META?: MGoBlog alerts sent to your phone

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

So, in a thread yesterday about MGoBlog F5 condition, I brought up how I use MGoFeed to get SMS alerts every time an MGoPost or thread is added to MGoBlog.

There were some people in that thread that had no idea they could receive MGoBlog updates. So for those curious or wanting to get the big news and would prefer an instant text message alert when a thread is posted, here it-

STEP 1- (Ignore this if you already have a twitter account)

Make a Twitter account. No, you don't have to ever send a tweet. Ever. This is just a "decoy" to get the SMS alerts

STEP 2-

Once you make your account, you will navigate towards the upper right hand corner of the web page where you will see your profile picture (an egg for those who just made a Twitter account).

When you click on your photo, a menu will pop up underneath it. see example:

You will then click "Settings".

STEP 3-

Once you click settings you will see a menu that says "Account" with a sidebar on the left side of your screen that contains various submenus. see example:

You will then click "Mobile" and begin your registration to enable SMS alerts. These alerts aren't any premium type deal and standard rates apply.

STEP 4-

Once you go through the registration process with your cell phone which includes Twitter sending you a confirmation code, you will then go and search "MGoFeed" on twitter OR you can click here to get to the MGoFeed's twitter page.

This is MGoFeed's account photo FWIW

STEP 5-

Once you are on MGoFeed's twitter page, follow MGoFeed. Then, right next to the "follow" button, will be a gear. see example-

When you click on the gear, a pop-up menu will be revealed under the gear. There will be an option on there to "turn on mobile notifications".

There it is. Enjoy! MGoFeed SMS alerts include a text message sent directly to your phone as soon as the MGoFeed tweets. These alerts will include all posts to main page, all MGoBoard posts and all posts in the mgo.liciou.us

Eh, it gets the job done. I'm not gonna say I love it it but I'll deal with it because it's cheap and I can still do things Iphone users can do.

The only thing about the phone that I hate is the camera and the Youtube app being glitchy.

Oh, and the fact that I can't find any Michigan skin or phone case for it.

The one thing that I would like to see improve in the app is the consistency with which posts made from the app make it to the actual site. It seems like sometimes only sections of conversation or even single replies will appear and not readily correspond to anything going on in the larger conversation in a given thread. It's particularly apparently during games. I've always wondered if there was a way to improve that aspect of the interface.

that people who own Apple crap are always chastizing everyone else for not also owning Apple crap?

Jesus, we get it.  You (not Get Jim Harbaugh specifically) LOOOOOVE Apple and can't imagine how anyone else in the world could possibly use anything else.

Guess what?  I'm glad you love your Apple crap so much.  Now shut up about it already.

There are tons of guys who go on boards and say nothing other than people that buy Apple are sheep (see post above) who are fooled by marketing, that Android is far superior, that the (many) expert reviews that praise Apple are by "bought and paid for" reviewers on the take. I think it's objectively true that both Galaxy and iPhone are excellent products---IMO having used both Apple is far superior in all the ways that matter to me, but I would never say that Samsung makes crap products. I wish people would just chill and like the product they like without bashing it's rival and its buyers but oh well that's the internet.

Everyone loves the Galaxy phones, but I had an S3 that was so awful it made me never want to get a Samsung again. No autocorrect, GPS navigation hardly worked, camera sucked, cheap-feeling construction, various other annoying glitches and bugs, way too much bloatware. My girlfriend had an S2 for a whole that was actually worse. Those are obvioualy way obsolete by now and I'm sure the S5 is much better, but meh. Switched to the Moto X and I think it is far superior.

But it's not "both sides" because this is about more than phones.  Every market segment that Apple is in, their customers do this.  If you go on the web and ask any question about a Windows PC, some Apple customer comes into the thread and posts a snarky answer along the lines of "you obviously wouldn't ever have any computer problems ever again for the rest of your life if you just bought a Mac"

Like I said, we get it.  You Apple people are mad in love with your Apple crap.  So get this--we aren't going to buy Apple stuff and we have perfectly valid reasons why we aren't going to do it.  So when pepple ask and answer questions about non-Apple stuff, kindly take all of your smarmy "just buy an iPhone", or "just buy a Mac" answers and STFU.

Honestly, go on CNET, Wired, Gizmodo or sites like that, and as soon as an apple product review goes up immediately Android and Samsung fans troll in exactly the same way. I said both sides, so I don't excuse Apple fans at all, they do that as well. But it is really equal.

If you have a smart phone, you can also just turn on notifications for mgofeed in your twitter app. That way you'll get notified but it won't use up your text messages. Thanks for this info WD.

MGoBlog app on my tablet and Twitter Feeds on my Windows Phone.  I'm gonna need a detox after this is all over.  At least I won't be hammering F5 like last time.

Thanks WD

Android is for developers and self integrators and people who like to tinker and tweak. The iPhone is for people who don't have time or interest and just want complex technology to simply work for them. Both have their big brother aspects like when I phones slammed every user over to imessage and it took my wife two weeks to figure out I wasn't getting all of her messages.
