Hopefully this motivates the team to do well in the regular season so they do not have to win the B1G Tournament to get in.

They could do that, as you mention, and indeed Red himself has said in interviews that if he ever felt he was in the way of this team succeeding, he would graciously step aside. At this point, of course, with one year left on his present contract and retirement looming more than likely after that, it is probably safe to assume that his statement means he'll take one more crack at this or has been cleared to do so. It's hard to imagine a scenario where Hackett would do anything.

I agree, and think there's a very small chance of that happening. However, it is silly to post something saying that Red is coming back for his final year if it's not assured.
It's not like they would be firing him, but he could always be persuaded to retire a bit early.
but the season is over and Red said he's coming back. That news puts to rest some speculation. It's definitely not silly to post that he is coming back when it's now very much a long shot that he won't.
I didn't think there was any chance Hackett was going to push him out before his contract ended. But if that was his intention, he would have spoken to Red right away, not wait for him to make that statement to the media..
You are projecting a couple things that certainly may not be true.

4 straight years of missing the NCAAs?
He struck me as a 4 year guy for sure. Though it might be completely exhausting to be the captain of a team failing to meet expectations year after year. Might feel like he's been here a decade already
He has played three years and is a 4th round draft pick, not high, but not too low and his buddy Trouba is already there.
Does Andrew want to graduate for Red's last year and lead a potentially highly skilled team, or turn pro with only having one GLI banner on his resume at Michigan? He is a World Jr. alum and some NHL teams get itchy after three years for their prospects. It will be up to him to return. His play plateaued this year, but would like to see him center the first line next year.
So I guess Red's talk of stepping down if he didn't feel like he was leading the team well was just talk...or Red still believes he's doing a fine job

He resurrected the program and that's all he's known for over 30 years. I'm sure he enjoys recruiting, molding players, coaching, skating, teaching. It can't be easy to walk away from your passion and go sit on your couch.
It's not necessarily that, as much as that every year since the 1998 championship has had some element of "this is the year they actually string it together and do it again." Red, more than anyone else, is chasing that dragon. And the farther we get from those 90s teams, the less likely it seems we get there again--2011 and all.
Honestly, when you look at the rosters Red has been playing with since then, it's absolutely astounding Michigan has only made the championship game once. Once. And that was an unexpected dream run. Just think about that. No one has done less with more than Red Berenson at Michigan since the last time we won a championship, sorry to say.
