Suh named Heisman finalist!

Submitted by MichMike86 on
It was just announced on ESPN. This guy deserves the invite. Maybe he can shock the World and win it. Besides Woodson I don't remember seeing another defensive player being invited to the ceremonies. EDIT: The other finalists are Toby Gerhart, Mark Ingram, Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow.

Very deserving. By the definition of the Heisman (the most outstanding player in college football) he should win it. But if Gerhart wins I'm still cool with that.

The fact that Tebow got invited over Spiller is pure grade horseshit. One of those players was electrifying this year, the other got invited because people remember him being electrifying. That being said, Ingram probably wins, despite Suh and Gerhart having better seasons. Will Ingram be the first Heisman winner from the state of Michigan?

He's an exciting player, but I think his Heisman candidacy was a media construction. He only rushed for 100 yards or more four times all year and he plays for a 5 loss team. I know he was injured some, but he really just didn't have the numbers. I think with the other running backs who were more consistent this year, Spiller just didn't have a chance. And I know that he has a lot of return yards, etc. but in that case, I would argue Gilyard deserves consideration more as an all purpose player. He had some of his biggest plays at the most important moments for UC this year, and had more all purpose yards than Spiller. BG for Heisman, by the way. Wait, what? He didn't get invited?

Good for him, he's one heckova football player. I for one would love to see another defensive player win it. I just hope the voters put politics and bias aside and vote for the best college football player, not just the most popular.

Christ, they couldn't stand not inviting Tebow, could they? As opposed to 2008 Graham Harrell, with more touchdowns, more yards, and only one loss, who had to watch on TV?

I'm sorry Kellen Moore, I guess a 39-3 touchdown interception ratio on an undefeated team doesn't get what it used to. Not even an invitation. The CJ Spiller snub is big too. I think Suh probably deserves it, but Ingram will win it. I like all of the top three so I don't really mind if any of them wins. Here's for Suh in a Lions jersey next year!!

While I understand the horribulousness of the lions line. I have to wonder if they would be better off with an awesome DT or someone on the OL who could possibly prevent Stafford from being killed. The OL is possibly even worse than the DL. Which is impressive. I guess is Suh is available, they have to take him, but if he's not, I would like to see them trade down and get more relatively high picks and try to rebuild the lines this year like they were supposed to last year. Not sure I wouldn't rather see them take several very good O/DL players instead of one great one.

As a Texas fan, I want Colt to win it. But he deserved it after last year's season, not after this year's season. Suh is a great player, but there were games this year where he just disappeared. He looked terrible against Texas Tech, where he had the most opportunities for sacks. Tebow shouldn't have been invited. I don't think anyone considers him a real candidate this year. CJ Spiller almost single-handedly willed his team to victory in the ACC title game. He deserved to cry after his effort, not Tebow. Ingram disappeared in Alabama's biggest rivalry game of the year, and my dislike for everything Saban related creeps in here. (One a side note: In the Iron Bowl, Alabama looked like Texas did against Nebraska, yet no one is calling for TCU to jump them). This award, if it truly is the most outstanding player, should go to Gerhart, even though I want Colt to win it. He played the best in his biggest games (Notre Dame, USC, Oregon).

As much as I love B. Graham, There is no force in the college game equvilant to Suh. Have you seen Suh's stats this season? 82(!) tackles, 22 TFL, 12 sacks, 10 PBU, 3 blocked kicks, and a pick. BG only wins in the TFL department, even though DEs tend to have better numbers. So, Suh has the sack and TFL numbers of a freakish DE (a la BG), makes tackles at the rate of a LB, and breaks up passes with the regularity of a DB. And he has a pick and 3 blocked kicks to boot. Keep in mind this guy is a 300lb DEFENSIVE TACKLE. Those would be gaudy numbers for an MLB, a position where it not unheard of to put up gaudy numbers. Those numbers are literally out of this world for a DT. BG is a freak, but Suh is superhuman GIVE IT TO SUH!

While I don't disagree that Suh is more dominant than BG, in fairness, his sack numbers were helped out by the fact that he has a good line around him and a secondary which could cover...BG's sack numbers were definitely cut down by the inability of the young CB's and safeties to provide coverage and time for BG to make his move

Suh or Gerhart probably deserve it most. Ingram couldn't have stank up the Auburn game, one they nearly lost, more if he had taken a huge dump on the field. McCoy played poorly in their conference championship game, largely because he was running for his life from Suh on many plays. Ingram playing an excellent game in the SEC Championship helps, but I can't help but think of that horrid performance in the Auburn game where he was basically benched for his backup. On the other hand, Gerhart came up big in their biggest games, and Suh was simply a beast all year, coming up with one of the most dominant games from a defensive player I've ever seen in the conference championship.

Colt 'The Answer' McCoy will walk away with the trophy. The QB with the most wins in the history of the game on an undefeated team playing for the NC is a valuable player.

Solo ast total tfl-yards sacks(#)-yards Int Br-up QBH FF BL A 50 32 82 23 92 12 77 1 10 24 1 3 B 42 22 64 26 127 10.5 98 0 2 1 2 2 The big things that are different is total tackles tackles for loss yardage sack yardage, break-ups and QB hurries (but I'm pretty sure that one is incorrect). With this information guess which one is a Heisman candidate and which one didn't even win DPOTY in his conference. (Also keep in mind that one player played 12 games and one player played 13 games).

I could be wrong on this if I'm forgetting others, but the last time a defensive player was invited was in 1991 when Steve Emtman from UW was named a finalist and finished 4th. 1991 was of course the year Desmond won it. Kinda cool trivia.

Warren Sapp was invited in 1994. I remember him saying in his interview that he stood no chance of winning because, referring to the ball, "you've got to be totin' it." I liked that. I remembered that when Woodson won a few years later; he at least occasionally toted the ball.

Take away McCoy and Tebow, who have not had Heisman calibur seasons, and invite Spiller and Kellen Moore. My vote: 1) Suh 2) Gerhardt 3) Moore 4) Spiller 5) Ingram

That's cool, but he most likely will finish 4th or 5th. For some crazy reason, Heisman voters are allowed to cast ballots as early as the first week of November, so a lot of them were probably already cast before his monster performance on Saturday.
