OT: Philadelphia Phillies lose to Division 2 school
Let's all take a moment to laugh at the Phillies. They lost 6-2 to the University of Tampa, a division 2 school.

Hopefully the Phillies don't hire Dave Brandon. If they do, he'll put the University of Tampa on the schedule again next year.
Caveats about us not playing our best lineup or best pitchers aside, I DESPISE Ruben Amaro, Jr. As a Philadelphia fan, I refuse to support the Phils until they get competent ownership / management.
This team treats analytics like they are some sort of evil sorcery, and it shows.
I'm with you. Amaro Jr. threw the future away when he just HAD to get Halladay and trade our entire farm system away in the span of 2 seasons. Phillies' farm system was one of the best in the MLB.
part is the score. 6-2. They just got disposed of with relative ease.
It was 2-2 late before one swing decided the final score. Not exactly a 4 run blowout as it may seem.
...the hot takes on Phildelphia sports radio might be visualized (and sound) a little like this:
Knowing Philly fans, my guess is there is more frustrated rage than bewildered resignation.
Does it matter? Obviously it wasn't their full lineup, but it was still a group of pros playing against a Division 2 college.
53.5 wins for the Phillies this year?
None of their good players played...

I only see 3 guys who were on last years team...
http://espn.go.com/mlb/team/stats/batting/_/name/phi/philadelphia-phill…
C Hernandez, D Ruf and A Altherr and none were that good.
The pitcher that gave up 4 runs was a AA guy last year.
Three times in 10 or so years of MLB teams playing college teams. I'd love to know the roster that The Phillies put out there.
Funny, but they are not the real Phillies. Come on...
Plus, I have to believe that sometimes when these pro teams, or at least what they put on the field as a pro team for these exhibitions, the players don't really try that hard or let the college team win.
They should still be able to beat a D2 team with single A players.
Yes, though it isn't like MLB teams are necessarily trying to win during spring training. Some of this time is spent tweaking swings, working on mechanics, etc. If you are rusty AND trying to change muscle memory, you aren't going to play well.
That said, this is still embarrasing.

It's a pretty bad loss, but it does happen. This wasn't really "the Phillies" as much as it was a bunch of AA/AAA players with the Phillies' laundry on. Still shouldn't happen, but it's not like this was a pro squad going to war with Tampa.
More importantly, though, as Detroit finishes out their exhibition opener, it's time to repeat the time-honored tradition of Hall-of-Fame Broadcaster Ernie Harwell:
I was at work when the game started today and knew it wouldn't be broadcast. But over here in SW Michigan, pre-season radio coverage is spotty at best, so I had no idea when I'd first be able to listen to some Tiger Baseball. I'm assuming Tuesday's Tiger game will be on the radio in Detroit and at least some of the Tiger affiliates across Michigan?
And knowing that Dan Dickerson doesn't recite the "Voice of the Turtle" anyway, I figured, "why wait?!"
Spring can't get here soon enough!
Unfortunately I don't live in metro Detroit anymore so MLB.tv is my only source for Tigers TV/Radio coverage, but a quick google search shows me that it appears you guys have a decent number of games covered by Dickerson and Price this spring.

Tampa went 54-4 last year and is one of the best baseball programs in NCAA Division II. This year they are off to a great start too. I know it's still major league baseball against D2, but Tampa is pretty damn good at baseball. They have seven players in MLB...And more than 70 guys drafted.
sound like me in the immediate aftermath of The Horror before I just broke down and started crying.
Tino Martinez played there.
Need I remind anyone here of The Horror?
The Horror was a college team losing to another college team. This was a group of professional players losing to a college team.
Except that The Horror was a game that actually counted. The team had an incentive to win.
The Phillies will be horrible this season, but this game had less meaning than the NFL Preseason. There was nothing on the line beyond "let me see if I can get my swing to start feeling normal in a game situation."
In three years, this game won't even be a footnote.
I think it's time to retire the "Horror" nickname.
Yeah, it sucked. The blocked field goal happened directly in front of me. But after 7.5 years, it's time for people to not be so PTSD about it.
I thought the horror sucked but I honestly didn't think it would be as big of a thing as it became in the media. Virginia Tech lost to James Madison. A number of teams have lost to NDSU. Ole Miss lost to Jackson State. The only reason why the App State was bigger was because we're Michigan and have a bigger brand name. We finished 9-4 that year. Virginia Tech finished 11-3.
We also played in possibly the best game in years the season before against OSU. Can't say the same about VT or Arkansas when they lost to the Citadel in the early 90's. I don't see the harm in the "Horror" name since I believe we've all moved on from it. It's like the Colorado Hail Mary game. Some things we'll never get rid of.
Not good publicity, but this doesn't even remotely equate to the Horror.

the most likely sport for this kind of upset occur
Family friend of mine is the catcher for Tampa. He's gotta be pumped.
