OT Ann Arbor breakfast joints

Submitted by 2Blue4You on

Slow day for the CC so we need something to keep our minds off the obvious until the 28th.

I went to breakfast yesterday at an AA diner and it was solid as are most all diner/greasy spoon type places that offer breakfast all day, but not over the top, plan my Saturday/Sunday morning around.  I know the typical Angelo's, Weber's Brunch, Northside, and Fleetwood offer solid slightly different takes on the breakfast and are pretty awesome in their own right.

My question to the board is what weekend breakfast options to you HIGHLY recommend for takeout?  I usually get up first in my house and want to grab coffee and bring home something amazing b/c Ann Arbor is a foodie paradise.  My only current go to is Washtenaw Dairy donuts.

What  peaked this was my brother lives in AZ and we get breakfast burritos every breakfast we are out there and bring them home.  The perfect balance of potatoes, eggs, cheese, meat of choice and red/green sauce.  Nothing I have had here has been on that same level.  Thanks.

Fleetwood does takeout. Honestly, for breakfast, it begins and ends there for me. Unless my cholesterol had sufficiently dropped to make an infusion of Angelo's deep fried French toast appropriate.

Benny's down on Industrial is a very good option, and tends to give you a little more bang for the buck than the downtown options.  If you're looking for something a little fancier, Afternoon Delight on Liberty has some very good food but will put a bigger dent in your wallet.  Cloverleaf, also on Liberty, is another one more along the "greasy spoon" lines, but not spectacular.  I prefer Benny's to the Cloverleaf myself.

Benny's has been a favorite of mine since I was a Sophomore. Instead of waiting hours at the other campus places, we'd load up into whoever had a car and drive there. Good food, prices are good, not as busy and it's a popular spot for athletes so you can heckle them about their loss the day before (don't actually do this).

I agree with your assessment about Benny's, their bacon have gotten better the past few months as well. Chances are good you will see athletes. Saw DG order bacon...chewy, soggy, pale bacon. Not sure if that contributes to slower movement but not having as much fat cooked off can only contribute to more sacks when he has to run from unblocked pass rushers. I guess he could be storing fat so he has enough energy to run from the unblocked pass rushers in the 4th quarter.

Another vote for Benny's. Very good value, and just what the doctor ordered after a long night of drinking. The food is nothing to write home about, but it meets expectations and there's rarely a line. I also have a soft spot for the Broken Egg, but I have no idea why.

Afternoon Delight is definitely a top choice in Ann Arbor.  Ypsilanti (surprisingly) has a few good ones too.  The Bomber Restaurant is a classic, as is the Wolverine Grill on Michigan Ave.  Also Beezy's is a hipster haven on Washington and they have a great menu although I think they may be more of a sandwich place now.

Next to Afternoon Delight is an awesome place called What Crepe.  Before you negging this, I was never into foo-foo foods, but they have a ton of savory, meaty crepes which are great, try the spicy chicken - like a burrito, but without the corn or flour tortilla.

And Groupon often has coupons for them so it is a win-win!

One of the things I enjoy about that place is that that you can top your omelet with sausage gravy and the calories from that combination alone will keep you going for the better part of 2 or 3 days. In all seriousness though, there are plenty of good things on the menu there - it's very popular with our Ann Arbor Service Center staff, being that the warehouse out there is just across the street, more or less.

The two you mentioned are my favorites.  Fleetwood is the king of diner-type options.  Washtenaw Dairy makes some of the best donuts I've had.  Now I want both of these...might have to make a stop this weekend!

OP was a huge pot head and liked to smoke joints in AA in the morning.

In all seriousness, Nick's Original House of Pancakes is pretty good for breakfast (94 & Ann Arbor-Saline).  Not sure if they do takeout.

I occasionally eat breakfast there with some friends, and it's a classic greasy spoon—mediocre/average greasy food, terrible coffee, unpretentious, ugly decor. It's close to the office, so that's the main plus.

Their coffee is so bad I'm mentioning it again. Really, really bad coffee.
