META (world peace)- MGoBlog Android app
Long time poster, first time thread starter.
Seeing the recent post on the iphone issues sadly reminded me that the Android version of the MGoBlog app is still broken. At first I thought it was just me, but when I went to complain post about not being able to post from the app on anything other than wi-fi I was reminded that I'm not alone.
I'm fairly tech savvy, but not so much when it comes to apps so I was wondering if any of my fellow MGoBloggers might be and would be interested in developing a fix or even possible alternative like the IOS MGoBlog HD app.
My apologies if this is an overall minor issue, but I figured with the offseason in full swing now was as good a time as any to bring it up. Thanks for reading. I'll hang up and listen.
TL;DR--->MGoAndroid App wont work unless on wi-fi. Can it be fixed?
EDIT: Updated title

I never had that problem, but I did delete the app because I was getting airpush.

Here's the link to Google Play, in the event you want to e-mail the developer - LINK
According to this, the last update was in April 2013, so I wonder if it is even being supported anymore, if that's accurate. I know the developer occasionally posts on the board, so perhaps he sees this and can provide some more information.

I seem to remember a post a while back that mentione he was no longer supporting it. My MGoSearch skills have failed to find said post though.

does anyone know how to prevent pages and pages of garbage text from being shown in the app? I think these are images that aren't being converted correctly, but not sure
March 20th, 2015 at 11:16 AM ^
Yes, those are images. I've noticed that too, and it doesn't happen for every one, but I don't think there's any way to avoid it.
March 20th, 2015 at 11:46 AM ^
It happens on mine, it would be nice for that bug to be fixed and to have videos load like in the apple app.
March 20th, 2015 at 11:19 AM ^
I think the problem might be on your end, not the app.
My HTC One would not allow commenting on or off WiFi, I always got the message "MGOBLOG has stopped working." But I now have a Nexus 6 and it works fine all around. Most likely on your end.
5.0.1

I use the Android app all the time without issue, on both WiFi and cellular. Really, the only complaint I have is that you can't start a new thread from the app.
I have Nexus 5 running stock Lollipop 5.1, though it's worked well for me on every OS version I've had on the phone.
Btw, the only time the app crashes for me is when I try to open a thread that has been deleted by a mod. For some reason, not all threads and comments that get removed by a mod get removed on the app. Other than that, I am able to read and reply to posts without issue.
March 20th, 2015 at 11:32 AM ^
I'm running it on a stock HTC one M8 with 4.4.4.
March 20th, 2015 at 11:49 AM ^
Same here. Works totally fine. Some photos and videos on the front page don't load. It crashes if I access a thread that has been removed by mods. Some, but not all, photos show a bunch of garbled text instead. Perhaps if they're embedded? Because links to photos and gifs seem fine.
Actually one of the most annoying things (not that I'm complaining about a free app) is that the page refreshes and takes me to the top if it turns from horizontal to vertical or vice versa. Usually that's not a problem but it gets annoying sometimes if I tilt a bit reading a UFR, which has a ton of content of course, and I have to scroll back down everything. It also refreshes like that if I turn off the screen and put it in my pocket and it gets turned.

any comment longer than three sentences never posts.

Software Engineer here, and I'd be willing to take a stab at patching the bugs. Would be up to the original dev though to share the source code with me.
March 20th, 2015 at 11:36 AM ^
Actually, it looks like it is open source and on GitHub. I'll see what I can do
March 20th, 2015 at 12:09 PM ^
This would be fantastic. I've got experience as a software BA, so if you want another set of eyes for testing/feedback, I'd be happy to assist. I'm also in a lull at my current job, so I've got time on my hands.
Absolutely. Given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow.
Cool. Feel free to drop me an email at matthewdpretty[at]gmail[dot]com.

You sir are an MGoScholar and a gentleman.

Not sure why it would matter whether you connect your device to the internet from wifi or a carrier. A connection is a connection. Unless your carrier plan doesn't include data.
Who is your carrier, what data network does your device connect to (2G, 3G, 4G, LTE) and what happens when you try to connect?
March 20th, 2015 at 11:41 AM ^
There are some settings that restrict data usage when not on wifi that might screw with the app.
March 20th, 2015 at 11:52 AM ^
I have an unlimited Data plan with AT&T and get full LTE signal. I travel some times for my job and it's the same issue regardless of location.
March 20th, 2015 at 12:44 PM ^
Odd. Personally have never had an issue whatsoever and have 4.4.4, LTE, on T-Mo, Note Edge. What exactly happens when you open the app?
March 20th, 2015 at 12:46 PM ^
I also have T-Mobile. Maybe John Legere is a Michigan fan and has hijacked the app to only work on T-Mobile's network!
I work with JL. Not daily, but meet with him from time to time. If he's a UM fan he hides it well.... However, his predecessor, Philip Humm, was a UM grad. I did talk UM football with him in the past. We actually have a pretty good sized base of UM alum in T-Mo leadership. We circulate e-mails about UM football and watch together sometimes.
Is he as crazy and eccentric in real life as his public persona makes him out to be? And let me just say that I love T-Mobile and have been an extremely happy customer since I switched from Verizon in 2013...but I have no idea how you guys stay in business.
That persona is 100% genuine. That's him. Thank you very much for your business - greatly appreciated and hope we keep it for a long, long time!!

The app opens and displays threads/text fine, but when I go to post and/or log in it says "login failed".
March 20th, 2015 at 12:58 PM ^
OK, dumb question, I know, but are you positive that you're entering the correct password? Assuming you are, I'd try a couple things:
- Log onto the desktop site and change your password there, then try to log in to the mobile app with the new password.
- If that fails, uninstall then reinstall the app.
If it still fails after trying both of those things, I'm not sure what else you could try. I've been able to log in and post without issue.
Password is 100% accurate. I even wrote it down and had the wife type it in. She got the same result. At this point I'm positive it's not just me/my device as others have chimed in.

Come on dude. You can't be so helpless. You're Powdered Toast Man!
March 20th, 2015 at 12:06 PM ^
Not even the magical powers of Toast can fix everything.
March 20th, 2015 at 11:48 AM ^
fixes things, it would be nice to vote on the Android app too.
March 20th, 2015 at 11:51 AM ^
Ah yes. Forgot about that. Also can't see upvotes and downvotes each post has gotten already.
March 20th, 2015 at 12:08 PM ^
If it can be done easily, then sure. Not at the top of my priority list though.
Can't be easily done, unfortunately.
March 20th, 2015 at 12:13 PM ^
The voting feature is a Drupal mod, and the app doesn't use Drupal.
March 20th, 2015 at 12:05 PM ^
would be much appreciated.
March 20th, 2015 at 12:28 PM ^
You put OT -- to be fair I don't think this could really be more ON TOPIC. But yeah, I agree. I don't even use the app anymore. I view it through the browser when I'm on my phone.
March 20th, 2015 at 12:42 PM ^
If we're going to be technical, it should actually be META.
March 20th, 2015 at 12:51 PM ^
I thought about doing this initially, but due to it being my first thread I held back. I've updated per your input.

Came here to post this. Using an HTC One M8 (and it was the same on the M7) comments and articles often won't load, just get a blank white page. Also some/most images don't load in articles or diaries. Youtube clips have really never would but this day in age there's really no reason they shouldn't.
I'd totally pay for a functional version of this app.
