OT: Wisconsin-Nebraska create a trophy

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

EDIT: better look

Wisconsin and Nebraska announced the creation of a "rivalry" trophy today.

I had to look at this for a moment to realize what it was. Pretty dumb, trophies for these manufactured rivalries are.

Here were 20 rejected names for this trophy (/s)

  1. The Freedom Cup
  2. The Freedom Treasure
  3. The Freedom Door Prize
  4. The Freedom's Just Another Word for 'Nothing Left to Lose' Trophy
  5. Jim Delany's Hot 'N Zesty Freedom BBQ Sauce
  6. The Freedom '90 (I Won't Let You Down) Cup
  7. Frito-Lay Bag O' Freedom Fun Twists (King Size)
  8. Free Wi-fi
  9. Several Cans of Dr. Pepper
  10. The Justice Trophy
  11. The Liberty Trophy
  12. The Statue of Liberty
  13. Marcus Liberty
  14. FarmersOnly.com Bucket of Corn Meal
  15. The Big Ten West Division Participation Medal
  16. The Easiest Hardest Divisional Game in College Football Championship Banner
  17. This Shovel
  18. Gary
  19. The Don't Worry the Loser Still Gets to Play Iowa Cup
  20. [The Freedom Trophy] (placeholder until an actual name is chosen)

More examples of trophies for manufactured rivalries include the likes of the "Heros Trophy" (Iowa vs Nebraska)

The Governor's Victory Bell (created for PSU-Minnesota, which Minnesota broke last year)

And the ugliest and most WTF-causing creations in the history of trophies: the Land Grant Trophy featuring MSU and PSU

this depends. Natural rivalries, like Iowa-Nebraska, can be quickly established. The enmity exists there due to proximity of the fanbase, which is why MSU is a fierce rival even though they aren't always competitve. Even tangible rivalries developed over time can feel contrived... see the Illinois-Michigan rivalry that only exists to Illinois fans but is deeply felt by them.

sorry for the embarassingly late reply to you, but Illinois fans consider us their primary football rival ahead of both NW and the manufactured OSU trophy rivalry. The when and why are hard to ascertain... what is for certain is that they fired Gary Moeller after three seasons, Bo took that as a slight, and he proceeded to put a special focus on beating the Illini, culminating in a merciless 70-21 beat down.

After that, the one-sided hate just kept building.

M00N Trophy must be created

1. A large print copy of The Stand

2. Enormous plastic cube holding an actual moon rock in it.

3. A woodcarving bust which has Pat Fitzgeralds visage on one side and Brady Hokes on the other.

And it isn't the lee greenwood version it is a MIDI interpretation Programmed in china by a 12 yo wiz kid with a belt to his back.  Best part, as I understand it, is when you open the lid the song comes on and you find the delicious snack, corn nuts while NE has it brats and cheddar beer soup when WI has it.

Sorry kids but you're going to try a LOT harder if you want to win the ugliest, dumbest most awkwardly embarrassing rivalry tropy award.

Daddy has a cob for you.

They couldn't have made something more catered to the two states involved? Seems kinda forced and generic to me imo.

Crazy how The Game never had a trophy through all the years... Does Michigan get something like the Golden Pants like the Buckeyes do if Michigan wins?

People out here hate these fabricated rivalries. Sure, no one here likes Iowa, but being neighbors with Iowans for a couple years has taught me to dislike them and their terrible driving as well.

They yearn for playing OU, Mizzou, Texas, KSU, and the rest of the Big XII and I don't blame them.

No one thought the Big Ten would continue to be this assy when they made the move. The Iowa game would be intense if if was the Iowa of the mid-late 2000s. It also wouldn't be as bad if Purdue, Illinois, Rutgers, and Minnesota weren't their B1G home games this year, either.

Also if they got to play Michigan or Ohio State.

For a conference so hung up on tradition, they sure make shit up at the drop of a hat. Shouldn't you actually want to get back that which is held dear in the rivalry? The little brown jug, paul bunyans axe, those are awesome! Most of the new fabricated junk sculptures, not so much.

All the good trophies are old pieces of junk, and in many cases they were stolen first before they were played over.

They spent way too much money on many of these trophies when they could have just gone to a couple of antique stores, bought some large piece of crap like a wooden corn cob the size of a Cigar Store Indian and just painted half of it one teams color and half of it the other.

Or perhaps Wisconsin could have stolen one of those heated benches the last time they played at Nebraska and they could play The Battle for the Hot Bench every year.

Here's what the inscription says:

“The Freedom Trophy pays tribute to the brave men and women who have fought in our nation’s wars. The University of Wisconsin’s Camp Randall Stadium, built on what was once a Civil War training ground, and the University of Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium, dedicated in honor of our nation’s veterans, stand as proud monuments to those who have sacrificed so much in the name of freedom.”

or a bag of cheese popcorn.  The last thing this conferecne needs is another super ugly trophy that a bunch of overhyped winning football players are going to pull aprt.  But if they do, it should be edible.
