This (along with a plethora of other things) makes me long for JMFR one more year
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:32 PM ^
Aw dude now I'm sad, he'd kill it as a rush 'backer
December 22nd, 2014 at 5:00 PM ^
you didn't bring that up because I wouldn't have thought about how amazing that would have been...
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:29 PM ^
I've always been intruiged with Mike McCray as an edge rusher. He has good size and athleticism, and if I recall correctly he was great blitzer coming out of highschool.
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:49 PM ^
We also have RJS, Furbush and Winovich who fit that mold.
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:29 PM ^
I wonder if keeping Mattison in the fold would be something he'd consider. I've been happy with our defense since he's been here.
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:32 PM ^
Mattison was a D Coordinator for John Harbaugh, so there has to be at least a small chance that he and Jim H are buddies ... or at least have ties to the same coaching tree.
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:29 PM ^
But Mattison won't want to run that... so, it's a 4-3 for 2015.
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:34 PM ^
All due respect to Mattison, but after watching his defense get annihilated twice by Tom Herman and Urban Meyer, he might want to shake things up.
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:44 PM ^
Don't forget annihilation by every other team with an offensive pulse.

Offense played a role in that. short field three and outs, and turnovers
December 22nd, 2014 at 5:16 PM ^
Yeah, but the defense ESPECIALLY since it was on the field for so long, only was able to generate 10 turnovers last year - the 3rd worst total. And to be honest, the B1G was not that tough of a league so not sure how to explain this stat. FWIW, MSU defense created 33 and OSU defense created 29.
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:33 PM ^
Didn't GMatt run a 3-4 for John Harbaugh's Ravens D?
December 22nd, 2014 at 5:29 PM ^
He basically ran a 3-4 with lots of 4-3 Under concepts, because the two aren't really that vastly different (you have three interior DL in a 4-3 Under, 3 DL in a 3-4). He basically ran a 4-3 Under with a standup rush end (which he did a little here, a lot in Baltimore, and quite a bit at Florida).
December 22nd, 2014 at 6:57 PM ^
He ran a 3-4 when he was in Baltimore.
December 22nd, 2014 at 5:00 PM ^
If that happened, I would actually welcome the move and this is why.
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:32 PM ^
More like 43-D if we get Harbaugh:
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:35 PM ^
34D sounds like a much better type of that d. 43 sounds kinda "heavy"
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:42 PM ^
43 is fine by me. Big uns welcome

December 22nd, 2014 at 5:11 PM ^
Yeah, but gravity can be such a downer!
December 22nd, 2014 at 7:31 PM ^
That's not how it works...
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:32 PM ^
go with the 3-3-5. Worked great for RR at Michigan.

December 22nd, 2014 at 4:32 PM ^
What does he run?
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:34 PM ^
Durkin apparently may take the Texas A&M job. We'll see, seems like a great young coordinator.
December 22nd, 2014 at 5:40 PM ^
I could be wrong, but I think Durkin liked to mix it up a little bit - I had thought the base defense in Florida, for example, was a 4-3 but that he threw in situational 3-4 looks. That's how it seemed in the few times I watched Florida this year anyway. If we could get a defensive coordinator that ran a nice hybrid scheme, that might not be a bad thing at all.
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:47 PM ^
But until Harbaugh is standing at a podium in Ann Arbor, wearing some not-so-cool Addidas Michigan gear, I'd just rather hold off on the "what-ifs." No ... I'm not of the school-of-thought that message board fanboy chatter can "jinx" real-life events. I'm just leary of the self-inflicted mental harm that would occur if Harbaugh gives us the "Heisman" after the past few weeks of starry-eyed optimism.
For those unfamiliar with my use of the term "Heisman."
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:42 PM ^
I know, right? I mean, Harbaugh has to select his defensive staff before it gets to this.
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:42 PM ^
So in year 3 of Harbaugh do you think his red shirt sophomores will start replacing some of Hoke's Seniors as Michigan tries to defend it's national championship trophy for the second straight year?
Or will our Heisman-winning QB have to take a seat behind our first time ever SIX star recruit to get him some playing time?
December 22nd, 2014 at 5:05 PM ^
Six Star Mafia. The Michigan Difference.
December 22nd, 2014 at 5:09 PM ^
Wait, this sounds a little like sarcasm.
December 22nd, 2014 at 9:03 PM ^
You asshole
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:33 PM ^
Fine by me because it means we got Harbaugh.

He did run a 4-3 for a few years at stanford, it probably depends on what he thinks the players can do and the coordinator
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:37 PM ^
I prefer 4-3.

I'm sure they'll consider your feelings on the matter.
December 22nd, 2014 at 7:03 PM ^
Who cares what the scheme is as long as its Harbaugh!
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:44 PM ^
I think our players could fit in a 3-4, we have a couple NT size players, poggi seems like a DE fit, our current weak side DE's couple probably move to rush LB if properly coached
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:37 PM ^

December 22nd, 2014 at 4:46 PM ^
Probably the 4-3 to begin with anyway, depends on the factors you named.
Bo you might want to see a Doctor, you keep saying the same things over and over.
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:42 PM ^
DT is the strength of the team and DE is weak, so it would make sense to put 3 of our DT types out there at once.
Not sure we have the Rush LB types to support it, but we are fairly deep at LB next year.
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:43 PM ^
It costs less for Michigan to retain Mattison as a linebackers coach or co-defensive cordinator if Harbaugh wants him. I would expect that he would want him in some capacity for continuity and recruiting.
December 22nd, 2014 at 6:24 PM ^
That is assuming that Mattison wants to stay and at a lower position at that. I doubt that G-Matt is with the program ever again. He will just retire. Unless of course they keep him as DC.

He'd be giving up a lot of money if he retires.
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:48 PM ^
Wormley, Strobel, Hurst, Henry at DE. Pipkins and Mone at NT. Furbush, Charleton, Ojemida, RJS could all play the overhang.
If we choose to go there at least DL and LB are strengths of the team and have depth.
December 22nd, 2014 at 5:01 PM ^
Is he a fit to play NT in a 3-4?
