Carvin Johnson Update

Submitted by TomVH on

I spoke with Carvin Johnson tonight. I don't have 200 words, so I just put it here.

- He doesn't have an LSU offer yet. He said he's not really sure if they will offer, but if they do it won't change his commitment to Michigan.

- He also said that he didn't think the fans liked him because he didn't have enough stars. That was pretty much verbatim, and unprovoked. I didn't mention it, or bring it up, he did.

I hate to keep harping on that, but it's obviously starting to effect the recruits themselves, which is outrageous. I'm not saying it's only here, just relaying how he felt.

If we declare a moratorium on saying negative things about a recruit because of his low star rating, then shouldn't we also declare a moratorium on saying positive things about a recruit because of his 5-star/4-star rating?

"He's lightning fast" is the mirror image of "He's really slow." So we have three options as I see it:

a) Don't talk about recruits at all,
b) Talk about recruits fairly, whether the analysis is positive or negative, or
c) Heap praise upon every single recruit

(Notice that one of the options isn't "Call the recruit names" or say "He sucks and I hate him.")

I think b) is the most reasonable answer.

I feel like a broken record saying this, but "trust the coaches" is not an evaluative method. Our coaches obviously like all of our commits and coaches of other teams obviously like all of their commits. So if that's the only input we have where does that leave us?

This is an interesting thread I have come across. From watching his film Carvin looks to be a rare commodity in the Michigan family. He is a safety with good instincts and a willingness to be the hammer. Not every so called "sleeper" will turn into a Michigan great but the more talent we stock at each position the better chance we have of hitting paydirt.

We didn't mean to make you feel like that. Stick to Michigan, and once you get here, believe me, you won't be feeling disliked any longer. GO BLUE CARVIN!!!!

but I always thought that the general sentiment around here was that Carvin was a good pickup and that we completely fleeced LSU. I really can't remember a whole lot of posters, outside of a few, that were upset about his lack of stars so I was a little surprised that he feels this way.

Either way, Carvin, please don't bail for LSU.

Carvin has been upgraded on Rivals to the #33 safety in the country. Scout still has him as number #77. The geniuses at ESPN still have no evaluation.

Can't wait for him to get to A2 and contribute.
