I really think by Big Ten play Doyle will be an animal. Definitely by tourney time.
November 26th, 2014 at 12:31 AM ^
The bigs are playing better then expected at this point. They will be ready in january

4.5 seconds is A LOT of time to get the ball up court. Have no idea why everybody was past half court. Other than that, great game. Excellent out of bounds play to Irvin, just an even better play on that block (which was completely clean).

I couldn't understand this either, it was as if Irvin, Caris, and Walton weren't allowed to come in front of the halfcourt line.
November 26th, 2014 at 12:29 AM ^
I assumed it was to get a shot before getting fouled.
November 26th, 2014 at 12:30 AM ^
I'm guessing they were expecting to get fouled so they ....ah fuck it. No idea either. On another note, thanks Dan Dakich for the jinx.
I'm actually quite pleased how Michigan overcame adversity and struggle toward the end of the 1st half and start at the 2nd half.
Go Blue!

Absolutely god awful? Are you kidding me?
November 26th, 2014 at 12:41 AM ^
No, I'm not kidding you at all, nor am I the only one on this blog or among the people in the real world I've talked to that has echoed this sentiment. Though I will say god awful may be a slight exagerration for below average. Year after year, if you watch the games and focus on the inbounds plays that he draws up during critical plays, they are truly lacking. A lot of that comes down to the player's execution, but that points back to it potentially not being an area the team is not provided enough practice reps on.

Max made a terrible pass, but he shouldn't have been put in a position where his only options were to players (only one of which who was really moving) on the other side of half court.
Anways, I seem to be the only person who cares about Beilein's history with inbounds plays here tonight, so I'll take a step back and let the negs flow free.

His inbounds plays are amazing. It's just getting the ball there that's the problem. Perhaps we need bigger players inbounding it. The last play was set up really well and would have worked if Irvi didn't get stuffed. You win some and lose some.
November 26th, 2014 at 1:06 AM ^
Pretty nice design. If Irvin goes up with two arms strong he probably muscles through with the game winning dunk. Or definitely shoots two. Had time to go up and under also on the right side. Stauskas however would've flushed that baby home!
November 26th, 2014 at 12:37 AM ^
You have absolutelty no idea what you're talking about.
November 26th, 2014 at 12:38 AM ^
I take that as you missed the beautiful play he drew up for Irvin that got blocked? That play was excellent.
November 26th, 2014 at 12:42 AM ^
That play was quite nice and executed very well, unfortunately Villanova defended it even better.
November 26th, 2014 at 1:10 AM ^
with the one left hand. Right when he caught it he should've took it with two hands and tomahawked it. Game winner baby.
November 26th, 2014 at 9:49 AM ^
Then that wouldn't be a tomahawk at all...
November 26th, 2014 at 12:39 AM ^
Was this the first Michigan game you've seen?
November 26th, 2014 at 12:44 AM ^
Yes, yes it was. Thank you for your input.
November 26th, 2014 at 1:07 AM ^
That's hyperbole, but I agree that it has been a bit of a struggle over the last three years. Then again, he drew up a beauty at Purdue last year and for Irvin tonight.
November 26th, 2014 at 11:56 AM ^
Hey. Don't bring up tangible examples of game winning inbounds plays. Completely destroys his narrative.

I don't know about Donnal, he got pushed around a bunch. Those missed free throws were a dagger in my heart ;(...
Kid needs to get some confidence and umph in his step when on the court.
November 26th, 2014 at 12:45 AM ^
He played a lot better today. Again this is his 5th college game -- big men are usually slow to develop. Mitch struggled for 15 games his first year and was a top 20 talent. He is not going to be an imposing physical threat but he brings other talents. You mix Thunder (Doyle) and Lightning (Donnal) and its a nice mix - these 2 are just babies.
November 26th, 2014 at 12:32 AM ^
Unless.. of course... they both average a foul every third minute.
November 26th, 2014 at 12:26 AM ^
the last few minutes, especially in defensive intensity. Offense got stuck a couple times and degraded into 1 v 1.
Still a good tournament.

