Report: Jedd Fisch offered coaching position
Word from a Fox1 reporter suggest that Jedd Fisch, most recently the OC for the Jaguars (and OC at Miami (YTM)) has been offered the role of Passing Game Coordinator. Great hire if he does accept
College FB news -- I'm hearing ex-Jags OC Jedd Fisch will be offered the Pass Game Coordinator job at University of Michigan. @FOXSports1

Wow! But I still would have liked Turley.

no Doughtery?

that it means no Morton

"Pass Game Coordinator"
Anyone care to explain?
January 8th, 2015 at 1:40 PM ^
He is in charge of the passing game, calling passing plays, etc. It's fairly common to have this in several NCAA and nearly all NFL coordinators. I'd image Wheatley will handle the run game.

Brain fart with Drevno. He could also be in charge of the running game/OC and get input on passing from Fisch. Just depends on how they want to structure the offense.
January 8th, 2015 at 1:42 PM ^
You think Wheatley would do the run game and Drevno as overall OC? Potentially with Harbaugh as play caller? My head's spinning.

I believe it's more of an NFL thing. This way you have basically co-coordinator's that devise the gameplan each week and they also coach a position group which levels the responsibilities for a staff, so you could be looking at something like this:
HC - Harbaugh
QB - J. Dougherty
RB - Wheatley
RGC/OL - Drevno
PGC/TE - Jedd Fisch
WR - John Morton
DL - Mattison
DC/LB - Durkin
DB - Greg Jackson
ST - John Baxter
So, Manning may in fact be an odd man out, unless Wheatley doesn't come and Harbaugh looks to him. Obviously, that's all speculation based on me not knowing anything.
January 8th, 2015 at 1:47 PM ^
Still feel that Manning gets on the staff. I think either Fisch or Doughtery will get the last coaching spot for the offense, but not both.
January 8th, 2015 at 1:54 PM ^
I have the same feeling, but I think Morton may be the most tenuous of the prospective coaches so far. Perhaps Fisch or Dougherty get WR.

Manning would not replace Singletary. Singletary is not a coach like Manning is. He's an administrator. A very important administrator, and he probably has gameday responsibilities because we see him on the sidelines. But if Manning wants to be a head coach some day, moving to what Singletary does is not the way to do that.
January 8th, 2015 at 2:48 PM ^
I was wondering about Singletary's role b/c the latest recruiting update shows that recruits are getting contacted by Singletary, so he's still being retained in some fashion.
January 8th, 2015 at 4:03 PM ^
scouting or associate AD role. Nuss had told him how many more people Alabama had in their scouting department. It's substantially more than Michigan has had and Sam was speculating that Harbaugh may intend to expand the scouting.
January 8th, 2015 at 1:54 PM ^
That's a lot of offensive side assistants. I think if Fisch is on board, then that might mean that Morton is out. Fisch would take WRs and TEs. Then you can still insert Manning on the defensive side of the ball. We also have no confirmation on what position Dougherty would be taking.
January 8th, 2015 at 2:49 PM ^
yeah 5 O - 3 D - 1 ST coaching breakdown would be unusual especially considering harbaugh handles O as well. theyd have to be very comfortable with mattison and durkin not only working well together but both dudes shouldering significant loads bc thats a ton of responsibility for 3 guys
January 8th, 2015 at 2:03 PM ^
Isn't Harbaugh going to be the QB's coach? I expected Dougherty to be the WR coach and Morton out. A 6 offensive coaches/3 defensive coaches staff looks a bit unbalanced to me.
January 8th, 2015 at 2:06 PM ^
Pass game coordinators tend to be WR coaches, just fwiw. A lot of times PGC/RGC are used simply as glorified titles for WR/OL coaches and have no additional duties... this is the case at Oregon, which has both, an OC and a head coach who calls plays.
January 8th, 2015 at 2:08 PM ^
If Dougherty comes it will be for WR/TE. Was a lot of talk on WTKA roundtable about Morton not being seen on campus and that the only report then goes back to the Sacramento Bee story about Drevno and Morton.
January 8th, 2015 at 2:29 PM ^
you have 3 coaches on the defensive side and 5 on the offensive side + ST?
a 4-4 split + ST is more reasonable.
January 8th, 2015 at 3:23 PM ^
Could Manning take Singletary's postion???
January 8th, 2015 at 3:52 PM ^
Singletary is not a coach. He is temporarily assumimg extra recruiting duties until the staff is filled out. He did the same thing during the last transition.
January 8th, 2015 at 1:46 PM ^
This is Michigan. We don't take kindly to no "pass game coordinators" around here. Let's play some #manball! jk

and agree.

