Somebody explain to me why Minnesota punted down 10 with 3 and a half minutes left. Nobody on Twitter has mentioned the idiocy of this and I feel like I'm missing something. Now they have it back down 10 with 1:15 to go...

When a player signals a fair catch, instead of letting up, the punt team should continue at full speed so that if it's dropped, someone on the punt team can dive for it, clobbering the returner in the process, and leaving the ball alone to be recovered by other members of the punt team.

If the return man catches it, the gunner could just run by to the side of the returner.  Even better would be for the gunner to find the football when the fair catch is signalled, and then time his fly-by approach accordingly so that he could pounce at the feet of the return man should the opportunity present itself.

(Note that I believe a loose/bobbled ball isn't fair game until it hits the ground.)

Damn showing Pitt Miami on ESPN 2 on DirectTV rather than end of Baylor game.

With Miss State loss any upset next week of FSU, Bama, or Oregon sets up either Baylor or OSU into the playoff IF Baylor wins tonight.  If not, OSU is the "5th team" - damnit. Go Wisconsin!

But I think that the rankings are now really:

1. Bama
2/3 Oregon/FSU ("weak" ACC swept the SEC 4-0 today)
4. The Top Big 12 team (TCU this week, Baylor? next)
5. Ohio State
6. The 2nd Big 12 team (Baylor this week, TCU? next)

I think the Top Big12 team stays ahead of OSU unless both TCU and Baylor lose next week.

Three games ago, Patrick Mahomes threw for about 100 yards against Texas in his first meaningful action this season... tonight he throws for damn near 600 against Baylor.  How the hell does that even happen?

So assuming Alabama wins, top 10 playoff committee should be

  1. Bama
  2. Oregon
  3. FSU
  4. TCU
  5. Baylor or OSU
  6. OSU or Baylor
  7. Arizona (passing MSU due to beating a high rank team)
  8. MSU
  9. KSU
  10. Wiscy

Falling out - Miss State, Georgia, UCLA.  Missouri and GA Tech should jump to just outside top 10.
