If Michigan loses tomorrow, exhibit restraint, and think of the future, before you post.

Submitted by jg2112 on
The last two weekends have seen frankly ridiculous amounts of negative posting here on the site after admittedly disappointing losses. However, the future is incredibly bright with this team, no matter what ESPN thinks and how frustrated you, the viewer, may be. Keep this in mind: (1) The offense has at least 15 of its 2-deep returning next year, and will also be inserting Jeremy Gallon, Taylor Lewan, Q, Je'Ron Stokes, maybe Ricardo Miller, and Fitzgerald Toussaint into the rotations at their positions. Also, look at how Omameh and Roundtree have developed the past two weeks into viable options at their positions. There are more (Mealer, Khoury, Barnum, Kel. Grady) where they came from. (2) The defense returns at least 19 of its 22 on the two-deep, 20 if Donovan Warren stays. Yes, losing Brown and Graham will be a sad moment, but the improvement and continuity through weight training, repetition, and most importantly, keeping a DC in place, will likely offset any losses. Plus, players like Will Campbell, JT Turner, LaLota, Hawthorne, Jones, Emilien and a DB recruit or two (Cullen Christian? Courtney Avery? Carvin Johnson?) will add to depth and competition, improving the rest of the squad. And who here thinks Martin, RVB, Roh and Fitzgerald won't be solid to very good in 2010? (3) Tate and Denard will get another 10 months of development in the system. There is normally a big leap between the first and second years in any program as a QB, and both the QBs will be significantly better based on what they have gone through this year. Think of the improvement in QB play between 2008 and 2009, and expect a reasonable improvement for 2010. (4) Think of all the players that will be in their presumptive third years as college football starters (Martin, Mouton, Stonum, Shaw, Molk, Koger). Lots of experience by 2010, and how solid will the team be in 2011? Rebuilding a team is a marathon, not a sprint. Noone here wants to have to wait 3-4 years for the team to be great again. Frankly, you don't have a choice. However, when this team is 12-0 in 2011, you're going to look back at this process and find it laid the groundwork for Michigan's return to dominance. So, think before you fly off the deep end if Wisconsin wins tomorrow. If you want Michigan to descend into Notre Dame's 20 years of mediocrity, keep asking for Rich Rod to be fired after 2 years. If they lose tomorrow, yes it stinks, but just walk away from the keyboard if you're going to be incendiary and not realize how hard these kids are working to build a winning team at the school you support. Further, remember what Mr. Roh wrote earlier this week - what recruit wants to go to a school where every player and coach gets savaged and denigrated by its fans just for missing an assignment in a football game (if Mr. Roh said it, it probably means that it's become an issue for the players or recruits, so STOP IT)? Be positive. GO BLUE.

but there will be those that go straight to... "Dog and cats living together, real wrath of God type stuff." If things go poorly tomorrow, I assume Brian will lock down the site. Hopefully there will be no need for that. GO BLUE

Great post. Also, I would hope that the second that Wisky game is over, everyone is too busy thinking about the chances of an earth-shattering, paradigm-shifting upset of the evil scarlet and gray next week to contribute to the "UM schadenfreude" threads of other blogs and message boards. As everyone can tell, I'm already thinking about it.

I have stayed off the site the last few weekends because of this. I know that after a loss there isn't anything I can say or do to change it so why bother being pissed about it and clogging up cyberspace with a bunch of negative bullshit. Win or lose this has been an exciting (and at times terrifying) team to watch (reminds me of watching horror films as a kid with my eyes covered but peering through the cracks of my fingers). There are a lot of positives to take away from this year. To me, things can only get better from here on out. Go Blue, and keep it positive!

...by the time the game is over tomorrow this will have been pushed to page 7, over more "intuitive" posts like, - "Why is [insert defensive back] so [negative adjective]?" - "RichRod must [football strategy] or be [synonymn for fired]" - "Why did[any freshman QB] do [a bad play on Saturday]" - "Hire [Mid-Major head football coach]" - "Why is [walk-on] playing?" - "[topic that doesn't make any sense to a knowledgable Michigan fan]" - "[expletetive][interjection]" You should seriously re-post this say, 3:30 pm or so tomorrow

I look at this team and I see our holes and I look at the close games that we should have won and just have this gut feeling that in a year we are going to be significantly better. We will have more depth and we will be more experienced in key positions minus running back but, I believe Shaw and Smith can pick up that slack. Maybe I'm being a homer but those are just my feelings.

Well thought out. Well written. Couldn't agree more. The day is darkest right before dawn. I think we've seen the dark and some light spots are beginning to shine through.

