Had one the other day and it was amazing.

I stop at Busch's market to pick up some Faygo Rock N Rye. Always loved that unique taste. Inca Cola is fairly similar if you've ever had that. Third favorite is Hires Root Beer. Just picked some of that up last week, because I can't find it near where I live.

I purposely say pop whenever I leave MI just to see the reaction I get.
April 28th, 2015 at 10:44 AM ^
Yeah... I did that in Dallas at a Panera without thinking and the girl looked at me like I was crazy.
April 28th, 2015 at 11:13 AM ^
I did the same in southern Georgia. Girl behind the counter gave me a strange look.
April 28th, 2015 at 10:51 AM ^
from MI, I said pop and I got a lot of weird looks. I figured it was easier to switch to soda.

I worked with a guy in DC who kept saying "What's a pop?" All I could respond with was "What's a jackass?"

growing up in Pittsburgh in the 60s and 70s. I had no translation problems when it came to carbonated, non alchoholic, sweet beverages when I got to Ann Arbor.
Of course they made fun of my outrageous Burghish accent.
'Throwback' Pepsi (made with real sugar cane) is my favorite.

I'm with you. After living in Florida for the last 4 years and hearing everyone call it SODA, then moving back up here and hearing everyone call it POP, I have come to the conclusion that it should be SODA POP. I do think SODA has grown on me though.
As for my favorite? For a dark cola, I am a Coke fan. I am also a fan of Cream Soda.

Oooooh, SODA.
Any real gingery ginger ale is good. Also a fan of stuff by Henry Weinhard's and Boylan's - birch beer, ginger beer, root beer...
For easy access, nothing beats an ice cold regular Coke.

Definitely my favorite soda/pop. My folks were from PA, so birch beer was a rare treat for us on summer vacations to visit the grandparents. Can you get the stuff in MI?

A pop what? Pop band? Definitely New Kids on the Block, before all this NKOTB nonsense. Also the Backstreet Boys, original version.

I lived in Huntsville, AL for 6 years and that Coke thing always got me. BTW I like Dr Pepper Coke.
I had friends who moved to Ala. and one year I visited them. They took me to lunch and when the waitress asked what I wanted to drink I said Coke. Well, when she asked me what kind of coke I wanted I happened to be looking at my friend and the grin on her face was amazing. She set me up. I ended up ordering a Coke coke.
Vernor's coke is my favorite, I knew better than to try and order that in Ala.

Coke is the nectar of the gods.

I generally avoid carbonated sugary beverages, but when I splurge its with a classic Coca Cola. Helps my hangovers, too.
April 28th, 2015 at 11:25 AM ^
in a glass bottle is the best Coke (other than Columbian).
I went down there on vacation a few years ago, and the fridge was stocked with it. I probably drank more coke in those 10 days than I did in the previous 10 years. Real sugar and the glass bottle really make all the difference.

Mexi-coke is the best. In California they have it at most grocery stores now.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:02 PM ^
It's becoming more widely available here too. I saw that Pepsi now has a cane sugar version, haven't noticed if Coke has followed suit.

If you like Vernors, next time you find yourself in Kentucky buy some Ale-8.
It's my favorite soda.

Soda or Pop? Discuss
I grew up saying pop, but after living in the south for a couple years, and now being in New York, I definitely prefer to say soda.
April 28th, 2015 at 10:44 AM ^
It's pop and will always be pop.

If you want to communicate with those outside of the Metro Detroit area, you need to learn that lingo changes, language is not universal. If you refuse to acknowledge those outside of your geographic area, well...you become sort of Boston-ish. They have a hard time recognizing the world outside the I-495 beltway. Don't be like that.

or so i learned years ago is what they call it out east. family moves in across the road and we invite them over to get to know them and they were very nice folks. they have kids (i was a kid then too) and they ask for 'tonic' - and you have to say that with a boston accent. well, my mom got them 'tonic', as in the kind you mix with gin. so we all learned a new word that day since like any self-respecting michigander we called it pop.
April 28th, 2015 at 10:53 AM ^
technically it's sodapop, so it all depends on how you like to shorten that word I suppose
