Worst Calls Ever -- to Go Against MIchigan
Mine is the Charles White "fumble" TD . . . there are so many that could be listed. This one falls #10 on the ESPN List of Worst Calls Ever in All Sports

"foul" against Louisville is #2, then.

Let's not forget that Luke Hancock should have been fouled out late in that game, but his fifth foul was misattributed to someone else on Louisville.
February 26th, 2015 at 9:53 AM ^
I cannot watch this game again. So many calls wrong that it is anger intensifying.
The goal tending not called in the first half and the subsequent play that led to an early Burke foul.
Louisville thugging it up in the second half and most of it being let go.
Burke's clean block.
I don't believe in any conspiracy theories about a fixed game, what I do think is 1) The officials allowed Pitino to work them. Anyone watch the tape can see how much is in their ear throughout the game. 2) The Officials called a bad game.
February 26th, 2015 at 6:43 PM ^
Worst officiated game of all time, can roll the entire game up into one nominee for this list.
February 26th, 2015 at 9:57 AM ^
After Hancock was incorrectly allowed to stay in, he went on to drain another 3 and draw McGary's 4th foul, sending McGary to the bench. Huuuuuge error. It hurts to think about it.
February 26th, 2015 at 8:52 AM ^
That was right when we were making a second half run and it totally killed the momentum. I also felt like the whole game was slanted. Silva would drive uncontrollably and get bailed out with a call. Meanwhile Burke could not get an And 1 if his life depended on it.
February 26th, 2015 at 11:41 AM ^
You said it man. I feel like the refs sort of ruined what was becoming an amazing game. If that call doesnt go against Trey, who knows how the game turns out. Its definitely tight down the stretch and probably becomes one of the greatest championship games of all time.
February 26th, 2015 at 9:40 AM ^
the late hit in the 06 OSU game? That could've sent Michigan to a NC game.
February 26th, 2015 at 9:57 AM ^
was the correct call. The only horrible thing about that one was the timing of it.
February 26th, 2015 at 10:12 AM ^
Well..the Burke "foul" WAS in a NC game.
February 26th, 2015 at 10:36 AM ^
Don't blame the refs for making the correct call, blame Crable for being one of the biggest numbskulls to ever suit up for us. Blocked field goal at the end of the App St. Horror was also his fault, rumors were he was smoking weed pre-game.
February 26th, 2015 at 11:22 AM ^
were these those stupid ace williams rumors, or from an actual reputable source?
February 26th, 2015 at 1:48 PM ^
Crable doesn't deserve to be shit on years later for two mental mistakes and unsubstantiated rumours. He came from a tough background, was a hell of a player, and doesn't deserve his own fan base treating him like this.
February 26th, 2015 at 3:17 PM ^
I thought the rumor was that the whole team was smoking weed pre-game. That's the only way that outcome makes sense to me. Add in some of the rumors about the early-tourney losses in the Frieder era, and I'd say weed cost us a lot more than just one season of Mitch McGary.
February 26th, 2015 at 3:25 PM ^
The rumor was that a bunch of players were partying the night before the game, which is hard to square with the fact that the team stays at the Campus Inn on Friday nights and there is a bed check.
Really, the outcome wasn't that inexplicable. Appalachian State was a pretty good team (two-time defending I-AA national champs) that was capable of scoring a lot of points. They weren't that good defensively but Henne was a bit off-target, Hart missed part of the game with an injury and our placekicker missed two field goals. It was enough for them to escape with a two-point win.
.
February 27th, 2015 at 1:35 PM ^
No no no. The rumor was that the team was out partying every night during welcome week Aug 27 - 31, 2007. So they had a really bad week of practice in preparation for a good team. I know because every party I went to that week had multiple football players of all classes.
February 26th, 2015 at 11:08 AM ^
But Crable's hit was illegal. It was a bad call in that it hurt Michigan, but it was the correct one to be made.
February 26th, 2015 at 1:11 PM ^
Carr's vanilla play calling in the final minutes of the game in 06 is what killed that.
February 26th, 2015 at 10:25 AM ^
I have never been angrier at the sport of basketball than at that moment.
February 26th, 2015 at 8:22 AM ^
I have the picture on my other computer and when it scrolls the photos -- that is one of them. Wow! Bad Call!

