4.5 seconds is A LOT of time to get the ball up court. Have no idea why everybody was past half court. Other than that, great game. Excellent out of bounds play to Irvin, just an even better play on that block (which was completely clean).

I have an idea why: As great of a coach as Beilein is, he is absolutely god awful at any sort of inbounds plays. It's a great thing for us that that is the only area of his coaching ability that is obviously lacking, but it's like they never practice inbounding situations. You can rest assured we'll have at least a couple avoidable losses every from close games where inbounding was the final nail in the coffin.

No, I'm not kidding you at all, nor am I the only one on this blog or among the people in the real world I've talked to that has echoed this sentiment.  Though I will say god awful may be a slight exagerration for below average.  Year after year, if you watch the games and focus on the inbounds plays that he draws up during critical plays, they are truly lacking.  A lot of that comes down to the player's execution, but that points back to it potentially not being an area the team is not provided enough practice reps on.

Max made a terrible pass, but he shouldn't have been put in a position where his only options were to players (only one of which who was really moving) on the other side of half court.

Anways, I seem to be the only person who cares about Beilein's history with inbounds plays here tonight, so I'll take a step back and let the negs flow free.

Pretty nice design. If Irvin goes up with two arms strong he probably muscles through with the game winning dunk. Or definitely shoots two. Had time to go up and under also on the right side. Stauskas however would've flushed that baby home!

They were concerned about an intentional foul in the back court. That is why they tried to push it.

Yes, that was a clean block, but those refs sucked all game. Sometimes the suck evens out. We had a couple go our way; there was an obvious travel wasn't called that I remember seeing. But, Villanova was the beneficiary of many more of the terrible calls. Objectively bad refs, and to me, they were primarily bad on one end...

He played a lot better today.  Again this is his 5th college game -- big men are usually slow to develop.  Mitch struggled for 15 games his first year and was a top 20 talent.   He is not going to be an imposing physical threat but he brings other talents.  You mix Thunder (Doyle) and Lightning (Donnal) and its a nice mix - these 2 are just babies.

I'm giving Beilein the benefit of the doubt (because he's earned it) and saying there was supposed to be a quick release valve for Donnal on that first inbounds play.  The second inbounds play was just bad.  Beilfeldt has had is day in the sun.  He should never be in the game unless absolutely necessary or we're up 15.  He's just not good enough.

Oh yeah, and basketball refs should all be baseketball refs.

The second inbound play was not that bad at all it gave what they wanted a wide open man Max just forced it to the first curl, but Walton was WIIIDDDEEE open as in noby within 10 feet of him at halfcout.  He could have put up a good shot with everybody flowing with Irvin on the first curl.

I took a picture of it, but am having trouble getting it to show up on this thread.  He grazes the ball, the completely hacks Walton's left arm.  So, the ball was actually off of Walton.  He should have been shooting two free throws to take the lead.  It was a lot of arm.

Hows that for a snowflake? We'd have probably won had we been down in the last 2 minutes instead of them.
That's what's fucking wrong with college bball.

The ticky-tack fouls on our bigs was huge.  We had to put Bielfeldt in with our lead at 6-8 and we quickly squandered that lead.

I almost think all fouls should be reviewed at the end of games (say inside 2 minutes or so) if the game is close.  That way refs are encouraged to call the game fairly (instead of being "afraid" to "alter" the outcome of the game) in the waning minutes and they can discuss.  There are obvious downsides to this (too much time spent on reviews, for example) so I don't know if this is viable.

Yup yup. When Doyle/Donnal went out with their 4th (I forget who was out last) and Bielfeldt came in with a 7-8 pt lead and a few minutes left, I had the terrible feeling we were about to blow the lead.

If the refs didnt decide any contact by Michigan bigs warranted a foul, we probably win the game tonight

I don't know about the reviewing fouls part, but the fouls on our bigs were huge.  And maybe they were ticky tack, but we gave up way too many fouls on plays where Nova got a defensive board and we reached in or shoved the guy that made the board for no good reason.  All three of our bigs were guilty of this.  The only reason I can think of is because we were so awful rebounding against Oregon that we emphasized being more physical inside tonight, and the guys got a little carried away a few times.  You have to pick your spots better, and get back on D once they've secured possession.  Failure to do so tonight resulted directly in forcing Bielfeldt into the lineup late where Nova made it a point to exploit the matchup.  If Doyle in particular is able to play those last few minutes, I think we probably win the game.

The freshman are bette than Beilfeldt no doubt. Theres a reson Beilein plays them more. He definitley sees more from them in practice. But thats a good thing when you have a guy with that much experience coming off the bench
