Could Drob = Dexter McCluster 2.0 in future if given chance?

Submitted by BrewCityBlue on

First off let me say I've never been in favor of switching Drob to a different primary position so far. I am not in favor of it until we have 1 or 2 other viable options at qb behind Tate.

I HAVE wanted him more involved, but not from the starting QB position. I just don't think he offers us enough unpredictable versatility on offense. I also have thought Tate needs every snap he can get to help prepare him for the future and thicken his skin after he makes mistakes.

HOWEVER, in watching the Ole Miss LSU game, I just couldn't help but see flashes of future DROB when I saw Dexter McCluster at RB for Ole Miss. I can't necessarily explain why. I can't even say that I agree with these visions I was having. I was just having them so I'm seeing if anyone else knows what I'm talking about.

I think McCluster used to be a WR, and was moved to RB and it has proved quite effective. I'm not saying this means Drob would be an effective RB if moved there from QB. I am saying it is an interesting proposition and more than anything i'm looking for your opinions on the matter.

Maybe Devin doesn't red shirt, takes Denard's place as a mixup to Tate, and Denard starts mixing in with Vsmith and Shaw at RB?

Once again, I don't even know if I like this, but for some reason I couldn't stop thinking about it so I decided to get the MGoCommunity's opinion.

Oh, "desmondkillsherbie" or whatever your name is... Don't feel like you need to post anything stupid in response to my asking for your response. In fact, feel you should definitely not post anything stupid in response to me asking for your response. Everyone else... thanks in advance!

Not even going to rule it out. I'm just wondering if it could be more than that. Drob should be just as speedy and shifty as him. Whether he could hold up would by my question. Ball security would also have to be a question if he was going to have that many touches in traffic.
I just couldn't get it out of my head so wanted to post and see what others thought.
Someone tell me I saw something besides the dreads to make me come to this conclusion!!!

drob is very hesitant when he runs. he won't be truly explosive until he get a little more confidence. i hope a little more game time for him to get acclimated will help.

He looks more hesitant because he knows...that the defense knows...that he is running the QB dive.

I agree though....there has got to be a way to get him the ball in open space more.

Am I allowed to use the phrase "athletic quarterback?" If DROB is a legit athletic QB he surely has Michael Vick visions dancing in his head, and rightfully should resist being shoehorned into RB, for obvious ($) reasons.

No. Robinson is a QB for us and always will be. The only reason he played elsewhere at the end of the year was either to keep his confidence up, or to try and give him a chance in the open field. He's had one month of coaching. Everybody is telling us to give Tate time when he's had 6 months. Robinson needs a lot more than 1 month. He also didn't grow up in a pedigree like Tate, so comparing their progress is moot (I know you didn't, but its part of the "Move Denard out because he can run" argument). He wouldn't even be effective else where, you can see he's uncomfortable running at tail back. Just being fast isn't enough in college to go and play a skill position. Yeah Percy Harvin and McCluster are fast, they're also great running backs (And Harvin is a great receiver as well).

I actually have a unique story in that I split my childhood between Mississippi and New Jersey and went to the University of Michigan for college, so I follow Ole Miss. There are times when Snead is not even involved in the offense and McCluster either gets a direct handoff or they run a straight wildcat with Bolden getting the snap. Other times, he's a slot receiver. I do see a future for DRob with that type of offense, but he really needs to improve his passing. If DRob can develop short throws to our improved slot receivers, he can really be a threat at QB and out of the backfield. Ole Miss has done a good job rotating Snead and the wildcat and I see no reason why that can't be done here with Forcier and DRob, with DRob being even more of a threat if he can throw to the slot receivers. I also think it's a good idea to have him and Forcier out at the same time, but as a ball catching RB and not out wide like today.
