website (where middle-aged guys go to to jerkoff about how many awesome players are coming to their school) didn't give him enough imaginary stars. Get over it.

"What are these kids going to do when they are boo'd" There is a huge contextual difference between idiots going all half baked and anonymously ripping on an 18 year old kid on the internet and people booing team performance on the field. The team gets the boos when they underperform on the field but not the individual player. It is ridiculous to make that comparison. As an aside, I have consistently felt that the chianti and brie crowd in my section boo too much (or at least grumble too much while they shake their canes in dismay). Thematically, it's the same thing as people online ripping 18 year olds, elite athletes no question, who *only* have three stars. Each group is working from a position of entitlement. It's weak.

that Michigan fans don't trust our coaches. If Les Miles offers, then this kid is a sleeper, but if "only" Michigan offers, it's because RR is "stupid" and we "made a mistake". The best thing Calvin Johnson could do is to come to Michigan and help turn this program around and let his playing to the talking for him. Anyway, welcome aboard Calvin Johnson! Go BLUE!

I'm excited to have Carvin and think he will be an awesome safety. If he comes here and shows what he can do, I'm sure the entire Michigan family will show him the love he deserves. I'll apologize on behalf of us fans, but hope he is able to use this as motivation like Mike Hart always did. Thanks for passing this along, Tom...we all needed to hear this.

Excited as well, not defending the naysayers, but I think that since it appears the schollie limitations have finally been solved, that many with start looking @ the glass 1/2 full instead of 1/2 empty with recruits that they may been "meh" on for whatever reason. Granted it's a privilege and not a right to play for UM, but many thanks to all in this years class for wanting to come and work their tails off to be a part of the solution with the many obstacles facing UM as of late.

It is fucking bullshit when we (I mean fans) whine about a kid getting recruited with low star ratings. They're not taking these kids the day before signing day - they are going out and proavctively getting them to commit months before signing day - this means that they (the coaching staff) are confident that, stars or no stars, these kids will be good enough to rebuild a championship program here. Dileo Williamson Kinard Johnson Vinopal These kids could be the best players in college football one day - the stars don't mean shit I can't wait to have you up here Carvin. Looking forward to the NOLA style here in Michigan

All I can say is, come to Michigan and you won't regret it. Ann Arbor is the best place in the world, and there is nothing in the entire cosmos as cool as wearing the winged helmet.

In the off chance that Carvin reads this, or that someone who knows Carvin reads this, I just want to say that we have a saying here at Michigan and I don't know if anybody's told Carvin about it yet. Bo said it. "Those who stay will be champions." It's not about winning titles, although that is wrapped up in the meaning - it's about the fact that things that you commit to will reward you in kind. Don't let people's hate get on you, Carvin. None of it matters - if you stay, you will be a champion. It's that simple.

#1 I would recommend he stays away from recruiting threads to begin with, the only opinions you need to be worried about Carvin are those of your family and coaching staffs. Fan bases will always find something to complain about no matter how mundane and pointless, don't let it influence your life. If you put in the time academically and on the football field good things are going to happen for you and UM football program as well. #2 This type of stuff makes me sick with message boards, so I say to you random negative commenter get off his back. Your complaining about an arbitrary star ratting? Think about what your doing when you give more credit to a website than your own coaching staff on what qualifies as a deserving football recruit.
