2015 Rumored Assistant Coaches and Recruiting info

Submitted by MGoGrendel on

edit - added a few more names

With the proliferation of “what about our recruiting?” and “who are we getting for coaches” threads, I thought it would make sense to put the two together.  That way we could see where current college coaches have recruiting strengths and opine about possible recruits we can win or flip.

Ace does a great job with a weekly summary of our recruiting.  That would be the best place to get your recruiting answers for current targets (rather than starting a new post!).  Also, Brian has the current Depth Chart in an easy to find place – right there in the drop down under “Useful Stuff” (above).  You can see where we have holes to fill with this easy to reach chart.

I compiled a list of coaches from other threads and got input from MGoBrewMom, Mr. Yost, alum96 and others (thanks!).  If other coaches are of interest, I can add them here.

Let’s start with the coaches mentioned from the pro ranks and a little of their background:

  • Tyrone Wheatley – Bills RB coach; former running back at Michigan and father of a highly touted recruit.
  • Erik Campbell – Montreal Alouettes WR coach; former Iowa WR coach (5 years) and Michigan wide receiver.
  • Andy Moeller –Cleveland Browns O-line coach; former Baltimore Ravens coach, and former Michigan coach and player.  And - teammates with Harbaugh at Michigan! (hat tip to Tater)
  • Ronald Curry – 49ers Offensive Assistant, former NFL and North Carolina wide receiver
  • Greg Roman – 49ers OC; formerly with Harbaugh at Stanford
  • Mike Mallory – Jacksonville Special Teams coach; former linebacker at Michigan
  • (edit) Reggie Davis – San Fran TE coach; playing experience was at tight end on the San Diego Chargers when Harbaugh was QB.

Below are a few of the college coaches mentioned several times through the various posts.  I added Rival’s recruiting information so you can see what geography they recruit from along with positions and rankings.  These are broken down by 2015 commitments they earned and targeted players that committed elsewhere or not at all.  If the information is in Bold, that means that Michigan has offered.  The hyperlinks will take you to the Rivals information (free).

In no particular order:

DJ Durkin– Recently the DC at Florida

He was the Defensive End Coach and Special Teams coach at Stanford from 2007 to 2009.  Played for Bowling Green

It appears that this guy does all the recruiting for Kentucky!  His 2014 recruiting list is off the charts, too.  He mostly recruits in Ohio and doesn’t target a specific position.  My guess is that he is a real likeable guy.

Cool. Thanks for putting this together. You should send it to Harbaugh :)

Durkin doesn't mess around, huh? Aims high.

Others have said it, but if we have an NFL-heavy coaching staff, that will be great for future recruiting but may make it hard for the 2015 class, as one month isn't a lot of time to build the kind of relationships that most recruits value in making their college decision. Maybe Durkin can pull a few in, but it will probably be hard to start from scratch with a recruit at this point.

Lance Anderson, current DC at Stanford. He was with Harbaugh at San Diego and Stanford.  Not sure if the other DC’s on the list would come (based on what I read in each write-up).

Jimmie Dougherty, current OC at San Diego.

Reggie Davis, playing experience was at tight end with time on the same team as Harbaugh at San Diego Chargers.  He spent three years coaching that spot for Harbaugh in San Francisco.

I’m leaving these people off the update:

John Morton, wide receivers coach for the 49ers (since 2011).  He’s from the Midwest, but I don’t know how he would work out in recruiting this area.  He’s was at USC for a bit, as their wide receivers coach.  He may not work out due to the pay difference between NFL and college.  I’ll leave him off my update for now (there is not recruiting results info on him).

Mike Hart.  From the article: “Hold on, hear me out. Yeah, this doesn’t sound like something that will happen given the history between Harbaugh and Hart”.  I did not know that!

Charlie Weis is mentioned as a possible OC in the article, too.  Not sure if anyone has heard of him? …maybe someone has an opinion? …no?  I’ll leave him off the update.

I have a secret man crush on Jim Harbaugh, and all of the likely assistant hires fill my heart with rapture, except one: the likelihood of Greg Roman as OC. After a string of poor OCs at Michigan, hiring another who takes the lions share of blame for the 9ers offensive woes and being singled out for routinely questionable play calling harshes my buzz. I hope Jim doesn't hire him, because I'm ready for Michigan to get off the derp OC carousel.

It was a terrible year for him, perhaps only rivaled by Dave Brandon's year, but prior to this he was pretty good. I like how he successfully designed offenses around both drop back and mobile quarterbacks, all without sacrificing the integrity of the offense. Again, he had a terrible year this year and many of his players sounded off about the direction they were headed and I can understand the apprehension after Borges/Nuss, but I think (hope) he'd be fine here.

Hey guys, I usually just lurk around mgoblog. With these recent events, i am really excited and wanted to get involved.

Whats the word with Durkin? Is it assumed he will accept the position after the bowl game on saturday?

I also saw a few things on kentucky boards about vince morrow, have you guys read anything about that?

I really hope JH brings in and M is willing to pay for top quality assistants, especially on the offensive side of the ball where player development has been woeful for years.  Also, the ability to identify and coach up the hidden gems, a la Wiscy and MSU, would greatly help.  Even JH can't bring in every 5 star he offers.

I'm really interested in who ends up on this staff. I think UM is all in on this endeavour. They are not satisfied with just getting Harbaugh but will go further to get in the assistants he wants. I think it's going to end up a pretty loaded coaching staff.

Don't forget to put "teammate of Jim Harbaugh" on Moeller's "resume."  Coaches tend to like ex-teammates who are "battle-tested."  Moeller had 4 picks in 1986.

I thought Harbaugh referenced winter conditioning starting next week after players return-team meeting Monday or Tuesday. If so who would be running the program? Is Wellman still around to handle on an interim basis or would JH himself just start running until everyone pukes?

you mentioned you might do this last night.   good read.

i came across mike mallory's name in your write-up.  i haven't seen him since my senior year, but back in the day, he was one of the guys.   would be cool to see him on the sidelines, maybe with brother doug, too.

I'd love to see Harbaugh hire a QB coach. It hasn't been done at UM since 2007, and I think UM has paid a price for it. If you look at the top programs in the country, only a handful go the route of single OC/QB coach. The vast majority have either a dedicated QB coach or a co-offensive coordinator set-up with one being a QB coach. In today's game, I think it's imporant for there to be one person for the QB to lean on during a game. It's hard for that to be the OC, who also has to game plan during the week. I know, with Harbaugh's experience he probably thinks he can handle QB duties, but I would prefer that responsibility not fall on the HC during a game. Besides, with Harbaugh's intensity, he would be the last person I would want counseling a QB during a game. I truly believe that was one of the weaknesses of Brady Hoke, not having anyone to work full-time with Gardner. He had so much talent, yet his vision and decision-making never improved, and he seemed to lose confidence as games went on (mostly from getting hit so often and throwing ints). But, a QB-guru confidant could have helped those failures.

You Only Live Twice

January 1st, 2015 at 12:07 PM ^

I tend to think of JH as the ultimate QB coach.  I could be wrong.  His level of intensity would be an asset, rather than a drawback, and together with his experience I look forward to seeing what he does with our QB position for the next 20 years.

Stated he really bonded with AU commits at the UA game and considering a visit to their campus...  Hope Durkin become our DC and close him out...