The 1990 pass-interference non-call on MSU's Eddie Brown, who tackled Desmond Howard in the endzone after Des had him beat on a slant for the winning 2-pt conversion. Michigan went into the game ranked #1.
Story for you young'uns:
February 26th, 2015 at 8:40 AM ^
I remember Bob Griese saying "He grabbed him there, and held him there". One of the referees in that game was my p.e. teacher at Grand Rapids Junior College.
February 26th, 2015 at 8:43 AM ^
He was in a cafeteria the Monday morning following the game laughing about it. Anything he says in public contrary to that is a lie.

the absolute worst ever... cost us a national championship
February 26th, 2015 at 8:48 AM ^
I've mentioned this way too much on here, but Eddie Brown was one of my coaches for my little league football team in the mid/late 90's. Whenever we brought it up, he was very proud and open about the fact that he had tripped Desmond on purpose. Even he wasn't quite sure how it didn't get called.

What sucks is that it would have been an unbelievable finish without that uncalled foul. Stu Douglass inbounded that ball from halfcourt and threw a perfect pass. Beilein drew up a fantastic play there and it should've been rewarded.
February 27th, 2015 at 4:26 AM ^
It was a beautiful play. The foul call was obviously missed and it was a disgrace that on our home floor the ref could have missed it.
February 26th, 2015 at 9:16 AM ^
Especially since this was the only time I have ever been able to attend a U of M football game.
February 26th, 2015 at 11:48 AM ^
Yep, I'm going with this one. Keith Jackson has mentioned this as one the greatest games he ever announced.

February 26th, 2015 at 8:31 AM ^
a fake punt? I seem to remember a replay of the TE sealing perfectly, hands inside elbows out...
February 26th, 2015 at 10:44 AM ^
Yep. The Burke one was painful but these three are from the golden era of Michigan getting screwed by the refs.
February 26th, 2015 at 8:32 AM ^
February 26th, 2015 at 8:34 AM ^
after pass interference after pass interference. The refs completely dominated that game. And yet we were still in a position to PITCH THE BALL TO BREASTON YAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!

February 26th, 2015 at 8:39 AM ^
In rugby we call that "try eyes".
February 26th, 2015 at 12:53 PM ^
That officiating was so bad, even Herbstreit (calling the game as the color man) was laughing in disbelief and just saying "Sun Belt referees."
February 26th, 2015 at 8:33 AM ^
in the day for this thread. I'll have to check back in a few hours otherwise it will be a high blood pressure day for me.

The non PI (or holding) call in '90.
Spartan Bob with the clock in 2001.
February 26th, 2015 at 9:07 AM ^
It wasn't even Spartan Bob that pissed me off the most about that game; It was the official sprinting as fast as he possibly could to get the ball set for MSU for that last play. YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO SUDDENLY CHANGE YOUR PACE LIKE THAT JUST BECAUSE THE CLOCK IS WINDING DOWN!!! That also doesn't take into account the no call on the hold during that play either.
February 26th, 2015 at 12:33 PM ^
I'm with you. Seeing the ref hustle over to set the ball just incensed me, and it still shouldn't have mattered except for corrupt timekeepers.
If we don't get screwed over in 2001, that's a 9 year winning streak over Sparty instead of 6, oh man how sweet.
February 26th, 2015 at 12:54 PM ^
I was at the Spartan Bob game. There was no way he got that spike in one second. Ever since then, I have carefully watched how much time comes off on a typical spike play, and usually it is 2-3 seconds.
There was a terrible holding no call on that Duckett TD play if I remember correctly as well.
February 26th, 2015 at 1:53 PM ^
Yeah, IIRC it was on Larry Stevens, he got into the backfield cleanly and a Spartan just grabbed him and held on to block him. If it wasn't for the clock issue everyone would remember that play.
February 26th, 2015 at 2:26 PM ^
Pretty sure it was Shantee Orr. Had himself a game; I think he finished with something like 4 sacks. Just got absolutely tackled almost next to Smoker on the last play of the game. Worst officiated game in the history of sports.
