OT: Lupe Fiasco's 'Tetsuo & Youth'

Submitted by Lupe Fiasco on

For those uninitiated, today a couple of albums were released; Joey Badda$$' 'B4.DA.$$' and Lupe Fiasco's 'Tetsuo & Youth'.

I got the leaked versions over the weekend and plan to go grab T&Y at Best Buy after class. T&Y is literally a work of art, the only album it reminds me of is MBDTF.

Is anyone else here excited, or plan to be buying a album today? And for those who are or already have it, you know you need a place to discuss and decipher it

I can honestly say that I have never heard of any of these people or their albums. It's like you aren't even speaking English to me. Man, I am old now.

I definitely wanna check that new Lupe too. I don't listen to as much new hip-hop as I used to, and most of the stuff I hear now I hate anyway. But besides these two albums, any thing else you recommend that you've enjoyed recently?

I'm not a huge Lupe Fiasco fan, but I'll give it a listen.

On the other hand, Joey Bada$$ has been one of my favorites since his 1999 album.

I've been listening to tracks on his new album for close to a month now since Pro Era Radio's soundcloud page posted some tracks.

No. 99 might be my favorite track on his album right now.

I hate to say it, but I am a little bit with Yostbound on this. The Cool is still my all-time favorite rap album (and Food & Liquor is amazing as well) and I still think Lupe puts on the best live show I have seen. Lasers was a bit of a disappointment and I barely listen to F&L 2 at all. He got a little too dark for me. But from what I have heard of T&Y so far, I think this could be a big comeback for him.

Amazon for the win.

Also I might be the only person under age 30 to still regularly buy CDs... Now unless it is a brand new album, you can find them on the web for cheaper than iTunes in many cases. Obviously spotify is awesome but it's surprising the stuff you can't find on there.

I'm under 30 and haven't bought an album in a long time. My friend on the other hand still likes to buy albums. He said he just likes having the actual CD and he likes album book/cover art and things of that nature.

The best is when he buys CD and it has no album book and it tells him to download one online.

I like having the artworks, lyrics and liner notes, and I prefer listening to full albums, so that's a big part of it. I would have jumped on the vinyl train earlier but it seems they pretty much stopped making them in the early 2000s which is kinda when I began building my collection. Obviously nothing beats an iPod or streaming for convenience but if you actually buy music (not something I always did) I prefer the physical copy.

I shall indeed be attempting to purchase an album today, but only the one that somehow managed to get broken in a scuffle whose circumstances and outcome may never be known. One of my kids managed to break one of the discs which comprise my copy of Kraftwerk's live album "Minimum-Maximum", so I shall be shopping for the replacement later. If you don't have kids yet, all I can say is consider keeping the CDs you may still have off of open tables.

What is this "buying albums" you speak of? In a world with services like Spotify and others, I can't even remember the last album that I bought.

I love hip hop and will check out these albums tho. Spotify FTW.

Solid process. I have two kids under the age of 3, so enjoying the quality of a vinyl is not an option for me now-a-days, so I only use Spotify. I would love to be able to enjoy a vinyl though.

I have two sonos speakers at home, so the integreation with Spotify is awesome. Plus the streaming on your mobile device is awesome for driving around. Not to mention the playlists. Its hard to go wrong with Spotify.

B4.DA.$$ and Tetsuo & Youth are both awesome. I have been waiting a while for these 2 albums to drop and neither has dissapointed me.

I have listened to the Joey Badass album about 5 times so far, and am making my first trek through Tetsuo & Youth.

So amped!

Lupe epitomizes hypocrisy. His debut album was one for the books, still always in my rotation. But everything he preached and said he would never do, he is not doing. Making crappy radio hits, feat artists that are absolutely total hacks. He's lost my respect as a real artist. I'm the opposite of excited for this album. Joey B on the other hand... Yes, please.

Making crappy radio hits was forced on him by Atlantic Records.  Even T&Y wasn't supposed to come out.  If Anonymous didn't threaten Atlantic Records another radio/poppy album like Lasers would have been released.  Lupe has released stuff like his first two albums you just have to search for it.

With that said I don't even see anything making him a hypocrite.  He doesn't "Dumb it Down" except for some songs on Lasers, but even that album has some pretty meaningful songs.  Listen to All Black Everything and State Run Radio and tell me that album is crappy radio hits.

Always got an ear out for a Luoe Fiasco release, but nothings come even remotely close to F&L. He's what hip hop needed. Unfortunately, that was 7 or 8 years ago...even then he was too much of a throw back for this new generation who don't want to have to "think" about words to a song. I'd like to see him work with underground artists though. Imagine him on Apollo Brown beats?!

I think Lupe is/was one of the greatest rappers of this era, which isn't saying much, but it's still something.  Food and Liquor was amazing, and The Cool was one of the best sophomore hip hop albums of all time (I'm not saying it competes with Late Registration, The Score or ATLiens, but it deserves to be in the same conversation as far as 2nd albums go).

However, while enjoyed a few songs off of Lasers and even more off of F&L II, they just weren't the same.  It's clear he's lost a little bit of the fire he had early and has become a bit disenfranchised with the whole game that is the music industry.  In other words, some of the stuff he's put out lately sounds a little forced.

I'm definitely going to listen to this album and enjoy a decent amount of the tracks (and I know it will be better than most stuff that gets put out this year), but I'm not expecting anything from here on out to ever replicate what he accomplished with songs like "Daydreamin" and "Hip-Hop Saved My Life."

He did an interview last night and admitted F&L2 was just an album to hand in so he could get off his contract, and that this is the proudest moment basically that he made T&Y and can release it to the public.

If this interview doesnt get you hyped that 'Lupe Back' then idk what could besides the album itself

I have a Premium Spotify account so I load up all the new releases that come out each Tuesday and listen to them all throughout the week. Looking forward to the Joey Badass album as 'Teach Me' is the track of the year so far. Also looking forward to the new Enter Shakari and marilyn Manson. Curious about the Lupe and the Sleater-Kinney comeback.

Didn't think i'd have much to add to this thread since i haven't bought a rap CD since the 90s, but did you just say that one of the songs was "the track of the year so far"???   Its January 20th.   Is that kind of like saying that a 20 yard pass on the first possesion is the "the play of the game so far"  even though there is 10 minutes left in the 1st quarter??

Joey Badass gives me hope. Shame that Capital Steez took his own life. He was gonna be good.

Good Kid, m.a.a.d. City has set the bar for me. Doubt anyone but Kendrick will meet it.

You have got to be freaking kidding me.  Good Kid Madd City was embarrassing.  This was supposed to ressurect the west, but the only track that reminded me of the west was the one with MC Eiht.  Otherwise it was a 3 listen and delete ablum, just like all of Kanye's wack ass catalogue.  Hip hop has some dope underground artists, but the late 80's- 94 years will never be duplicated.

Kanye's first three albums are far from wack, all are classics. Kendrick's first album was great.

Yeah, it doesn't stack up quite against 36 Chambers or Illmatic or Paul's Boutique or whatever. But do the Black Keys stack up against Led Zeppelin? I'd say no. Same thing. Most hip-hop today is kinda weak IMO but that might be the "get off my lawn" in me talking.
