OT: 87th Academy Awards/Drinking Thread
Mrs. Gopoohgo has hijacked the "good" TV, Me and the dog are eating potato chips as I drink Union "Balt The More" Altbier 32 oz growler.

FWIW Thought "Boyhood" was innovative, but not the best movie I've seen (American Sniper).
Did not see "Birdman", but thought Benjamin Cumberbatch (Imitation Game) did the best job of movies I saw.

Great year for movies. I can't remember a year where the best movies were so loved by the Acadamy
1) Boyhood
2) Inherent Vice
3) Birdman
4)Grand Budapest Hotel
5) Nightcrawler
I dont like Jake Gylenhal but he was great in Nightcrawler, a true snub. And Inherent Vice should have got a best picture nom.

I think this year could be the fewest Best Picture nominees I've seen since I was old enough to go see non-kid movies. Was so busy I only managed to see Grand Budapest Hotel.

Although the film takes some significant liberties regarding Turing's life, I did enjoy "The Imitation Game" rather a lot. I have always been fascinated by the work that Turing did during the Second World War and what his work has meant to so many things that were inspired by his work (such as stored-program computers - he laid the theoretical foundation for the first one).

Awesome movie.
Imitation Game was terrific, but as I haven't seen the other films I cannot make a comparison. Cumberbatch is the best actor today in my opinion.

Yes, Boyhood took 12 years to film, which is, I guess, an innovative idea. But ignore that fact, and it's a terrible movie.

My wife had the same reaction when I told her the premise. Basically an "OK, that's cool I guess, but why?" reaction.

Wait... they actually filmed a movie for 12 years? Like they found some random kid and filmed his family for segments of time over 12 years until he graduated high school? That just sounds... frankly... pointless... which probably explains why the Academy would like something so insanely uhh... lacking any reason for being created I guess.

Why would you say it's pointless and lacking any reason? There's all kinds of coming of age movies out there. This is the only one where you get to see the physical growth of the actors over the course of the film's 12-year time period. That's pretty cool. It takes immense planning and masterful editing.
I haven't seen it yet, but I'm excited to see it.

But I was surprised at how engrossing it was. , and the kid they found as the boy was incredible (too many incredibles, sorry, it's late), gradually his hair would grow, gradually his voice would deepen, and all the way through he was believable and very, very good.
Other than that, I saw all the nominated films but American Sniper, and they were all good. The apples & oranges thing. So I watched Downton Abbey and watched the end of the other thing.
Agreed with all the acting awards. [Wait? Who was supporting actress? I was watching Downton then. And that was the only one I wasn't sure about. Good performances, but.... ]
Thought JK Simmons in Whiplash was a shoo-in as soon as I saw the first few minutes of the movie. Some people I told not to see it, because it would strike too close to home. That teacher/professor/coach who "teaches" via humiliation, plus a few extra doses of psychopathology. And realizing later he's the same guy who plays the nebbishy professor of that insurance company's mythical college... [People who've watched Oz were less surprised. I've only seen him play nice guys.] Hoped Julianne Moore would win, and she did. All the lead actors were terrific in terrific roles, but Eddie Redmayne had the good fortune to be given the role of a lifetime and the challenge of playing someone who's still alive, and believably showing the gradual changes as his disease takes over (not a spoiler) without it becoming grotesque or a joke. I really thought I was looking at Stephen Hawking. And now when I see Stephen Hawking I think he's an imposter.

I didn't see any of the Best Actress nominees' films, so I didn't have a dog in that fight. But I was pulling for Julianne Moore because of something my old boss told me about her. He's been covering the entertainment industry for over 25 years, including 10 years at one of Detroit's major papers, and has interviewed hundreds of celebs. He described Moore as one of the nicest, sweetest, friendliest people he's ever interviewed - the kind of woman who starts the interview with "Please call me Julie!", gives thoughtful answers, and laughs a lot.
So it was nice to see one of the good guys win.

was only really impressed with The Imitation Game, Whiplash, Boyhood, and Birdman. Thought Frank and Fury were overlooked.
Some great acting jobs this year though. Particularly Simmons, Redmayne, Cumberbatch, Arquette, Moore, and Keaton.

Of the nominees I've seen, Whiplash gets the nod from me. Maybe because I was more surprised than anything. Thought that was an awesome movie with two great performances. Birdman was cool but didn't grab me emotionally, American Sniper was good but was more impressed with Bradley Cooper than the movie a whole, Grand Budapest was really fun as well, and Theory of Everything was interesting but kinda slow.
Lego Movie is a HUGE snub, best "kid" movie in years. I thought Jake Gyllenhaal got snubbed big time as well - so creepy in Nightcrawler.

I forgave Margot Robbie for her horrible Brooklyn/Australian forced accent in Wolf of Wall Street b/c she showed her... great uhh... personality in that film...ya....

American Sniper stands alone as the best movie this year. Unfortunately I don't think the academy will give then the best picture. It's going to come between Boyhood and Birdman. I actually really like boyhood and thought boyhood was just ok. I also believe Bradley Cooper should get best actor, he dominated that role but Redmayne is gonna take that home.
I've seen Sniper and GBH. I liked Sniper as a piece of entertainment. It was great water-cooler talk. However, I wasn't really impressed with the film outside of that. Like Imitation, it took liberties with the truth. I thought the hand drill scene was lacking tact and a pure "look at this monster" troupe. I struggled with finding Kyle as a likable character - and that was before I learned of some of what's in his book. Cooper was very, very good. He's going to win Best Actor some day. But I thought the movie, as a whole, was one of Eastwood's lesser products of late.
I wonder if Sniper would have been better without the Moustafa invention. He was the cliche' bad guy. How would the film have been different if Kyle kept going back without having that bad guy to go get? I think it might have been a better introspection of his life and reasons for committing himself to the cause.
