it could happen?

We normally don't do minute-by-minute updates on specific recruits, but when it's crunch time for a guy who might be the #1 player in the country that's an exception worth making. So: UCLA sources are reporting that Brown has dropped the Bruins and Scout's Evan Daniels says that his list of eight is now five:

The other teams cut are the two Georgia schools that seemed like courtesy listings for the locals.

In the wake of that news and Austin Hatch going on medical scholarship, Michigan has scored a bunch of Crystal Ball predictions. I wouldn't put too much stock into that, as Brown's recruitment has been extraordinarily tight-lipped, but it's better than the alternative. A staffer on 247's Kansas site thinks Kansas is all but out as well and that the three schools with a real shot are Cal, Michigan, and Kentucky.

I've been scouring the relevant message boards and Kentucky guys have not been particularly optimistic despite their recruiting proficiency… but again, nobody seems to have a feel for how this recruitment will go. After all, many thought UCLA was the leader.

The Hatch medical has no implications for Brown. The medical process was stated a while ago; it appears Brown still may not have made up his mind.

That's not necessarily true. If Brown has been favoring Michigan, he would have to wait to commit until Michigan found out about Austin's medical from the NCAA. It could still be coincidental timing of course. If they are connected, I'd expect Brown's commitment in the next day or so. Any longer wait and the less likely it looks.

But why announce the Hatch medical now unless you're pretty sure someone is coming (Brown or Williams)?  If we miss on both, we'd might as well just keep Hatch on an athletic scholarship, and that would be weird after yesterday's announcement.

I think another possibility is that they want to announce the Hatch thing now so that a commitment doesn't lead to a wave of "Brown/Williams forced out Austin Hatch" stories.

Lots of tea-leaf reading here.  The announcement was made as soon as the approval from the NCAA was received--as would be the norm--not related in any way to Brown.  The decision for Hatch to medically redshirt was also, by statement and all appearances, also unrelated to specific recruiting targets--though freeing up a scholarship generally was likely a consideration.

That's absolutely true, but even if Brown doesn't fall to Michigan is does sound like Williams from VCU is in play.  So either way, having that extra spot means Michigan has a better chance at landing a recruit than if they had sat on it for another year and Beilein had decided to stand pat.

chances. Kentucky is going to be young. They are talented of course but Michigan offers a better career launch platform in terms of experienced platform. Add Adidas and family in Michigan. Cal is led by a defensive minded coach. I have to believe Brown would lean toward a coach known as an offensive genius. And again, he'd be playing along side guys who know the system.

a chance to join a program with players ready to win. It's a chance to play for a coach that knows how to win. Brown said himself it's a chance to play for a coach who knows how to improve players games and work on what they need and to develop them for the NBA. And at Michigan he could be a life time legend if they win compared to one of many at Kentucky. This seems like a good fit. I think Beilein really has a good shot at landing him.

Wheeler high school in Georga just tweeted "After Brandon Ingrams commitment, gut feeling JB will commit in a week or so." So if this medical scholoriship hype is a thing and the tweet is true I'm liking Michigans chances with the moment the are getting!

For this reason, I think it hurts our chances.  He was watching to see where Ingram went.  Ingram wasn't being recruited by Michigan.  Now that Ingram went to Duke and not Kentucky, it may mean he is leaning towards Kentucky since their is another open spot.  I don't think Ingram going to Duke helps us.

I can't think of a bigger recruit unless you say McGary or GRIII. Can you guys think of any bigger recruit and you can't say Trey or Nik because they were not that coveted coming out of High School.

HYPOTHETICALLY!! And not to get hopes up, but if Brown were to commit, what does our starting 5 look like next year? Whose minutes does he eat up?

Starting 5 of Walton, Levert, Brown, Irvin, and Doyle.  It gets messy when trying to get all the bench guys some minutes.  Obviously Dawkins and MAAR deserve to play their share, and Spike of course if he doesn't redshirt.  Wagner will most likely play some.  Then what do you do with guys like Wilson, Donnal, and Chatman?  One of Wilson and Donnal would have to play to spell Doyle at the 5.

Then lots of quality depth coming off the bench.  With or without Brown, 2015/2016 is going to be a very fun season.

Even with Brown coming in, Dawkins may still be better. Dawkins was averaging close to 20 in his last 5 or 6 games and was shooting the three at Stauskas levels. I this team could be very special with the very deep bench. MAAR may not see the court much but he did a hell of a job last year.