I'm giving Beilein the benefit of the doubt (because he's earned it) and saying there was supposed to be a quick release valve for Donnal on that first inbounds play. The second inbounds play was just bad. Beilfeldt has had is day in the sun. He should never be in the game unless absolutely necessary or we're up 15. He's just not good enough.
Oh yeah, and basketball refs should all be baseketball refs.
November 26th, 2014 at 12:31 AM ^
The second inbound play was not that bad at all it gave what they wanted a wide open man Max just forced it to the first curl, but Walton was WIIIDDDEEE open as in noby within 10 feet of him at halfcout. He could have put up a good shot with everybody flowing with Irvin on the first curl.
November 26th, 2014 at 12:43 AM ^
You're probably right. Add that to my second point on Beilfeldt.
November 26th, 2014 at 12:27 AM ^
That review was awkward, where it was obviously off of Michigan because he was hacked. So the refs just pretended they didn't see nothing.
November 26th, 2014 at 12:38 AM ^
that play unless it was with the body...it was all hand on ball stripping it from Walton.
November 26th, 2014 at 3:25 AM ^
I took a picture of it, but am having trouble getting it to show up on this thread. He grazes the ball, the completely hacks Walton's left arm. So, the ball was actually off of Walton. He should have been shooting two free throws to take the lead. It was a lot of arm.

The ticky-tack fouls on our bigs was huge. We had to put Bielfeldt in with our lead at 6-8 and we quickly squandered that lead.
I almost think all fouls should be reviewed at the end of games (say inside 2 minutes or so) if the game is close. That way refs are encouraged to call the game fairly (instead of being "afraid" to "alter" the outcome of the game) in the waning minutes and they can discuss. There are obvious downsides to this (too much time spent on reviews, for example) so I don't know if this is viable.
November 26th, 2014 at 12:35 AM ^
Yup yup. When Doyle/Donnal went out with their 4th (I forget who was out last) and Bielfeldt came in with a 7-8 pt lead and a few minutes left, I had the terrible feeling we were about to blow the lead.
If the refs didnt decide any contact by Michigan bigs warranted a foul, we probably win the game tonight
November 26th, 2014 at 9:12 AM ^
I don't know about the reviewing fouls part, but the fouls on our bigs were huge. And maybe they were ticky tack, but we gave up way too many fouls on plays where Nova got a defensive board and we reached in or shoved the guy that made the board for no good reason. All three of our bigs were guilty of this. The only reason I can think of is because we were so awful rebounding against Oregon that we emphasized being more physical inside tonight, and the guys got a little carried away a few times. You have to pick your spots better, and get back on D once they've secured possession. Failure to do so tonight resulted directly in forcing Bielfeldt into the lineup late where Nova made it a point to exploit the matchup. If Doyle in particular is able to play those last few minutes, I think we probably win the game.
November 26th, 2014 at 12:28 AM ^
The freshman are bette than Beilfeldt no doubt. Theres a reson Beilein plays them more. He definitley sees more from them in practice. But thats a good thing when you have a guy with that much experience coming off the bench

For Michigan -
eFG% - 47.27%
OREB% - 21.21%
FTR - 9.09%
TO% - 16.13%
For Villanova -
eFG% - 50.98%
OREB% - 25.81%
FTR - 25.49%
TO% - 18.65%
Neither team was above 1.00 points per possession - Michigan had 0.91 to Villanova's 0.98. Our A/T ratio was 0.909 and VIllanova has an A/T ratio of 0.615.
November 26th, 2014 at 12:44 AM ^
What an improvement on the boards against a good rebounding team. Not sure how they went from a 40+% free throw rate team to a 9% one. Hmmm...
November 26th, 2014 at 12:29 AM ^
thought Ricky Doyle was fine. Bielfeldt was overmatched and Donnal held his ground at times but holy shit these refs were bad.