This makes a lot of sense as I was under the impression that the PGC and RGC would have to be Co-OC's. But it looks like Drevno may be the OC (with only him and Harbaugh calling plays on Saturday) with someone like Fisch as PGC and Wheatly as RGC (so he has a more prestigious title than in Buffalo). It could play out like this:
1. Harbaugh - HC/QB
2. Drevno - OC/OL
3. Wheatley - RGC/RB
4. Fisch - PGC (not sure what position group he would coach, maybe TE's but doesn't Baxter have a better track record there?)
5. Daugherty - WR/Associate Head Coach
6. Baxter - STC/TE (TE may go to Fisch, but don't think he's had specific experience coaching TE's, but I guess as an offensive coordinator, you should know all positions. On that same note, maybe Fisch takes OT and Drevno takes interior line, or vice versa, and Baxter gets TE)
7. Durkin - DC/ILB
8. Mattison - DT/Associate Head Coach
9. Jackson - DB
10. Manning - OLB/DE
I kind of love guessing at this as it's like a puzzle, but at the same time, can't wait for it to be over and finalized so we can focus on what's really important....recruiting...I mean, winning.
January 8th, 2015 at 6:15 PM ^
Jim has already said he is calling the plays, so I don't see the point in a RGC/PGC and an OC if none of them are calling plays. Unless OC for Drevno is literally just a title for the pay increase.
January 8th, 2015 at 1:38 PM ^
Jaguars and Miami? Eesh.
Although I guess it doesn't matter as much because Harbaugh.
January 8th, 2015 at 1:46 PM ^
Denard did well in his offense, but let's be clear, he was working with a rookie QB, second year RB, and two rookie WR's in Jacksonville - not exactly a sure fire way to success in the NFL.
January 8th, 2015 at 1:50 PM ^
Yes, but mediocre it seems like as well at Miami and Minnesota where he was also OC. Not particularly excited about this.
January 8th, 2015 at 1:53 PM ^
Judging by Twitter comments on the reported story, Miami fans really liked him and think this is an excellent hire if true. Also helps that he has recruited the Midwest and South Florida.
January 8th, 2015 at 2:37 PM ^
when it comes to coaches - "measure twice then cut".
He's been vetted.
January 8th, 2015 at 2:45 PM ^
I trust Harbaugh. Just not as excited as I was about Drevno, Durkin or some of the other assistants.
January 8th, 2015 at 2:50 PM ^
I don't agree with the logic of:
Jaguars: bad
Miami: bad
Minnesota: not great
Therefore, guy who had jobs at these place is: bad
Nuss came from Alabama fwiw.
January 8th, 2015 at 3:06 PM ^
Nuss also inherited a broken QB, mediocre receivers, a young OL and apparently mediocre RBs until Johnson started to play well.
January 8th, 2015 at 4:38 PM ^
I would guess a part of that came from the O-Line finally starting to come on at the end of the year. I expect you would have seen similar improvement from Green as well. Smith I am not so sure of - he seems almost like a FB stuck in the body of a TB - great for short yardage and at least adequate with a good line, but the lack of speed seemed glaring at a few points last year.
I don't think Nuss was as bad as the team looked last year, He may have been a bit overhyped due to the 'Bama ties but he is a good O-coordinator. I love me some DG but the QB position just killed this offense last year and I am not sure how much more that could have been gameplanned around with the O-line being less than good/great.
January 8th, 2015 at 4:50 PM ^
Also I guarantee you Nuss wouldn't have been as much of a bonehead as Kiffin in the Sugar Bowl.
January 8th, 2015 at 4:55 PM ^
January 8th, 2015 at 1:39 PM ^
That would be Harbaugh's title
January 8th, 2015 at 1:43 PM ^
Whoa Whoa Whoa!!! He has a title!
Signed,
J Ira and Nicki Harris
January 8th, 2015 at 1:46 PM ^
the rest of the family?
January 8th, 2015 at 1:51 PM ^
One thing that really bothers m about that title - other than it's general stupidity - is the juxtaposition of the names "J. Ira" and "Nicki" one of which is super formal the other of which is the opposite.
The dissonance is like nails on a chalkboard.....
