No, I wasn't following the "official twitter" just like I don't buy genuine imitation leather. The general convention in men's sports is to refer to them by their last names. Yes, some "twitterers" and announcers refer to a few athletes by their first names, but that is mostly those that had unique names, like "Spike" and "Denard," but they are the exception. No one referred to "Taylor" (Lewan), "Jeremy" (Gallon), or "Mike" (I can name a bunch over the years, all were referred to by their last names). Just look at the box score anywhere. Just look at the articles published by professionals. There will be no "Spike," "Michael" "Sara" or "Betty Sue." MGoSoftball does a great service to this blog by reporting, in an incredibly timely manner, the results of games along with analysis and recruiting(!). I think this is an asset to this blog to the extent that I wished there were others that could lend their expertise in other, non-revenue sports like wrestling, gymnastics, golf and water polo. I definitely admit that I have learned some things and gained a greater appreciation about softball from MGoSoftball. I also appreciate all of the effort (an given the amount that he posts, this is not insignificant) that he takes to post on this blog. It is a better place for it. While very informative, I think that his posts would come across more professional (and he is a profession as he is a softball coach) if he would refer to the players by their last name. This is the accepted convention for men, and I see no reason why this should not be extended to the women who play sports as well. Can you give me one reason why this should not be so? While MGoSoftBall had made the case previously that the players, and the people in the stands (most of which are friends and family) cheer and refer to the softball players by their first name (which I find both appropriate and also the case with the mens sports as well), I just don't think it is in posting on a blog that has one of the largest readerships in the country, almost all of which do not have any kind of personal relationship with any player on any team of the University. Given the effort and quality of his reports, as well as my opinion that the women should be accorded the same respect and conventions that the men athletes are give, that he should give the women the same consideration. I think he would come across more professional. He makes a great contribution to the blog, but I just think his post and the blog would be better if the same convention that has been in place for the men was afforded the women.
