ESPN Report: Regents To Discuss Brandon Tomorrow, AD Candidates Contacted
Jeff Long and Warde Manuel: already contacted?
ESPN is reporting that the regents will discuss Dave Brandon at their previously scheduled meeting tomorrow, as revealed to them by regent Denise Ilitch herself. This may very well be the beginning of the end (or the beginning of the end of the end) for Brandon, as Ilitch had this to say about the Shane Morris situation:
"The systems failed and there are a lot of issues we have to review," Ilitch told WWJ CBS TV in Detroit.
The money quote, however, came at the end:
Sources told ESPN's Brett McMurphy that someone on Michigan's behalf has contacted three possible candidates to replace Brandon to gauge their interest in the job.
Arkansas AD Jeff Long, UConn AD Warde Manuel, and Boston College AD Brad Bates are the obvious candidates to be those three people, with Texas Tech deputy AD Joe Parker as a possible dark horse.

I can't imagine that other AD candidates were contacted if DB really has any chance of sticking around
October 15th, 2014 at 12:52 PM ^
And any new AD will surely consider that it's his mandate to clean house of all problems, which would first include the football program.
So we start from scratch again.

I'd like to think that through Hoke's recruiting there is a decent amount of players with untapped potential on the roster that a new coach could quickly mold into a pretty good team.
October 15th, 2014 at 1:04 PM ^
Yes, and administratively, there will be lots of new jobs opening up in the AD.
October 15th, 2014 at 1:37 PM ^
some of the people who were let go by Brandon will be contacted.
October 15th, 2014 at 1:41 PM ^
Wellllll... there may also be some jobs that are simply eliminated, too. We'll see.
October 15th, 2014 at 1:47 PM ^
but something similar to this:
October 15th, 2014 at 1:55 PM ^
"You made some very big decisions today."
October 15th, 2014 at 3:55 PM ^
Talent on this team. Could be a quick turnaround. I think a good coach knows this and sees a once in a lifetime type opportunity.
October 15th, 2014 at 1:00 PM ^
I sincerely doubt that a new AD would be particularly eager to let Beilein go...
October 15th, 2014 at 1:09 PM ^
no, no, no, no. Of course not. That would be ridiculous.
October 15th, 2014 at 1:57 PM ^
John Beilein is one of the only coaches that actually should have the ability to fire a university President. (/Gee'd)
October 15th, 2014 at 1:08 PM ^
But what of the other non Will Surely candidates?
October 15th, 2014 at 1:02 PM ^
That's gotta be simply to make sure they have a replacement before they axe him.

To clarify, as I posted in the other thread, Ilitch made these comments on a CBS 62 political talk show the other day, sort of a local Meet the Press-type deal, alongside L. Brooks Patterson and Robert Ficano. She didn't actually speak to ESPN, and the comments weren't made today. It starts at 2:40 here:

October 15th, 2014 at 12:38 PM ^
Does this somehow change the veracity or import of her comments? I'm thinking it does not.
October 15th, 2014 at 12:49 PM ^
because she said them on a TV show where she's much more likely to be guarded about what she says.
October 15th, 2014 at 12:51 PM ^
It changes the context.
Regent talking to ESPN? Huge deal.
Regent appearing on a local TV show mainly talking about local politics where she gives a brief and fairly boilerplate, though "something is going to happen wink-wink"-type answer to a weird question about Dave Brandon? Still a huge deal, but not quite the smoking gun, regent-talking-to-ESPN-type story we'd all love to see.
In short, not a huge surprise the regents will discuss this tomorrow. But if not in concert with the "candidates have been contacted" report, this is probably an interesting, but not terribly telling development.
October 15th, 2014 at 1:05 PM ^
Thanks for that context, it helps keep it in proper perspective. I still think DB is 100% gone, we'll just have to see whether that happens during the season (I think so) or after.
October 15th, 2014 at 1:14 PM ^
you're just trying to not jinx it.

"ESPN is reporting that the regents will discuss Dave Brandon at their previously scheduled meeting tomorrow, as revealed to them by regent Denise Ilitch herself."
it makes it sounds like she talked directly to ESPN, which she apparently didn't. the only way she revealed this info to them is if they watched the video of her.
October 15th, 2014 at 12:52 PM ^
It doesn't change the information, but it does change that Illitich "revealed this to ESPN." Outside of the McMurphy thing, there's no reporting here. Just repeating what was said elsewhere.
October 15th, 2014 at 2:36 PM ^
I don't want to rain on the parade, because Mr. Brandon should be let go (or at least "asked" to resign), but I'm not sure Denise Ilitch actually says anything about DB really. She seems to be alluding more to the issue with Shane Morris and the concussion protocol, IMO.
I'd like to hear what others have to say after viewing the clip. I think it is shows something different than what is being assumed.
October 15th, 2014 at 3:03 PM ^
She is very careful NOT to say anything about Brandon directly, only that she and the other regents have receieved a great deal of input and expect a lot of public comment at the meeting and that the regents have a number of issues to discuss. The reference to the system failure is specific to what allowed Shane to get back on the field.
October 15th, 2014 at 4:13 PM ^
is "reporting" it so late after it happened. On it's own, it's not really anything. But combined with these 'sources' that have claimed they are actively looking at other ADs, this suddenly becomes something.
Which makes me hopeful that the sources are legit.
