Elliott Takes Shot at Dantonio for Guaranteeing Win for Spartans #DontGuaranteeWinsCoach
I am mostly posting this for reference when the day comes 350 some odd days from now when Dantonio takes affront for a UM player sneezing within 2 hours of his presence as an affront to his manhood, all of Spartanhood, and greater mankind - we can just say "oh really now?"
Friday some ESPN show call First Take was on campus in EL with Gameday. Per this Eleven Warriors piece Dantonio was asked if "we got a win coming tommorow right?" his response was "we got a win coming."
Now of course the normal coach speak is to say "we are going to have 2 great competitors coming out tomorow and it's gonna be a heck of game"... or if you are Lou Holtz circa 1994 "I doubt we have even a 2% chance to win tomorrow, this MAC team we are playing is one of the best MAC teams I have ever seen or anyone has ever seen..." (for those of you too young, Holtz would build up any opponent as the greatest thing on earth).
But this is not a normal coach in EL; this is one who takes affront to anything on Earth said against him, his program, his players, or anything with 50 miles of campus. So it was shocking to hear. And I'm sure he wanted to take his foot right back out of his mouth.
Now of course Spartan Nation immediately defended him and said this was a leading question - how else should he answer... no? (I outlined proper answers by a coach 2 paragraphs earlier). The same group of people who would have cried bloody murder, bulletin board material, a lack of respect, and all the now tired cliches if Meyer had said "we got a win coming."
If one were a cynic one might even say Dantonio was incredibly prideful. You know, like right before a fall was coming ... within 30 hours. So as the MSU faithful said it was no big deal, master philosopher Urban, who apparently is also a jedi master in manufacturing disrespect saw differently. How do we know this?
Well young Ezekiel Elliott went to twitter post game with some parting shots including a final shot of the movie 300 with a lot of flattened Spartans laid out post battle - but the one that must have stuck in Dantonio's craw (because as we know he monitors opposing RBs comment very closely)
The worst feeling is talking too much and not backin it up. Love my brothers on the next one. Go Bucks! #DontGuaranteeWinsCoach
In the words of the great philosopher queen Mrs. Bielemna. .... karma.

Let me get my coaching candidate: Ronald McDonald piece ready next. It's even better. ;)

Because Mr. Dantonio seems to. On the other hand, that was nothing like football we witnessed against NW yesterday.
Seriously, when we're not utterly pathetic we can go back to taking vague swipes of this kind. (Okay, we're giving this guy a hard time because in front of a woman with enormous breasts and in a total clownshow atmosphere he shyly rose to the occasion and said that his team would win? This is some kind of offense to humanity?) In the meantime, glass houses, etc.
I mean, I have known we were bad, but the depths of deplorable suck that we plumbed yesterday. . . .

I was thinking Bump Elliott, Jumbo Elliott... Elliott Mealer's shown he can be a bit outspoken, but that's on Twitter...
November 9th, 2014 at 8:09 AM ^
What else is he supposed to say. Even had a nice grimace (aka smile). Much ado about nothing.
November 9th, 2014 at 8:22 AM ^
It wasn't much ado about nothing for the Buckeyes it seems from the tweets yesterday.
And yes any other coach on earth I would shrug but this one takes slight to the most minor of things and creates massive molehills - out of comments just like this. I can't imagine what he would have said about shoving "the win up...up..." if Hoke had said it on a similar TV show prior to a MSU-UM game.
Some of you guys are SOOO serious - for us living in Michigan we only have small victories in football the past 6 years and mostly not of our own accord since we can''t do much (ex 2012) to them with our neutering. So just have a little fun and don't be such a serious pants.
That said, while I dont see Sparty going anywhere as long as Dantonio is there it would be sort of great if this comment was the zenith of the program in this cycle. Sort of like everyone piling into the greatest IPO at a bull market top. ;)

A football player/coach on the oppossing team made a mountain out of a molehill? THAT'S CRAZY!
FWIW, I also enjoyed the delicious, delicious goodness of old man Dantonio getting Slapped around on his own field. I bet it's the Spear/stake. Cursed the field.

Sparty standing behind him is an accomplished ventriloquist.
November 9th, 2014 at 10:58 AM ^
I'm sure the players envisioned this prideful, arrogant coach guaranteeing a win, which in my book is much more insulting than one of the players doing it. If that was in part behind them not being able to stop the Buckeyes last night, I hope Coach Dantonio enjoyed the fall.

Did we indeed catch grumpy 'ol Mark taking a peek at the ta ta's?
Good thing she did not ask him if he forgave Mike Hart. "Um, er, sure, my heart's fine."
November 9th, 2014 at 8:32 AM ^
I think the notable thing here is that we have a good view of his jaw actually under strain here as he attempts a grimace. I wonder if there is some engineering value in getting him into a room and studying the mechanism which makes him constantly look like a grouch. Surely something there could be used for the betterment of man if not the man himself, right?

Which, may I remind you, already happened vs. Sparty.

Elliot can say what he wants....his team rolled into EL and put up 49 pts. We rolled in put up a big time 11 and had an epic OC fist pump late in the 4th for our first TD in 3 yrs.
God we suck.....
November 9th, 2014 at 8:39 AM ^
Or else you would be saying "We rolled in and put up a big time 11!! woo hoo!"
To be fair, our Defense is sort of non-sucky.

you must have missed their rose bowl victory last year.
November 9th, 2014 at 1:11 PM ^
Exactly. One Rose Bowl victory in 30 years and suddenly MSU wants to anoit itself as one of the elite programs in the country. Nevermind that Dantonio's streak of 11 and 12 win seasons over the past 5 years have come against some the weakest competition in the Big 10 in four decades. Of course, Spartan Nation doesn't want you to point out those facts, they push the narrative that recruiting is overrated and that Dantonio can make up for that gap by coaching up his players better than the Michigans and Ohios. They push the narrative that they are a serious playoff contender because they had the "guts" to play Oregon on the road and that the fact they lost to them by 3 scores shouldn't hurt them in the eyes of the selection committee because they kept it close for 2.5 quarters.
OSU blew a hole right through that delusion last night. Last season will go down as more of an exception than the bellweather of a new era of domination for Sparty. Dantonio's squad of seasoned veterans looked pretty overmatched against Meyer's young 5 stars. OSU looked faster, more athletic, and better prepared than MSU, which lends credence to the fact that the biggest discriminator between good programs and elite programs is talent. Star rankings matter.
Why is this important to us in Ann Arbor? Because the only other program that has been consistently recuiting at a level close to the Buckeyes has been Michigan, and while it's clear that bad coaching can keep superior talent from prevailing, the opposite is also certainly true. Here's to hoping we get a good coaching hire in December and we can join OSU in putting MSU back in the corner.

I like dill pickles. Now I can never eat them again without thinking of Rodney Dantonio

game in EL. This was not even the case last year.
Somebody studying sports management/merchandising should look into their Jersey sales.
November 9th, 2014 at 9:14 AM ^
but the difference is that the Buckeyes know how to handle winning. MSU fans have just been jackasses for years. Buckeyes fans will do some ribbing about how much we suck (and they don't) but it's tolerable. MSU fans have just become even more awful to be around because they love getting under their local Michigan fans skin