I absolutely believe, as bad as the D looked against Purdue, that the team as a whole has quietly turned a corner under RR. We have the makings of a very good offense and are only a couple pieces away from being a really good team. I wouldn't be surprised if Michigan stole a win against Wiscy tomorrow and played OSU extremely tough next weekend.

Excellent post and perspective. My hope is high but my expectations for tomorrow are low. Now, if they have an all out collapse like at Illinois, I'd be particularly disappointed. But win or lose, I'm onboard.

This is probably the most disheartening thing about this season for me because I thought that U of M as a fanbase was tougher and more sensible. Calling for coaches to be fired after two seasons because you didn't win enough games, lost to a rival too often, or didn't make a certain quality of bowl game is the type of stuff I expect programs like ND, Alabama, OSU, and yes even MSU to do. I thought the Michigan fan was special, that we could show patience and resolve when things got tough. We gave Amaker 6 seasons to build a program. Red's first 5 or 6 seasons were brutally bad. How long was Bump Elliott allowed to hang around and be mediocre? Still we never seemed to succumb to panic and resort to rash decisions. I don't know when it happened, that our fanbase got so fickle, but we've become like every other program in CFB, and it's a little depressing.

in the desert of college football, 2009. There's some gnashing of teeth and rending of garments following bad losses, but there's more effort expended to understand why we're seeing what we're seeing on the field.
Seriously, if if one only has Detroit papers, ESPN and BTN for news and views, one wouldn't know what the hell was happening with the program. And that's where too many M fans are, stuck in in Freepin' ESPiN, BTN info hell.

I don't think that Michigan Fans are any more or less unrealistic than fans of other teams (college and Pro). I think this has more to do with the continuously move toward an instant gratification society. I mean everything is fast food, fast internet, Wikipedia, ADD, 4G cell-phones, microchip brain implants, etc, etc, etc! Why would we expect sports and sports fans to be different than the general society where they function daily? This was from Mike and Mike in the Morning – Look at the NBA and the number of coaches who were “Coach of the Year” one season and fired pretty quickly afterwards • Byron Scott – 2007-08 COTY, Fired in 2009 • Sam Mitchell – 2006-07 COTY, Fired in 2008 • Avery Johnson – 2005-06 COTY, Fired in 2008 • Rick Carlisle -2001-02 COTY, Fired in 2003 I am not a psych major, I only play one on TV!

if fans cant express their anger here it will only lead to drinking and violence. Besides, I can't believe Brian would lock down the site. Are we Michigan faithful really so easily wounded? Sure hope the team doesn't have this mindset or they'll get their asses handed to em. Speaking of which...Wisconsin always wins at home and wants revenge for last year's embarrassment. But our coach is radically superior. I'm expecting a win!

Well, I know a guy who knows a guy....... One thing I have heard repeatedly from a couple of pals o' mine who get to a practice now and then (one is a friend of Fred Jackson) is that Rodriguez is very big on this player development thing. Not just big as the evidence from his tenure at WVU indicates, but BIG on waiting until he feels a player is really ready to contribute--whether it's recovering from injury or a young lad waiting to grow up. Now he's had to rush guys in here, and the results reflect that--but the sentiment that my two pals (believe it or not, I have some friends. Sometimes they call me to see if I'm dead yet) share about Rodriguez and his desire to have guys in his system a couple years before they start in with significant playing time is at least encouraging. It also shows why we haven't seen too many of the younger guys yet. I know it baffled the poo out of Maizeman on Scout. He kept on saying he couldn't believe more younger guys weren't playing based on what he saw at practice. He was BIG on Roundtree from the get-go; has been talking up Omameh for two years, and he's also been big on Barnum, Lewan, and Warshington. Welp, I guess we gonna find out either in these next two games or next season!

Ideally Brian would move his recap to Sunday's instead of Monday, this board devolves into madness without intelligent talking points to guide it. Like certain neighborhoods after dark, mgoboard is SCARY place to visit on the weekends.

The last thing he said to me, "Doc," he said, "some time when the crew is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell them to get out there and give it all they got and win just one for the Zipper. I don't know where I'll be then, Doc," he said, "but I won't smell too good, that's for sure."

Should we turn on the runway lights? No, that's what they'll be expecting. I read Mr. Roh's letter. He made some good points. I see a lot of improvementon offense. A win would be great, meaning bowl bound, but a close game would be good. Win or lose, they're exciting to watch. I think I know why tKOB is not so ornery and insolent, he swore off that cheap Milwaukee beer in honor of this week's game and got his Goose Island Mild Winter brew on. That beer would make anyone feel better, more bang for your belch.
