Goodbye: Garrett Taylor Comment Count

Ace

things change

Four-star cornerback Garrett Taylor became the second 2014 recruit to decommit from Michigan during this football season, following the lead of now-NC State commit Darian Roseboro. Taylor announced his decision this afternoon on his Twitter account:

Taylor had previously revealed plans to officially visit Ohio State and Penn State later this season, so this comes as little surprise. The Wolverines now have nine commits remaining in the 2014 class, and further attrition is expected. With no cornerbacks left in the class, Steve Lorenz believes that Oak Park (MI) ATH John Kelly and Saline (MI) CB Tyrone Miller could see increased interest from Michigan as they try to fill that need.

In related news, four-star TE commit Chris Clark set official visits to UNC and Texas, per Lorenz; he looks like the next one to go. A full recruiting roundup will go up tomorrow; for sanity's sake, I'm writing about basketball today.

I think it would be a good idea for Michigan not to accept any commitments until a new coach is hired.  We don't want to settle for low hanging fruit when a much more capable fruit picker with a much longer reach is hired.

Considering the coaching the current staff is providing, he's made a smart decision for himself.  Hopefully, we'll hire a new coach that will be worthy of his re-committment.

This is why action has to be taken now.  David Brandon must be fired and a new, competent AD must be found.   The way it's going now, this class is going to end up with four or five quality players at the very most.

No competent coaches will be available until the end of the season, but there must be a new AD and that AD must implement a solid plan to find a coach as soon as the season ends.  They need to find a way to salvage this recruiting class.  The sooner a head coach is found, the sooner they will be able to mitigate the damage done by this year's colossal incompetence.

But firing Hoke could also have the opposite effect.  There are probably still commits being held onto by Hoke and the staff.  Getting rid of Hoke could cause those guys to run.  At this point, Brandon really needs to go, get a new AD, and have that AD get prepared to make fast decisive moves as soon as the regular season ends.

There's still plenty of time for things to play out.  By the time Michigan fires Brandon, they should already have a short list for replacements.  So if they do operation clean sweep and fire Brandon and Hoke Dec 1, that gives you about 2 weeks to name the placement, and gives the replacement 2-3 weeks to put together a list and get someone hired the first week of January.

Because keep in mind, hiring a sitting AD is going to be hard to do mid football season.  If you want someone like Jeff Long you're not going to get him until after he's done with the College Football Playoff on Dec 8th.  And if you want a Mullen or Harbaugh, they won't be available until January.  Possibly even mid January.  Penn State hired Bill O'Brien Jan 7th.

tl;dr -- Firing everyone after the season leaves plenty of time to hire a new AD and new coach by early Jan.

Thats not going to help you with all of the guys that planned on enrolling early. If there is no coach the first week of January, these guys wont enroll at Michigan and will be forced to enroll elsewhere. They have planned their high school classes so they can enroll in January so I dont see anyone changing their mind to see who the new coach will be.

It seems from his comment we have little to no chance of getting him back eventually.  Our only hope with the rest of this class is to get a top-flight coach soon after the season ends (not that likely) who can bring some of them back.

Taylor has to decide what is best for himself.  Looking at Michigan's football program Taylor sees a sinking ship who's captain is aware, but not fully aware, that he's standing hip deep in water.

At this point it's hard to believe that Hoke and Brandon feel the best thing for the program is for them to hang around.  The longer this goes on the more pissed I get.

I think Taylor's one that we can pull back in if we get the right replacement, I have no hope on Chris Clark though, I have a friend who's younger brother goes to his high school and said he wasn't exactly the firmest when he was committed anyway

but understandable! As a fan, this recruiting class is the least of my concern right now. The right hire with a month to recruit can fill this class. The silver lining to it being so small with our situation.

"I wanted to be a part of a program that knows what it takes to win and the players and coaches develop that culture. I felt like Michigan lost that while watching them play," Taylor said. "As well as the fact that I felt like Michigan wouldn't put me in the best position to get to the next level after college, especially with the problems they've had in developing their players."

Another nail in the coffin.

I can't blame any recruit for decommiting now.  You have to really want to go to U of M to stay on with this sinking ship.  One thing about this kid though, if I remember right, didn't hear tear his ACL.  I have to believe that he won't has as many offers with that situation.  Perhaps I am wrong.  Also, I don't thik it's a given that a speed change of direction player can always return to full strength after an injury like that.
