did you listen to the audio, the radio host asks "are you staying?" and Kelly responds "I am staying", there is so much wiggle room in there, honestly its pretty funny

Staying for what? Breakfast, Lunch, the rest of his life?, the rest of the week? till the ND press conference?

You're obviously right, but what is equally obvious is that virtually any statement contains the same wiggle room that existentialists love.

Even the statement "I will be coaching Cincinnati next year" could be impliedly qualified with "unless I'm not."

Ahhhh, gotta love coaching searches!

Irish - who do you want? Sorry if others have asked you, but I'd rather get a list of coaches you want rather than wade around in the message board trash on IrishEyes.

every name that has been sourced comes with pros and cons, there is no "home run" better than all the rest candidate so I just hope the AD gets the best candidate he can and I think he will.

Otherwise I am just enjoying the entertaining message boards with their "sources". All the fans who were all hyped up for the new coach are beginning to see all the cons of a coaching search which they seem to have not taken into account a few weeks ago.

Too reasonable. But fair enough.

I remember the same two years ago - every coach that was mentioned had a roughly 60/40 pro/con split among the online base. King Grobe (my favorite, thanks to gsimms): maximizes talent! creative offensive scheme! But can he reruit!... Brian Kelly: success at every level! Tressel-like lower division dominance! But is he shady! And he's never had prolonged success at a DI program! ... so on and so on.

I mean, at this time two years ago, Rich Rodriguez wasn't on anyone's list... because he seemed as improbable as Stoops or Meyer. That turned around in about 72 hours. Martin's process was effed up but (last two seasons' results notwithstanding) the result was still good (i.e., luck). But a good process can have a bad result as well. Hard to project a coach's success at a big time program, I guess.

If someone were crazy enough to review all the message boards and blogs and talk shows and total up all the people who claim to know "inside sources" at Notre Dame, the total would probably exceed by a factor of four the total number of people who work in any capacity at ND.

And yes, the same can be said for all the Michigan fans and their "inside sources," the number of which exceeds the population of Ann Arbor on some days.

"...I just hope the AD gets the best candidate he can, and I think he will."

Not much wiggle room there. Suffice it to say, whichever coach is chosen, if a better option were feasible then the AD would select that one. Well done, sir. You concise and rational potato-munching drunk, you!

This is what I hate about people second guessing coaches... A promotion is a promotion, I dont care if it is from HC at GVSU to CMU to Cinci to ND -or- if it is from Burger Flipper to the Drive Thru Register.

Why fault a successful person for navigating their career prospects. From GVSU to ND in 7 years sounds like he is doing things right.

I don't think anyone turns down ND to stay in the Big East, same way turning down Michigan to stay at Rutgers is a joke that the Universe makes you pay for...

all coaches lie if their team is doing well.

"i have removed my name from consideration" usually means. "i wanted the job but they really didn't want me so i'm removing my name so i'm not embarrassed later when i get turned down"

"i'm staying at(any school)" usually means. "why the hell are you asking me that. can't you see i'm trying to get my team ready for the biggest game of the season, and l'm gonna lie my ass off so the team stays focused and doesn't quit just because i'm gonna take the job after the game"

until the AD at ND holds a press conference introducing the new coach all names are probably still in play.

Coaches have changed their minds about this stuff before, but his radio statements were stronger than anything else he has said up to this point, and it would be really hard for him to downplay this.

Big East coach, in the BCS MNC title hunt, getting ready to play Pitt... with the chances increase of him bolting if his team loses to Pitt?

I'd say that his "staying" comment was pretty generic, as in, "As of now I'm staying... because ND hasn't made me an offer yet." That being said, I do hope he is telling the truth.

As for him being a habitual job changer, all up and coming coaches are "habitual job changers". Job change is inherent to the profession. If you plan on working your way up to the top, when the right opportunity knocks, you go. I'd say CMU to Cinci to ND would all be reasonable opportunities that an up and comer couldn't pass up. CMU is not in a position to contend with Cinci's potential, and likewise, Cinci doesn't really contend with ND's potential.

Let's just wait for Herbstreit's report on a BCS-bowl-bound coach that is in secret negotiations with a national powerhouse/dream job before we assume anything.....

When Kirk tells us... then we'll know

Does ND's A.D. sail?

I look at this situation and think back to the shit that Rodriguez got for leaving West Virginia after the 2007 season, because the nameless media idiots like to insinuate that he sought out the Michigan job instead of preparing for the Pitt game.

I guess what I'm saying is that if Kelly leaves for ND today, let the flaming begin. It probably won't, but it should.

There is no way Kelly could have answered this question any other way without a signed contract from ND in his hands.

Is there any truth to the rumor that if Kelly does go to ND, those who used to habitually spell Weis' name as "Weiss" will habitually spell Kelly's name as "Kelley?"
